a surprise upset for bernie sanders. millions across the country cast their ballot on super tuesday. we're breaking down the big winners and losers. welcome back, i'm christine romans. >> i'm john bermen. 31 minutes past the hour. breaking overnight, wow, this was simply stunning. bernie sanders with an upset victory in michigan. such an unexpected result there. the sanders campaign didn't expect it. the clinton campaign didn't expect it. the polls did show it was going to happen. hillary clinton did win in mississippi by a huge margin. what does that mean? that hillary clinton won more delegates on this super tuesday. you're looking at the total delegates that includes sup superdelega superdelegates. on the republican side, donald trump had three strong wins, michigan, mississippi, high he. ted cruz won in idaho. an awful night for marco rubio. he didn't win any of the states. he picked up no delegates for sure in michigan, mississippi or idaho still waiting on hawaii. it's maximum one or two delegates. an awful night.

madison is going to be key for bernie sanders. green bay. this is where bernie sanders was today. he knows his key here, run it up in the college towns, run it up in the rural areas. try to offset -- i think 80% of this vote will be white in wisconsin. it's a good battleground for both partieparties. >> there's a report in the "washington post" today that just broke where bernie sanders is now going to talk about contesting new york, hillary clinton's home state of new york, talking about wall street, talking about fracking. trying to score a huge victory in a state that she should be taking for granted as her own. >> it's on april 19th. we've heard john king say tonight she needs to deliver in wisconsin on april 5th. guess who is in agreement actually with some people who said bernie has a shot yes, ma'am -- the clinton campaign. wisconsin probably favors bernie sanders. they're setting up this expectation so they don't end up with a michigan upset like we saw, that she could lose there. >> in wisconsin? >> in wisconsin. now, if she does lose there, it is possible that she could

we just heard from bernie sanders. whatever the final number is, this is still considered a big win for him tonight. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. i mean, the sanders campaign feels like this gives them a lot of momentum going into these series of contests coming up here in a week, wolf. he's really looking toward ohio, even before seeing his showing tonight, his campaign felt that his message attacking hillary clinton for her past support of some -- even before seeing how it played here in michigan. that's certainly we should watch going into the next week here. i want to talk about some of the polling. the sanders campaign on friday did their final internal polling. they found that hillary clinton was up by what i was told by one aide was high single digits. that was on friday. they didn't bother polling over the weekend because they found it really difficult to get ahold of young people, which are so key to his sort of black -- his numbers did not reflect his support of minority voters. >> ohio, one of the big co

so when bernie sanders is expressing and touting the enthusiasm he sees in his crowds, when bernie sanders says he does a better job defeating -- not just donald trump but frankly, any of the republican potential nominees, than hillary clinton, our poll matches that. those are his strong suits right now. a lot of that looking inside the numbers is coming from the help of independent voters. you were talking about what are the makeup of voters. bernie sanders does really well with independent voters. across all th states that have voted so far that we have exit polls for, he beats her among independents like 61% to 38%. in this poll here, currently in the national poll, among democrats looking at how independent voters sided, he beats her by 4 points among independents. that has been part of his success. two of the contests today are open contests, independents can vote. one of them, alaska, is a closed contest. >> hillary clinton's camp used to say i think early on in the primary season, say look at these you enthusiasm numbers, okay but dismiss them. say a lot of people don't know who ber

so today bernie sanders right now we've allocated 26 delegates to bernie sanders, zero to hillary clinton. now, she is above threshold. she has more than 15% in the vote totals in both washington and alaska so she will likely get delegates but right now we're able to allocate 26 delegates to bernie sanders today. that brings us to the total delegates to date and this is where you see hillary clinton's big lead 1,711 delegates to bernie sanders' 978 delegates. that includes the superdelegates. if you break it out and you look at just pledge delegates, you see that it is 1,229 pledge delegates for hillary clinton, 482 superdelegates to bernie sanders' 951 pledge delegates and he has 27 superdelegates. rack them all together 1,711 to 978 is the total delegates to date. >> we said at the beginning of the day he needed some landslide victories because of the proportional allocation in these democratic contests. he did. certainly in alaska and possibly in washington state as well. >> yeah. these margins hold whenever vote the counted, he'll make a significant chunk up in his delegate deficit. t

bernie sanders. this is a place where his message plays very well. keep in mind this is the home of the minimum wage debate, this is the home of marijuana legalization, so this is a place where his message plays very well. now, here at the caucus, really a three sort of phased caucus. you come in, there's an initial vote. then folks have three minutes to talk where they try to sway the undecided votes into their camp or to try to switch people from hillary clinton to bernie sanders and vice versa. and then there's that final vote. and those are the results that we're waiting for now. i have to tell you a pretty informed group of people, it takes some courage certainly to stand up in front of your friends and neighbors and that's exactly what you do here at the caucus. you're talking to people in your neighborhood trying to persuade them one candidate or the other. so we saw a lot of informed debate happening in the caucus. ari. >> and briefly, cal, one of the things we saw last night was 15,000 peopl

i want to go to jeff who is covering bernie sanders' campaign. he's joining us right now from san diego with the campaign manager. tell us the latest. >> reporter: hi. i'm joined by jeff weaver. thanks for joining us. so a tough night in arizona tonight. senator sanders spent a lot of time there. what went wrong. >> i know cnn is projecting that 71% of the vote is in, but i think that's an under estimation of the number of people who were voting there. we've seen lines in arizona five hours long. that would be the people that voted, i think that's just wrong. so i think this race is going to close up substantially between now and the morning. >> are you predicting victory? >> no. we have to wait and see until the votes are counted. there's obviously something wrong with the numbers and i think once we see where they come down there may be a split of delegates in arizona. i do think in other places we're hearing good news. >> as this race goes forward john king has done a projection and he says even if you win 55% to 45% in every race going forwar

bernie sanders will get five or six. she will add to her 200 delegate margin by about 20 by the time all of the votes are counted tonight. hillary clinton will gain in terms of her path to the nomination even though michigan is a huge setback because the sanders campaign is arguing for democrats to win in november they have to get those votes in the states of michigan. until she can do that there's not the same sense of inevitability about her nomination. this has been a big night on the republic side for donald trump. he has won 14 states in the nomination contest and number 13 tonight is michigan. donald trump won 36 to 24. this was a double digit margin. much wider than people had participated. it underscores the donald trump that agrees with bernie sanders in terms of being ingredients free trade and naft and transpacific partnership. that economic message is playing well in placements like michigan and you're seeing democratic cross-over voters who like what he is saying and they registered in the primary tonight. d

all of a sudden he turned himself into something of a victim with bernie sanders and bernie sanders' supporters on the other side and most importantly he's given his followers which are millions and millions of people, something like 35% of the vote cast, where he's given them something to say, kind of comeback about all this violence that has happened at these rallies and some of the rhetoric so they can now blame it on bernie sanders, this communist, so i think this works for donald trump. we'll have to see on tuesday what happens. >> bernie sanders, bernie's supporters get the credit for this, right and hillary clinton on the other side of it, i just wonder if you think mayor as a clinton supporter, this is in a way showing that perhaps donald trump sees bernie sanders as a more formidable threat in say a general? >> no, think it shows donald trump being the usual irresponsible donald trump, who is not taking any responsibility for virtually anything that happens in a campaign, and he could have obviously blamed senator sanders and next week he could be blaming secretary clinton.

also among independents breaking for bernie sanders, young people breaking for bernie sanders. how does hillary clinton appeal to that without changing who she is as a candidate? >> i think you've hit on it is that hillary clinton can't change who she is because she's such a known entity. she was a free trader and she pushed the trade deals. voters who are very into the trade issue don't buy that and because of hillary clinton's problems with trust worthiness they doubt her position on trade. she's really stuck on that one. for donald trump it's a different situation because he's for free trade and pro-fair trade so it's like he prefers chocolate and van ilnilla. so donald trump has got the free traders and fair traders and not explaining how he plans to do that at all. >> policy and donald trump, maybe it will come up in thursday night's debate. >> coming up, hillary clinton went big against bernie sanders on the auto bailout. did that backfire on her in michigan. we have more next. at mfs investment management, we believe in the power of active management. by debating our res

bernie sanders pay be five or six. that spread of 25 is important because look at what is happening to hillary clinton in michigan. bernie sanders has a 3 point edge that would suggest he will probably win maybe around 70 of the delegates if this holds up. this will be a humiliation of hillary clinton given the importance that she had placed on michigan over the last couple of days. bernie sanders' message about inincome equality, unfair trade, that is resonating with the people there. if you look at the overall candidates, in overall delegates, she is head of bernie sanders by about 200 in the overall delegate count, 699 to 478. this margin is larger than it was for obama and hillary clinton in the 2008 race. clinton people say there's no way bernie sanders can overcome this, with results like tonight, but the bernie sanders campaign saying she is a regional candidate, she can only win in the south and bernie sanders is proving that he is winning in a state that democrats have to have in november if they're going to d

she has 204,000 votes to bernie sanders 125,000 votes. she has 60.5% to bernie sanders 36.9%. an impressive win for hillary clinton over bernie sanders. let's go over to john king and see what's going on as we await the other contests in utah and idaho. >> as impressive lead for donald trump. 61% of the expected vote in statewide. it's worth noting he doesn't show up on our board because he dropped out of the race, but marco rubio is getting about 17% of the vote. marco rubio because of the early voting running ahead of john kasich. you have a lot of people out there saying if you them up -- >> they voted for him before he dropped out. >> right. it's not the way it works. if you didn't have early voting would those votes have gone to cruz today, that's the conversation on social media, but you play by the rules and there was early voting and this is what we have tonight. an impressive donald trump victory. 58 delegates. there's 40 more in utah. look at the numbers. you pop up the largest county in the state. the sheriff was for donald trump. the former governor for donald trum

people believe that bernie sanders says what he means. so, revealing a bit of herself that way is important. it is a way to sort of say, this is who i am. this is what i am. to explain the failings of her campaign at times. why she can never really run away with things. why she is always in a dog fight. i thought it was a striking moment. it was probably the most memorable moment of last night. >> what about wall street speeches? she was a new york senator. wall street was right in her backyard. she did go to wall street in the days before the financial crash and said subprime mortgages. cut it out as she has put it. bernie sanders has tried to paint her as too cozy to wall street. he is the guy to fix the system that's rigged against the little guy. he continued to hammer on that last night, eric. >> he did. you know, part of why this is so effective for him is bernie sanders' position is not complicated. hillary clinton's is. she does leave room for compromise. he doesn't. this is something that has been a problem for her for months. th

bernie sanders had more than 30%. m.j., you've been doing some reporting on the clinton campaign, sort of the autopsy. michigan has only been over for a few hours, but they're trying to figure out what they did wrong. >> i think the bottom line is, campaigning hard matters. even in a state where the clinton campaign thought that they would do well, we saw signs that they were not campaigning as aggressive as they had in nevada or south carolina, for example. those count when people go to the polling stations. clinton only campaigned in places like detroit and flint, and neglected the other parts of the state. that's something the clinton campaign thinks could have hurt her. the clinton campaign now believes that perhaps the former secretary of state started focus on the general election a little too much. she didn't remain focused on many of the democratic nominations. and you could tell in her tone she was aiming her rhetoric at donald trump. often not naming him but it's clear who she was talking about, and letting

that's what bernie sanders says, too. what donald trump has supported for 20 years is socialized medicine, the federal cougovernt in charge of everyone's health care. it means if you're a senior, the government decide whether you get a hip replacement. >> he said he wants private health insurance, should, allowed without state boundary, go all around the country and let the insurance companies compete. he says he doesn't want socialized medicine. >> you're a good enough journalist you no he's said dozen and dozens of times on television he want the government to pay for everyone. in the last debate he ran away from that position and supported buying insurance across state lines, which i've been advocating for a long time. in his position for 20 years, he says, he is, quote, a liberal on health insurance, everyone should get health insurance, it should, mandatory and the government should pay for it. if the government pays for everyone's insurance, the government controls everyone's health care. that has been his position.

this could get bigger for bernie sanders. but right now from the city of detroit, can hillary clinton expand that margin that she's getting in wayne county and as she expands it -- it's still not updated. as she expands that are there enough areas left in the rest of the state for bernie sanders to offset it. we have a real barn burner here in michigan. >> because this is an all hands situation, i'm going to ask chuck todd to come here and join us at the desk. we're here with lawrence and eugene. what do you make of this? >> this would be a big deal for bernie sanders if he can win. >> it's a big deal if he loses and it's a big deal if he wins. >> with these numbers, i went to the university of michigan and i kind of know the state, it's really hard to tell who is going to win this because -- she's going to get those votes. i think there's more to come in kent and that's going to be mostly bernie sanders. it's going to be very -- my old friend dan rather would say it's tight as a tick. >> this is happening in the real america

bernie sanders won there 86% to 14. oklahoma, another decisive win for bernie sanders. 51 to 41. the majority of the 38 will go to bernie sanders. keep in mind, watch the margins that hillary clinton was able to pull down in the south. the biggest prize of the night, 67 to 30; in other words, 222 delegates and hillary clinton will get most of them but two out of every three. a much bigger spread than bernie sanders was hoping for. georgia, another win for hillary clinton there, 71 to 28. exit polls found that hillary clinton took four out of every five african-american voters. that explains the huge spread in georgia. alabama a, 78 to 18. it underscores that bernie sanders is not able to break through. that is why the delegate count in alabama will be a large spread. tennessee hillary clinton walking away with 66 to 32. keep in mind these 30 point margins mean a significant amount of delegates. virginia, this was a race that bernie sanders thought he might be able to stay close, but hillary clinton is walking away with the majority of delegates in the state of virginia. that is 2

bernie sanders was awarded the state of michigan. it took a long time after the polls closed for good reason and a very high percentage before that call came

but bernie sanders won a few states too. he picked up colorado, minnesota, and oklahoma, three states he had really targeted and he also won his home state of vermonting of course, in a blowout. now, when you combine those wins with the $42 million that bernie sanders hauled in in february alone, you can see why he's not planning to drop out any time soon either, especially with more democratic debates coming up, more opportunities to chip into hillary clinton's lead or change the story. >> there's a lot ahead here for all of these candidates. edward brad never, you have a fantastic piece. anybody who wants more on that. thanks, eric. it was a big night for the front-runners. donald trump, hillary clinton, not enough to drop the others off the board. josh rogin, byers, maeve. they say, look, this guy has a following and he's going to move forward and get the nomination, but when you talk about electability -- first talk about how solid his lead was and then talk about the solidness of the exit polls. >> it was really interes

clearly swaying very much for bernie sanders. i want to get you a look inside of the last of the four. there are four tables left here. so four precincts left who are still trying to divvy out who is going to be the folks that they were choose to go to the next round of voting, and you're seeing the papers right there. those are the ballots. the things forkesforkes -- folk to decide who is going to be their candidate. we have 13 of the 17 districts or precincts in at 28% for clinton. 72% for bernie sanders and now they're going to decide who their delegates are. once they're finished with counting, the final count for them and they will figure out who the delegates are that are going to the convention. >> all right. that's just one small snapshot, but if bernie sanders continues with a 70-30 margin of victory, the kind of margin he needs in order to overtake, or at least catch up, with secretary of state hillary clinton. let's go to jason carroll now at a caucus site outside tacoma in sill com, washington. what's going on where y

ohio was a tough loss for bernie sanders. they spent a lot of money. >> they did actually across the five states they outspend her 12 million to 7 million. they put $4 million down last friday for the final three days of the campaign across the states. this is a bitter result for bernie sanders. he didn't expect to come away empty handed tonight. >> for those clinton supporters who wish bernie sanders would drop out, there is an argument to be made that it makes her a better candidate the longer he stays in, it also continues there being a battle on the democrat side. >> the idea that a contested primary is damaging for the general election is not historically borne out. when you get to this point in a primary the grooves are cut pretty deep and bernie sanders has faced the same issues he has faced all during the race. he isn't just college whites and young people, but he's losing two-thirds or more of african-americans in the midwest and 80% in the south and tonight she crushed him everywhere. it is hard to win your party's
