this originated in alexandria in northern egypt. it's a place you've been many times, and i know we keep asking this question of how could someone get through with any explosives, if that is what happened here. but detail for us the security stance and posture at that airport. >> reporter: so when you go to the airport, right when you go into the building, you have, you go through a metal detector. you also have your luggage scanned. once you go through there, you go through another checkpoint that also scans luggage and checks people. then you get to the check-in counter. so you have layers of security even before you check in. and after that, once you give the check-in counter your bag, that bag goes through another level of security. and then the passenger goes through the final layer of security, which they scan the luggage. again, they pat down the passenger. and so if this explosive device, if it is in fact an explosive device was able to get through these layers of security, the question is going to be how competent are these

egypt is not the united states. egypt actually hired a company called controlled risk after the metro bombing to reevaluate their security. but you are absolutely right. in other parts of the word such as egypt, this is the big concern. the concern primarily, you know, egypt is doing a fairly good job of passenger security screening. but there's also a bit concerned over employee security. maria: the state department is looking into whether americans were on board the flight. we do know that state department is looking into this. but the president has said this is not terrorism related. what do you make of this? >> you made this point earlier. the inconsistency of information coming out of cyprus is baffling. we don't even know whether he had explosives. we were clearly told the wrong name, the wrong identification of the suspect. we initially heard he has to go to turkey, are we now know ex-wife is in cyprus and that's clearly the intended destination he had in mind. my concern is how much more we still don't know.

the release of everyone on board egypt air flight 181. jerrold tann, al jazeera. >>> security analysts say although the hijacking resolution was a good outcome, there's many questions to be answered. >> this in many ways is the textbook outcome. we have an aircraft that is undamaged. we have people that are unharmed both passengers and the crew and even the hostage-taker has given himself up peacefully. this is the ultimate outcome that any hijacking situation aims to achieve. all of this appears to have happened as a result of very effective coordination between the egyptian and cypress government as far as we can tell. and evidence suggests to me that even when the aircraft was in the air on its way to cypress, the negotiations probably had begun, certainly it seems that the hijacker was identified. his friends and family were identified, and a lot of things were put in place so when the aircraft landed, the process could continue. so not unsurprisingly only a matter of hours after the aircraft landed did we get the news that the -- mos

onboard the egypt air flight at the time of the hijacking. i asked her what the most scary moment was. >> it was the moment when i knew it was hi jacked and we were above the sea. i felt like he will either bomb the plane, or he will just demand that we land in the sea, or just keep on flying until there's no fuel. so i just had several scenarios on my mind, trying to figure out what could happen and i was trying to make peace with it. i was horrified. and we took off normally, like normal, nothing was weird. maybe after a while everyone noticed that we should have landed and we haven't landed yet, and then i was looking out the window, and i saw the sea. so it was weird to see the sea. and then we noticed there was something wrong, but nobody imagined that it could be that kind of thing. so then a crew passed by and collects all the passports without saying any reason. and that they cannot say anything more, they just immediate passports, i think about now 45 minutes later one of the cabin crew members just told us that we had been hijacked.
