at michigan, look at michigan. they don't win tonight, what's their message? >> reporter: hey, chuck. yeah, it's really tough for them if they don't have an abnormally or an unexpectedly strong showing in michigan tonight, in many ways. i will say, both the clinton campaign and the sanders' campaign, and i was talking to debby d ybie dingell, the congresswoman from the detroit area, who's a longtime watcher of michigan politics, they all say that the numbers are going to be closer than what many of these polls, including ours, have been showing, this double-digit gap between sanders and clinton. and the sanders' campaign is really counting on it. they know that if they don't do well in michigan, it's going to be really hard for them to argue going into march 15th that they're going to be able to win in places like ohio and illinois, and some of the other states that would actually give him a shot at being seen as a real contender, instead of just kind of a cause or the leader of a movement. the they're going to pro

michigan, all of the polls in michigan are about to close. there were some polls that were still open, but the voting has been coming in. significant numbers have already been reported. we can share with you what's going on in michigan right now on both the democratic and republican side. here's a cnn key race alert right now. we can't make a projection in michigan right now on either the republican or the democratic side, but we can tell you that on the republican side, 21% of the vote in michigan is in, and donald trump maintains his lead. he's at 38% to john kasich's 26.4%. ted cruz, 22.1%. marco rubio distant fourth with only 9%. once again, 21% of the vote is in in michigan. trump has the lead of 36,954. just changed. that lead with 21% of the vote in in michigan. i want to go to -- i want to -- first of all, make, go to michigan, stay in michigan on the democratic side 30r. 30% of the vote is

it includes flint, michigan. and in 2008, gave hillary clinton 57% of the vote which mirrored close to the 55% she got statewide. the results were very similar. both candidates put a lot of time and effort into flint, michigan. look, the thing bernie sanders has to do tonight, mississippi, is start to erode hillary clinton support among nonwhite democrats. if there is a place can he do it, it should appear somewhere in the place like genesee county. >> i want to ask you, ed, it seems to me, obviously but it seems to me the person who has the most riding on michigan tonight is john kasich. >> no question about that. >> he has basically gone dark since new hampshire he said i'm going to forget about super tuesday and going5% up to the upper midwest, ohio, michigan, make my stand. if he doesn't win michigan it's right across the border from ohio. >> if he doesn't win michigan and comes in third or fourth or third or second even, he is going to have a, hard time next week. this is going to give him momentum if trump

certainly was the case in michigan and let me, on behalf of bernie, thank the people of michigan for standing up to the pundits, the establishment, the super pacs, wall street, all the corporate interests who have been trying to stop a bernie sanders' campaign. >> why do you believe he won in michigan tonight? >> i think there were a few reasons, wolf. i think this issue with trade, senator sanders has opposed these disastrous trade deals that have been devastating michigan, ohio and other states for so many years. he's been a consistent supporter of them. people across michigan know that there state has been devastated by the de-industrialization and it's a policy that hillary clinton supported. that message in michigan resonated across racial lines. as you know, michigan once had a vibrant black middle class, the pride of the nation. it's really been devastated. people we met in michigan, african-americans talked about the prosperity that used to be there in the african-american community, which has been lost. you see it's not just in personal finances but places like flint, michig

in michigan say they're angry. a majority, 55%, say they're dissatisfied. and then, of course, the critical white evangelical vote. in mississippi it's pretty significant. 76% of michigan republican primary voters today are evangelical christians. that should be good news for both trump and cruz that have been doing well with them. and in michigan -- that's in mississip mississippi. in michigan, take a look at this, dana, 49%, nearly half the republican primary electorate in michigan is white evangelical or born again. that is ten points higher in turnout among evangelicals than we saw four years ago in the republican primary in michigan. it is now a more evangelical electorate, i am sure if you're in cruz campaign headquarters you take that and you're like, wow, that might help us tonight in michigan. >> absolutely because you sort of think about southern states like mississippi that has three-quarters of the republican electorate say they're evangelical. that might be expected, but michigan maybe not so much and,

michigan is a fluid state. any one of them can come out on top in michigan march 8th. >> do you have a growing sense there's pressure already on tenure rubio and kasich to oh drop out of the race and solidify the three of them verses a donald trump. what do you make of those suggestions or conversations? >> i think it's premature to ask eater to get out before they go to their home states and see how they do in their contests. i would like to see how they play out march 16th that discussion can happen then. >> you have a big prize this week. what are the top issues that you think voters will be focused on for the big vote? >> economy is always a big issue. we have a lot of citizens concerned about stagnant wages. they want to see a president who is going to invest in economic opportunity for them. national security is a huge issue for michiganders. that was not discussed unfortunately. voters are concerned about isis and the safety of their children and our country. >> all right. so what do you think at this po

too close to call in michigan. sanders over clinton. 92% of the known, raw vote in, 26,000 separating them. steve kornacki is crunching the other known numbers. >> let's take a look here, what is still left to come. you look at these numbers, where are the votes still outstanding? basically, we said half the vote is in these three counties, macomb county, home of the reagan democrats, white working class. it's basically all in right now. oakland county, suburban, higher-income, college-educated, that is basically all in right now. so, this is the main outstanding one, wayne county. we've been talking about it all night. that's a hillary clinton county. the question is how much? also, genesee. that's where flint is, still about half out right there. and from bernie sanders' standpoint, where grand rapids is, there's still a lot of vote to come there. sanders is doing very well there. and we can just show you very quickly, where does the counting stand right now in wayne county? a 34,000-vote lead for hillary clinton

if he stays under 15%, he will emerge from michigan with zero delegates from michigan. there's a 15% it threshold you need in michigan. i want to go to briana keilar. we're told, briana, that bernie sanders is going to make a speech shortly. is that right? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. he's actually at his hotel here in miami and he is about to have an unexpected press availability and talk to reporters. i'm at his completely empty former campaign rally site. this is not exactly how the sanders campaign thought tonight was going to play out. this is so much closer than they thought. i guess you could say they're pleasantly surprised, that's an understatement. but they think this is a very, very big deal. i spoke with jeff weaver, bernie sanders' campaign manager and he said "we can't complain right now." he thinks that it's the auto bailout messaging that hillary clinton pursued that really back fired on her. he thought that it played in to some voter suspicions that hillary clinton wasn't playing it straight with them because he felt that voters really didn't doubt

the winner in michigan, a very impressive win for bernie sanders in michigan. we there's a contest in idaho, 44% of the vote is now in. it's a republican primary. in democratic contest in idaho on this night. ted cruz has a solid lead, 41.6% to donald trump's 28.9%. ted cruz has a lead of about 9,300 votes. in michigan we projected that donald trump is the winner. we did that a while ago. 36 point %, but look at this fight for second place. 24 point % for ted cruz. marco rubio is down at 9.3%. he doesn't get that 15% threshold he wind up with zero delegates from the state of michigan. those are the numbers we have so far. let's talk with dana and mark. very exciting night so far and we're not done yet. >> that's right. we have idaho and hawaii. but mark you have been doing some really interesting reporting on the stop trump movement and where they're headed now. >> right. so there's been a lot of talk about how are they going to stop donald trump from getting the republican presidential nomination. there's been a lot of theories floated over the past week. in t

let's go over to john king, take a closer look at michigan right now. 91%, the vote is now in michigan. bernie sanders with 50.3%, hillary clinton 47.7%. he's still got an impressive lead right now. let's take a look at the largest county, wayne county in michigan. is that vote in or are we still waiting? >> more is in. butch that's why jeff zeleny said at the clinton headquarters, they're preparing for a narrow loss. as vote's gone up, she's racked up her margin there. the question is is the turnout as high as they wanted? i suspect not if you had access to their targets. that number they would like to be above 60%. they would like that to be a little higher. bernie sanders made some inroads among urban african-americans. you're waiting for 75%. there's still a big chunk of volts to come in here. where else can hillary clinton get some more votes because bernie sanders has a pretty big, healthy lead. mccomb county, there's not a lot of votes there. oakland county where she is winning 100% in. you come up here, this is very interesting here. i'm told that among the areas out in flint,

chris matthews is in michigan. the reaction to what appears to be a significant win for hillary clinton in mississippi. >> i'm looking at what you're looking at is this interesting situation where you have a large black population. i think it's being called the black belt. it's because of the cotton culture. huge numbers of people who identify with the democratic party. the republican party is white dominated down there. you have these parallel movements. hillary is doing well. donald trump is doing well. right along the gulf of mexico of from louisiana, we'll see if it gets to florida and the panhandle. you have a vulnerable group, african-americans who always feel vulnerable politically in the country being a minority. they're looking to hillary clinton because they have known the clinton family and trusted. they feel confident. they need somebody they trust deeply and for a long period of time. bernie sanders had a hard time breaking in there. on the trump side, i wonder whether he would have the same appeal to

it seems to be a big upset in michigan. >> reporter: that's right. bernie sanders is going to win the michigan democratic primary. here is why. if you look at the latest race board you will see that bernie sanders is up by about 34,000 votes, 74% reporting. the biggest counties where the most votes is the county, the university of michigan. bernie sanders is winning that counting by about 57 to 42. the on other county that is still largely is wane county, detrait. hillary clinton is winning that 47 to 52. a majority of the delegates 130 will go to bernie sanders but the split will be even. the closeness of this race is going to mean that mississippi, the results there matter even more because look at this. hillary clinton won 83 to 16. it means that she will work away from mississippi with about 39 or 30 of the elected delegates. bernie sanders will get five or six. she will add to her 200 delegate margin by about 20 by the time all of the votes are counted tonight. hillary clinton will gain in terms of her path to the nomination even though michigan
