missouri could go either way. also on the democratic side 94% of the vote is in, bernie sanders maintains his lead. look how close it is. he has a lead of 4,749 votes. it could go either way. in illinois hillary clinton has a bigger lead. 96% of the vote is in. she's winning 50.6%, bernie sanders 48.6%. hillary clinton has an advantage of 36,206 votes. that's significant, but we cannot make a projection in illinois. let's go to john king. he's watching them a lot more closely county by county, especially the votes that have not yet been counted. >> you only see counties that have reported less than 95% of the vote. this is the democratic side in missouri. you can see the big counties that are missing votes, jackson county, kansas city and the suburbs around it, hillary clinton has a lead. 89% of the vote is. there's reason to believe that hillary clinton could make up some votes there in western missouri. then you come to the eastern part of the state and you see st. louis, hillary clinton again with an 11 point l

we're watching missouri on the republican side. similarly on the democratic side look at close it is between hillary clinton and bernie sanders. she has 49.6%. he has 49.4%. she is ahead by 1,131 votes. 99% of the expected vote is in. very close. the republican field got smaller tonight. donald trump won florida and pushed marco rubio out of the race. donald trump desperately wanted ohio, but john kasich fended off the front-runner. hillary clinton has to be smiling. ohio and illinois did not follow michigan's lead. bernie sanders was hoping for wins in those states. he did not get them and that means his path to the nomination now becomes even slimmer. for the republicans we have no indications tonight that the never trump movement is staying hold. the establishment lost the obvious choice, marco rubio. will enough republicans get behind ted cruz or john kasich to block trump. kasich, cruz and trump all making their cases tonight. >> while it is not god's plan that i be president in 2016 or maybe ever and today while my campaign i

missouri, illinois, missouri on both sides. >> i was looking at the counties in the republican race. let's start there. this is a great tug of war between donald trump and ted cruz. trump with the lead at the moment. jackson county, the western part of the state just switched, it's essentially a tie. it's significant because ted cruz is doing something tonight in missouri he has not had success doing in other states, which is contesting and in some cases at least running even in the suburbs. outside of caps city, ted cruz tied right now. it you come over to st. louis, this is where donald trump has to win to win this state and look at how close it is right now in is st. louis county, the immediate suburbs outside of the city. donald trump up a little bit. st. charles county, a swing county for republican, a very important county in statewide elections in november. donald trump with a very narrow lead. so this is where we're going to watch, in the st. louis area, still a lot of votes out. donald trump leading at the moment but the margins are pretty close. in ted cruz can keep the mar

missouri still unresolved. but there's other news we're about to break here tonight, which is going to become a large part of the discussion tomorrow. and it's on the republican side. as we've been talking about whether or not the republicans are going to have a nominee before their convention or worked out at the convention. one of the really interesting doomsday republican scenarios is that it goes to a contested convention and the party looks for somebody who has not previously been running for president as their savior. somebody to go to for the nomination, even if they haven't run in the primaries and caucuses. the first person who people name, when you talk about that sort of a scenario, sometimes it's mitt romney, but if not mitt romney, it's paul ryan, third in line to the presidency right now. john harwood is cnbc's chief washington correspondent. he had a very, very, very interesting conversation with paul ryan about that prospect tonight. watch. >> people talk about the prospect of the convention tha

those two democratic races in missouri and illinois and that one republican race in missouri. chuck todd, looking at those margins, to us those look like small margins in states with big votes. those look close. what are you going be watching for. >> in missouri those are close margins period. for illinois, 51,000, that's a lot. that's a lot for bernie sanders to make up considering what is out and what isn't out on that front. not to say that he can't make that up, but on the democratic side it doesn't matter. we know how the delegates are going to break. they're essentially going to split even which is why at this point it's -- it is a moral victory if it's for bernie sanders. >> the win is bragging rights. >> it's not that big. >> on the republican side, those numbers come in later as we if fill it, how donald trump or cruz wins this, you get more delegates in a winner take all situation in a congressional district. it's possible you could win the statewide total and the second place person if it's this close depending on how their share of congressional districts went you
