treated, which purports to show the actual moment of salah abdeslam's arrest. not a great deal to see in that one but lots of dramatic images being shown on the internet because it is a residential area of brussels. the sight of all these armed police is a strange one. however much we might've gotten more used to seeing guns on the streets of europe in the wake of the attacks in november, there is still something very dramatic about the shots. the huffington post also reports that salah abdeslam didn't resist arrest, and a belgian newspaper says that only 10 shots were fired during this operation, which is interesting to note and certainly very different to what we saw happen just north of paris here when supposedly the man who orchestrated the attacks in november, when he was caught and there were explosions and many, many rounds of gunfire. tom: ok, and the belgian authorities will be obviously quite pleased that this arrest has been made. possibly even triumphant. but there has been, has in there, quite a lot of criticism leveled at the belgian authorities e

a family in that district where salah abdeslam was apprehended. the family, according to belgian media, include a number of family members who actually went to fight in syria. so this gives you an indication of the close link people, families, young men from these districts in paris and in brussels, nor whatever reason, attracted by the ideology of i.s.i.l., in the case of some who go there to fight and in the cases of others that don't go there to fight but bring the fight to their home cubs. this is a phenomenon that police are worried about and it is very difficult to control. there have been criticisms of the police. people asking questions, why did the take the belgian police four months to find salah abdeslam, he was under their nose, he was hiding only half a kilometer away from his family home. the response by security experts to that is this, the threat, is so widespread you would almost need several police officers follow each potential suspect and there could be thousands, in order to unveil the problem and that is not possible. police

this is where salah abdeslam was captured on friday. nevertheless, four days after that, isis which has now claimed responsibility. we have to confirm it, but they carried out the attack that killed 28 people. how does this speak to their capabiliti capabilities? >> they have networks throughout europe that i think are far more extensive than european officials can fathom or can at least account for. i was speaking to an isis defector when i interviewed and profiled in october for the daily beast. i spoke to him today. he told me that the numbers of operatives that have been sent to europe are greater than he himself had known. he said that germany is a perspective target of isis. i've talked to u.s. intelligence officials who say spain and italy, they're hearing a lot of chatter about wanting to go there. that is for symbolic reasons. baghdadi in 2014 said if god wills it, we'll conquer your rome. it's a factor there with respect to spain. this is really the second plank of their strategy, and we're remiss to say this came out of nowhe
