vernon. it's my pleasure to welcome you all here for this intallment of the ghei hart gains lecture. we are honored to have flora fraser with us to discuss her book, "the washingtons: george and martha, joined by friendship, crowned by love," the father and mother of our country and of the struggle for independence that he led. already the book has been hailed as a major work on american history, an important contribution to understanding the joys, complexities and intricacies of the union of our greatest founding father to the nation's very first first lady. 2015 actually marks, believe it or not, the enth year of -- tenth year of the lecture series. [applause] yes, how about that? [applause] established in 2006, the series honors ga item j with heart -- gayheart gains. gay and her husband and family are here with us this evening. many of you know her well, but i'd like to ask you to stand and be recognized. [applause] they told me when i took the job that when you became emerita, you might

expanding the mount vernon estate and particularly improving the mount vernon estate was among the first orders of business. mount vernon would eventually -- the estate would eventually expand to some 8,000 acres by the time of washington res death and that's mount vernon alone in addition to martha's many thousands of acres. but there's a much bigger expansion, not just in termses of size but in terms of the type of estate. mount vernon is when washington takes management of it focused on, as it has been, for ages, for generations, on the cultivation of tobacco, and i like to imagine riding through mount vernon in, say, 1761. you would have heard the bird kerning, heard the -- kerning, heard the occasionol work of a spade in the field, heard the enslaved men and women, perhaps singing, talking to each other. the free workers talking to each other, the clop of horses' hoofs, the work of the occasion al plow, peaceful surrounding. this would contrast profoundly with your experience of riding through mount vernon, say in 1768 when you would have found a bustling hive of production and indu

then run in mount vernon. but there's just a couple of principles that i would point out as commander-in-chief. washington saw big picture. he saw that this is going to be a difficult war and a war that we have a good chance of losing. it's going to strain every nerve, every resource to win. is it worth winning at all costs? is it worth winning a few burn down your country in the process , if you destroy your infrastructure, if your economy is growing, if towns, ports, villages are destroyed, families destroyed and you end up throwing out the british and standing on a heap of ashes and facing a future of impoverishment and suffering. washington answer is a pretty resounding no to that. he views that as a primary obligation of himself as commander-in-chief to ensure that we emerge from the score within it that possible infrastructure and economy. another guiding principle of washington is that as commander-in-chief the army must not operate in isolation from the people, but the army must be integrated into the

henry ford ford was an early donor to mount vernon. he gave mount vernon their first fire engine. ever since we have gotten fire engines from ford motor company and they have sponsored a number of excit of exciting things including this book talk. i would also like to welcome the c-span audience who is filming tonight and we always appreciate when they come out and help the publicize these events. they're popular in their popular on c-span as well. we have a very special guest tonight. an old friend to mount vernon in the story of george washington. we have ed l'engle who is the editor-in-chief. this is one of the most extraordinary projects of the 20th and 24th century to copy entrance drive all of the documents from george washington it's an extraordinary collective work that's been going on since 1968. the mount vernon ladies association have been partial funders since that project since the beginning. the recent past we have renewed our partnership and i would like to thank our partnership with the paper as well as other family papers. two fully encompass the scope of what the

man andon is a polite feels obligated to feed and house everyone who comes to mount vernon. often there are 10 to 20 people sitting at the table. a lot of them complete strangers. the saddest line in his voluminous papers, he writes in his diary, i dined alone with mrs. washington today for the first time since i returned home from the war. he had been home from the war for 1.5 years and it was the first time he had dinner alone. even in the privacy of mount vernon he becomes not only a prisoner of his celebrity but like a piece of public property in a way that he cannot escape it does not know what to do with and he is constantly complaining in his letters that all of these guests showing up our drinking his wine and eating his food and it becomes a tremendous strain on his finances and he made the person advices and get a special appropriation and he said i do not need that but it becomes a major drain on his finances. >> jefferson was in many ways the most complicated because he had tremendous admiration for jefferson's political and literary talents and of course what ha
