garner case and far too many examples across america. i've been working for years to address problems in our criminal justice system. in the days following the death of freddie gray i called on the justice department to open criminal and civil investigations into freddie gray's death. on april 21, 2015, i was joined by representative john conyers in reintroducing the end racial profiling legislation i originally introduced before the death of trayvon martin. as baltimore emerged from the unrest i met with community hrerdz to discuss -- leaders to discuss legislative responses to help heal baltimore's physical wounds and how to address many of the core problems that underpin the unrest. i met with a pharmacy owner whose store had been looted. i spoke with residents in east and west baltimore. i visited freddie gray's elementary school to hear from teachers and community leaders about what tools they require for the federal government to better meet the needs of students. in the weeks following the unrest, i went back and forth from baltim

garner in a chokehold, but this is the first major conference to consider the role that surveillance plays in creating those tragic circumstances. one in 1 million, that's how i think of the peril and the promise of this moment. we have, for a few more minutes one african-american president and for the first syllable future, 1 million black people in prison. that's around the largest percentage of incarcerated african-americans in our future. why are there more african-americans under criminal justice supervision in 2016 then there were slaves in 1850. what has been is a new form of social control that was enabled by a racial gaze. the war on drugs is one example. if you walk out the door of the law school and jump on the red line and go to the national institute of health, they will tell you, african-americans don't use drugs more than any other group. they don't sell them more than any other group either. people who buy drugs report buying them for someone of your own race. if you go to a different government agency like the united states department of justice, you can actually wal

i was covering in the wake of what happened with eric garner a number of young people were walking around manhattan, across the bridge into brooklyn, and i'm hearing the same words chanted from "f the police song" from back in the day, but to see young people, so many youngs later, invoking your same words, what was that like? >> the bad part of it is the fact that they have to go through the same things that we were going through and that, you know, little has changed or not enough has changed. you know, what's good is the fact that people, you know, did what we did, you know, they used their voice as their way to protest, as their so-called weapon, and not sticks, rocks, bottles. you know, when you start going there, it's a whole nother level. i just think it's a thing that people can say and protest without being physically violent. >> what do you think has really changed since -- between your generation and, say, your son's generation? >> well, police are a little more scrutinized. you know, when i -- before we did the music, before we did that song, you know, police could do no wrong

. >> people like michael brown, sandra bland and my father eric garner. >> they are not just hashtags and trending topics. >> i mean, obviously, a number of prominents, yourself included folks are supporting him, but what is the problem here. why can't he quite get the black vote? 75% to 25% in clinton's favor in new york. >> look, this is her home state. she's run for senate twice. she has a lot of relationships and the reality is -- >> but it's not just new york. >> no, that's right. that's right, but it did trend down a bit from the midwest. we were hoping that it would go up some, but, i think what's real is that the clintons have not been able to take the black vote for granted. we have contested it and pushed up to 35% in some places. you saw in that video activists like harry belafonte, he and i and lifelong activists are used to stepping out on faith and bringing people with us and having to, you know, even fight within our community to get folks to try something new, to try a new way. what's clear though when you look at the exit polls is that people still continue to trust b
