ted cruz and john kasich now appearing to downplay the deal that they struck, the one that has kasich pulling resources from indiana in exchange for cruz giving up at least officially on oregon and new mexico further down the calendar. the entire interview with kasich from the "today" show earlier this morning where he was pressed on exactly what this deal does and doesn't mean. we're going to have that for you coming up. the whole situation setting up what cruz has called for for weeks now. he will get the one-on-one race he has been looking for between him, ted cruz, and donald trump in indiana. that may be the last best shot for cruz to keep trump from that magic 1237 delegate number. our latest nbc news survey monkey weekly national tracking poll now has donald trump reaching his highest mark yet in any national survey. look at that, he has now hit 50% of republicans across the country saying trump should be their party's nominee. cruz pulling in just over half of that. kasich still below 20%. hallie jackson is in indianapolis this morning. she has been on the ted cruz beat. halli

so kasich -- i should say so trump wants kasich out. got it. that makes sense. this does not make sense. cruz said he wants kasich out too. why would he want that? his only path to getting the nomination is down the road where trump cannot win on the first ballot because remember, he's corralled all these delegates to vote for him on the second ballot if there is one. but you don't get to the second ballot if trump wins the first one. cruz needs kasich, the not trump candidate, in the race to have even a chance. yet cruz says he wants kasich to drop out? you're buying that? really? isn't it more likely they've cut some sort of side deal, cruz telling kasich you stay in, that way i'll have a chance and we can stop trump. that makes sense. maybe vice president kasich. i don't know. but cruz wanting kasich out does not fly. and then there's trump. remember he said he had great words, the best words. he's using new words now. lots of things have changed. just changed. i'll list a few. in an interview with "usa today" trump talked about his own possible vice presiden

kasich downplaying it. it is very odd because in one sense, they have to work together and let people know they are working together. on the other sense, they have to be telling people directly, look, you still have to vote for me. it's very strange. certainly not the strangest thing in the cycle. >> john kasich downplaying the alliance and ted cruz boasting about the indiana plan. and giving it a different spin. i don't know how much of an alliance it is after what you hear ted cruz saying. listen. >> the fact that john kasich pulled out of indiana gives us a straight forward head-to-head contest between me and donald trump. >> kasich pulled out of indiana. i thought they were helping each other. >> i know, right? such talk from friends. frenemies. >> this guy goes to show the stagecraft you have to pull in something like this. dana bash had some great reporting on this a few months ago about the talks going on behind the scenes that were leading up to this. you know at the time, everyone was denying it. y

john kasich would not say that. instead john kasich said to the voters in indiana, they ought to vote for me. remember, john kasich, his name will still be on the ballot there, so he could still be a factor in this race without campaigning there, without spending money there. this does not automatically mean that it's a one-on-one ted cruz/donald trump race in indiana. again, john kasich speaking just now at that diner in philadelphia. okay, a look at where the candidates are today. you see kasich there in philly. events being held from bernie sanders in hartford to donald trump in warwick, rhode island. kasich is going to head down the road to rockville, maryland. cruz is skipping tomorrow's primary states altogether. he is going to be in indiana today. we touched on two of those big states tomorrow in our last hour, pennsylvania and maryland. this hour we want to hit the other three so we've invited back some of our favorite on the ground reporters. matthew albright in delaware, chris keating in connecticut, ian d

kasich could become the king maker in all of this. kasich has 100 something delegates. many of thm he has hand-picked. these are people that the kasich campaign has that are loyal to them and likewise he is loyal to these guys. in the event that trump is shy of the delegate count or cruz is trying to build up delegates, he takes on a very important role because he has a lot of delegates that are very loyal to him and if he encourages delegates to go a certain way, maybe to trump -- >> we've been talking a lot about likability, right, with the two candidates. ted cruz and donald trump. their likability factor is not high. what about kasich? republicans don't like him? >> no. republicans do like him. but when they look at these polls about the electorate that he's the only one who can beat hillary, first of all, that's not true. i noticed the kasich supporters like to lump trump and cruz together. that's also not true since mr. trump's neg among women particularly have been skyrocketing in the last three weeks. >> but the polls show kasich is the only one who beats hillar

sean: this is the strategy born strategy from john kasich -- basically what kasich and john -- john kasich and ted cruz have decided is to not run against each other in states where the other has a better chance of beating trump in a one-on-one race. is nowana, ted cruz effectively in a one-on one race with kasich after trump said i am not going to go hard on the state. cededhange, ted cruz has these states to kasich, clearing him for a one-on-one raise with donald trump there. this is all with the goal of trying to keep trump under that magic number of 1237 delegates. know asinly we will early as next week whether this strategy is affect the. but is it too little too late for the ted cruz and john kasich campaigns? sean: that is what i'm hearing from a lot of people. i spoke to a woman who wondered aloud whether it was too little too know, you can look at this many different ways and it was a crowded field for a long time. it would have been harder to do in february.e this as the field starts to thin, ,aving an arrangement like this it might have slowed down trump in some of these places.

john kasich shouldn't be in this race. now kasich goes into new york. he beats ted cruz in those states and now cruz it seems like is stepping back and saying, all right. forget the one on one. it's two on one. does this look a little desperate? >> i think we've said this for a long time. every campaign has to run its own strategy. it's really not our job at the rnc to handicap it as much to ensure that we have a fair and transparent process. as we head to cleveland there's two options left. if donald trump gets to 1,237 bound delegates, he becomes the presumptive nominee. if he falls short of that bound delegate number, we'll has to a contested convention and it looks like that's what the strategy is of the remaining two candidates. that's up for them to decide what alliances are good or what strategy they want to employ heading up to cleveland. >> you guys are caught in the middle on this. at the same time, so much of the debate and rhetoric coming from donald trump has been about the process. has been about what he says has been a rigged process. som

john kasich is way behind. he's only won one state and if he cares so deeply about donald trump getting the nomination, why doesn't he just drop out? >> well, clearly by running for president this life-long public servant has made clear to the public that he thinks there's something greater for him out there, and if it's not president, maybe it's chair of the rnc, maybe it's a vice presidential slot, maybe a cabinet position. all of those things are open and available to him, and it doesn't make sense if you're going to try to bargain for any of those things, including, you know, there's still a long shot chance he could become the republican nominee. he's got a case to make and he wants to make it. so all of those things are reasons why it would be very early for kasich to sort of throw in his cards. he's got a lot of cards to play, and we can look forward to him playing them in his home state. >> here is the thing though, john, if i'm a voter, right, and i really don't like ted cruz but i really like john kas

>> i work for john kasich and i represent what governor kasich is going to do. i think a lot of the delegates in cleveland will have really deep problems. because not only is donald trump going to lose in november, he's really not a true republican in terms of the principles that our party fought for over the years. >> katrina, he does have high negatives. the man you want to be the president of the united states. they clearly are worried that if he's a republican nominee, hillary clinton is the democratic nominee, she'll beat him. >> look, this is the same establishment through their magic crystal ball told us that john mccain could win and then mitt romney could win and they were wrong. mr. trump is going to be able to bring those negatives down just like he did at the beginning of the republican primary, close the gap in three months. but if either of these campaigns truly believes that donald trump wouldn't get the nomination or get the delegates before the convention, they wouldn't be joining forces right now. this is just spin. it's a hail mary to stop mr.

an unusual move between cruz and kasich. the question is whether the strategy is a turning point or create more of a fragmentation in the republican party. joining me now, sean spicer, communication director for the rnc. sean, this deal, donald trump calls it collusion, saying it is illegal in any other business besides politics s he right? >> no, candidates are free to pursue whatever strategy is in their best interest. they can go to places they want, spend time and resource, hire who they want, each has to be satisfied with the strategy they choose when it is all said and done. >> this is totally acceptable by rnc standards, this deal? >> it is not a question of acceptable or unacceptable, that's not our job. our job is to make sure we have a fair, transparent process to compete for the nomination. not to decide what's a smart tactic or wise use of resources. is it permitted? absolutely. >> have you seen anything like it? >> not that i can recall, this has been the most interesting cycle in anyone's history, in modern pol

mark: cruz people believe they can get some kasich people. john: saying -- you would be a crazy candidate to tell your voters to vote for someone else. if you believed ted cruz and john kasich are colluding, that fits neatly into the story that donald trump has been pushing more broadly about the republican contest, that it is a crooked deal that is rotten to the core. this weekend, ted cruz outhustled donald trump for delegates again at the state convention in maine. the trump campaign announced the front runner will campaign in indiana tomorrow with a legendary basketball coach, bobby knight. how do you think the cruise-kasich deal will affect the way donald trump campaigns for the next six weeks? mark: he needs to win indiana and he needs to think about taking on ted cruz there. he will need to figure out how to engage in a one-on-one contest without getting drawn in. the other thing he needs to think about is after tomorrow night, does he need to shake things up? donald trump does not change very much. is he on a path to do that? john: it

kasich, way behind. still less than marco rubio, by the way, who is not on here because he suspended his campaign, although he, too, trying to get his delegates. i spoke to kasich aides about this move that we're reporting here on msnbc. they say look, we'll be on the ballot. cruz is worried about a kasich scenario at the convention, and charlie black, an experienced operative tells me the idea of limiting the ballot is a strategy to discredit kasich's campaign. the fact is every convention sets its own rules. i it can tell you that is certay true, so anything can happen. the argument i have unearthed from two campaigns that usually disagree on everything, cruz and trump, is they have an overlapping interest in getting the convention, which will have a lot of their delegates, to make it a two-man race. is there a legitimate or democracy argument here? sure, you have had a big race. all 50 states have voted. down to the top two, something of a photo finish. let it be the race between the top two. in polit

because he needs kasich. ted cruz just by nature of the demographics, that does not match up well with new york, pennsylvania, rhode island, connecticut, maryland. >> he needs kasich to whittle away. >> if you're going to stop trump, kasich needs to start perform iing. he won ohio and he did not get delegates in wisconsin. because then maryland, pennsylvania, they are unbound. the pennsylvania numbers are about influencing the unbound delegates of the convention. kasich is the wild card to whether you can keep trump well short of 1237. if you want to keep him 100 short, kasich needs to perform in the northeast and midatlantic states where ted cruz isn't going to do that well. he can get a couple districts in maryla maryland, it's donald trump country. kasich has not performed at all. >> can he raise money? how can he continue to raise money to stay in? >> but u indiana is the race where kasich may have a spoiler role if you're looking to deny trump 1237. >> kasich you might v as well have him in these states.

statewide, trump beat kasich by 35 points and kasich by 45 points. here's an important reality check. just about 870,000 republicans voted yesterday. it's a paltry sum for a state as big as new york. how many other states had larger turnouts. wisconsin, a significantly smaller state than new york, totalled more than 1.1 million. ohio, also much smaller than new york's population. they turned out more than 2 million republicans. still, a win is a win and delegates are delegates. thanks to new york, trump has to win 57% of remaining delegates. it's doable, if he runs the table next tuesday in the five states we told you about. cruz is now all about mathematically eliminated. we're at 98% territory here, if we wins that much, he could get the nomination on the first ballot. so basically you're saying there's a chance. but still it brings us to the new drama that is unfolding on the right today. for the cruz campaign, a contested convention is now pretty much their only hope. it's an ironic twist for a campaign that just a few months ago, cruz was insist
