katy zachry is live in fair mound. walk us through what happened here. >> you both used the word strange and bizarre. those are two words police are using with us. that's not out of the question. let me break it down for you. what's going on behind me, this is the second scene related to this police crash. police are towing from this scene, 15th and parish, three cars involved. there are so many moving parts. here's what police know. take a look at this video from around 2:00 a.m. this morning along broad street near brown. this pickup truck was driven by two plain clothes police officers, they were hit by a black sedan. that sedan kept going after the crash. the driver did not stop or get out. the officers were both injured. one blacked out for a few seconds from the crash impact. they are recovering at hahnemann hospital. here's where it gets strange. police say a white suv pulled up to that police crash scene. the driver got out andç left h car in drive so it kept moving forward. two men were in the area, happened

katy zachry is live in north philadelphia. katy, what's happening now in the case? >> reporter: police tell me once they get their search warrant signed and they expect to have that done right around now, they can get in the suspect's car which they found overnight and get in his house and look for evidence. now, the person they're looking for is accused of hitting and dragging a man on a moitor scooter last night. it happened on lehigh and aramingo avenues around 9:00. police say the person in the gold-colored suv did not stop and dragged the victim on that motor scooter 200 yards to his death. a few hours later they found it. they have a message about the one thing they could have done differently. >>> even if there's injuries or even in case of faye talts. if the vehicles are registered legal legally if they' remain on the scene and cooperate with the investigation there may be no charges. >> he was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. police tell me they have solid witness testimony helping them. reporting live outside the 24th police distric

katy zachry is at the hospital in university city where the officer is being treated. we begin with matt delucia following theç investigation. matt? >> on the way over here we stopped by the scene at 59th and market. a lone police car remained there. earlier it was very different, gunfire and a foot chase that led to one officer being shot and two suspects in custody. take a look at this video, this is from the scene, just before 9:00. two officers were flagged down by a woman who said two men were breaking in her car. the officers approached the men, they tried to run and then officer james mccollough tackled one of of the suspects. he was shot in the leg. both suspects were caught a short time later and here's the mayor and police commissioner talking about what happened. >> dangerous city and a lot of guns out there. have to get the guns off the street and make sure that our officers are safe, our citizens are safe. he's in good shape. hopefully he'll be okay. >> this was an instance when someone flagged them down. this is what they do. it's a dangerous job but th

zachry is live with what we're now learning about the katy? >> well, first a bit about his condition, rosemary. according to mayor jim kenney of philadelphia when he first was able to talk to the injured officer here in the lobby, he said he had a good handshake and was able to make good conversation with him before he was taken up to his room at penn presbyterian hospital. he arrived here at the hospital in university city with a gunshot wound to his left thigh. he applied his own tourniquet at the scene to stop excessive bleeding. where officer james mccollough was shot is a few blocks away from where philadelphia police officer jesse hartnett was shot in january. he walked up to officer hartnett's patrol car and fired. while police say the situations are different, officer hartnett was targeted. officer mccollough was not. top brass still drawing similarities to their bravery. >> back in january, three days into the administration, officer hartnett was shot. he's struggling but going back very well. and this officer is going to do the same

nbc 10's katy zachry is live outside the abram cancer center in center city. tell us more about this, katy. >> this newly announced $250 million grant means that top cancer researchers like those here at penn will begin working with drugmakers like never before to try and eradicate cancer. penn's progress with cancer research was highlighted earlier this year with a visit from vice president joe biden in january. he met with researchers as part of a national initiative to cure cancer. well, now this new project is being funded by the parker institute for cancer immune know thera therapy and involves half a dozen research centers throughout the country, bringing together scientists and drugmakers to share their findings. this kind of collaboration between cancer researchers and drugmakers, it sounds like an obvious partnership but it really hasn't been done like this before. i'll explain why coming up in the next 45 minutes. reporting live in university city, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. >>> happening today, the teenager who made national headlines after the afflu

nbc 10's katy zachry shows us how her memory is helping to save lives. >>> kristen's crusade was started back in 2006 to honor the memory of my daughter. >> reporter: ten years have passed since 21-year-old kristen mitchell was senselessly killed at the hands of her exboyfriend. her father, bill, spent the last decade traveling to college campuses to spread the word about dating violence. >> maybe they'll hear some of the things that have taken place and think about their own relationships with somebody who they care about but maybe they're in a tough relationship and don't even realize it. >> reporter: mitchell said kristen tried to break up the relationship when she was stabbed to death. she just graduated from philadelphia's st. joseph's university and had a promising life ahead for sophomore madison shields, the story hits home. she's witnessed unhealthy relationships and won't hesitate to get a friend or classmate help. >> i'd be there in a second. i would help them out. there's so many resources on campus. >> reporter: university leaders say since kristen's death, they've done more

nbc 10's katy zachry is live for us at philadelphia police headquarters this morning. katy, what do we know about the suspect? >> detectives, vai, tell us that the suspect who is in custody behind me at police headquarters, detectives say he is speaking with them and they expect to charge him later this morning with attempted murder of a police officer. we've also learned that the suspect, 23-year-old scottç griffin has a long criminal history. now, griffin has 14 prior arrests, according to court records, for things like drugs, weapons and theft. this is philadelphia police arresting him yesterday afternoon after an hour's long manhunt in the shooting of officer james mccollough sunday night. officer mccollough interrupted a carjacking with griffin and another suspect. griffin had been in jail less than a week ago. he was let go off a judge cited lack of evidence because several witnesses did not show up to testify. and that allowed griffin back on the street to carry out this weekend's carjacking, police say where he shot officer mccollough in the leg. >> he's exha

nbc 10's katy zachry is live for us at one of those crash scenes in fairmount. katy, police station tell us they're still looking for those responsible? >> they are still looking for those responsible, vai. there are so many moving parts to this story. it almost doesn't seem real. police here who i just got an update from assure us this is all very real. this white suv that we are focusing in on right now, this is integral to the whole story that happened around 2:00 thish morning. let's start with the video we have from broad and brown street in north philadelphia. this pickup truck was driven by two philadelphia police officers, undercover officers. they were driving back to central detectives within they were hit along broad street by a black sedan. that black sedan kept driving. and that sedan has not been found yet. a witness to that crash stopped, got out of the car. here's where it gets really strange, police say. this witness was not a good samaritan. he simply told police he was nervous, he was scared by the crash scene that he was driving upon, so he

nbc 10's katy zachry is live at the wells fargo center with a closer look at ed snider's generosity. tell us more, katy. >> reporter: that's right. i first want to show you, outside the wells fargo center where the flyers play, the flyers flag is at half-staff in honor of their team's founder, ed snider. he passed away yesterday morning after a two-year fight with bladder cancer. he was 83 years ole. he was born in washington, d.c. but moved here to philadelphia in 1964. by the age of 33 he mortgaged his home to form the flyers, the team, and bring them here to philadelphia. his vision for sports in the city did not stop there. in the early 1990s he worked with the city and business community to build what is known today as the wells fargo center. ed snider was also a philanthropist, creating the flyers charities. that group's signature event is the flyers wives carnival. it's raised $28 million since 1977. he also created the ed snider youth hockey foundation, an organization that helps kids who ordinarily would not have the opportunity to play hockey. we spoke with one long-time pa

nbc 10's katy zachry is live in university city following his condition. what can you tell us? >> reporter: rosemary, the last update we got from police is that officer james mccollough is here at the hospital in stable condition. he is expected to be okay, to make a full recovery. philadelphia mayor jim kenney and police commissioner richard ross as well as other top brass spoke to us outside the hospital not long after seeing officer james mccollough here at penn presbyterian hospital. he has one gunshot wound to the left thigh. they are expecting him to be okay. the 24-year-old has been?xp philadelphia police officer for the last two years, assigned to west philadelphia. his mom and fiance met him here at the hospital last night. the outcome for officer mccollough might be very different this morning if he hadn't had the wherewithal to apply first aid to himself. >> it's important to point out that he applied a tourniquet himself because he was bleeding profusely. and his partner went to his aid and brought him to the hospital. >> reporter: commissioner richard ross went on

nbc 10's katy zachry is live for us at one of the crash scenes this morning in philadelphia's fairmount neighborhood. a lot happened after the officers were hit. just walk us through it. >> well, vai, what's taking place behind me is the second part of a pretty involved crime scene that took place earlier this morning. we're focusing in on this white suv. keep your eye on this car. this is key to the larger story. let's start from the beginning. we have video of the police involved crash that took place along broad street right near brown. so two plain clothes philadelphia police officers were in this pickup truck driving on broad street at brown when a black sedan hit them. that black sedan kept driving. so a witness to the crash stopped his car, got out. i'm just learning from police he didn't put it in park. he just got out of his moving car because he seemed to be frightened by the whole crash that had taken place in front of him. so he started running and his car kept moving forward. two men who were walking on the sidewalk near all of this commotion, apparently, jumped into that m
