chris papst has a warning everyone needs to hear about. chris: this is a big market. how much of us haven't received a gift card or bought one? in 2015 it accounted for $1930 billion in the economy. for years scammers have been trying to steal part of that. but now, they are targeting a specific type of gift card. itunes. this comes from the inspector general from the treasury department. someone calls pretending to be the i.r.s. employee. they then tell you, you owe the federal government money from your taxes and demand you pay with your itunes gift card. this isn't necessarily new. it has existed in different forms but of the itunes it is moving in the music world. the federal government would like to remind you it will never ask you to pay your taxes from a gift card and, of course, other payments like western union, money gram or bank wire transfers will also never be requested. if you receive a call, it's recommended that you hang up immediately and report the fraud going to treasury.gov. chris papst. alison: thank you. another alert to be aware of. the federal

in northeast, chris papst, abc7 news. alison: thank you. covering metro and the countdown to the start of the metro safetrack program that begins on friday. do the passengers know what it means for them? brianne carter has more from the east falls church station with more tonight. brianne: metro trying to make it clear for riders. first thing we notice today is the safetrack pamphlet to riders. in the last ten minutes, this sign went up to warn the riders of the major in a matter of days. if that is not enough, new sign for the station manager and for riders as well. days away from major delay and possible commuting chaos. the general manager says the region is ready. in an ongoing effort to get the word out about safetrack this afternoon, paul wiedefeld met with the local county administrators and the city managers to address any of their concerns. >> we are nation making sure that we are coordinating with them. making sure that the public is aware of it. what are we doing at that end. >> what about the riders? at orange and the silver lin

chris papst is live with the latest on the investigation. chris? chris: well, the two crashes this morning shut down this section of eastbound randolph road for eight hours today. they just opened at 3:10 or 3:15 this afternoon. people that saw the crashes say they were significant. police don't know too much at this point whether they are connected. they are investigating. here is what we do know. one person dead, two in custody and two more on the loose. this happened at 7:00 this morning. when a 2009 toyota camry ran off the road, ran into a tree and then flipped upside down into a instantly died. then about a mile away just one minute later, a 2005 s.u.v. crashed into a pole. there were four people inside the vehicle. three ran away. one was captured. one of the four stayed at the vehicle and was taken into custody. the other two are on the loose. police did find drugs inside the second vehicle. the drug charges may be coming. this investigation is far from over. >> the investigators are looking at that possibility, that the first crash involvi

chris papst is commute is shaping up tonight. chris? chris: well, for the past hour and a half we have been driving around hear on 66 going east and west. it has been looking good. probably less traffic than what you would expect on a monday. so let's take a look at it now. we are four or five miles west of 495 on 66 heading west. we are in the vienna area. this is what it looks like in front of us and behind us and what you expect it to look like at 5:0 a 5 on monday -- 5:05 on monday afternoon. we reached out to metro who said the overall ridership is down 1% from two mondays ago. but for the stations west of ballston which is where the track started for the safetrack program, they are down 26%. so you can expect that these are the people that would take metro, one of the 26% that did not take it today. overall, the traffic does look good. for monday afternoon. back to you. the long-term closures won't just have an impact on commuters. businesses are also gearing up as people have fewer places to park and less time to get home. stephe
