i think douglas macarthur fit that role very, very well. another theme in my book is as you mentioned about the myths and everything, i really try to get to the core of the truth about his relationship with u.s. navy. again, thomas hart who was commanding the fleet in the philippines in the early years is one of the persons who doesn't back to call him douglas. at one point mcarthur bristled a little bit because admiral hard to not have that many ships under his command in the asiatic fleet. mcarthur bristled a little bit and said well tommy, get yourself a real real fleet and then you will belong. the truth of the matter is that admiral hartz, at at that point was wearing four stars and macarthur was only wearing two stars. he was a couple of stars short and there's a little there in terms of ego at play. in terms of recent books and literature, or sometimes the emphasis on contention and how contentious things are. you begin to wonder a little bit how do these people really cooperate and actually be able to win a conflict and win a war. i
