heavy rain bands moving onshore in florida. but the center of this storm, the eye of the hurricane is still about 120 miles offshore. tallahassee right in the path. rain heading in that direction. there you see the eye of the hurricane. that's pretty well defined. and we have one buoy that just so happens to sit closest to the eye of the storm. wave heights there 20 feet, winds gusting near 60 miles an hour. so again, it's a weak category 1 hurricane, but as far as the storm is concerned, it's very strong. more heavy rain heading towards the florida panhandle toward tallahassee. heavy bands moving through gainesville. in the tampa bay area, look at these heavy rain bands approaching. chances are you've seen a lot of flooding. if you look at the buoys near the tampa bay area, wind gusts 60 miles an hour, and wave heights over ten feet. the storm expected to impact our area over the labor day holiday weekend. chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz standing by with a closer look at the newest track just released. >> yeah,

marks, florida. polo, what do you see? >> reporter: john, it is important to point out what you can expect after the storm rolls through. this is amazing we witnessed a few moments ago a large tree blocking the roadway. we saw a small army of workers from the nearby city of tallahassee clear it out in a matter of minutes. that is important as these are the first vehicles that are now making their way out of the city of st. marks. that is the region that was perhaps hit the hardest here. it was closest to where the eye of the storm made landfall only a few hours ago. what is important to see here are people actually making their way out of the region. what is a relatively small city of a few hundred. several people decided to simply hunker down while the storm swept through. now that the main roadway in and out of the region is clear, we are seeing people finally leave the area and most importantly this is going to allow resources and first responders make their way into the region to get a better picture of how wide spread

this is happening right now in florida. a tropical storm is headed right for florida, and it is growing stronger hour by hour. rain and lightning have already hit parts of tampa all the way north to tallahassee. forecasters say it could even become a become a hurricane before landfall tonight or early tomorrow morning. the governor of florida already declared a state of emergency for 42 counties. we go to meteorologist sarah wroblewski for the latest on that storm and the rain that some people are getting today. sarah? >> sarah: we already have hurricane warnings and tropical storm warnings up for part of the coast of northern florida as we got hermine still churning in the gulf. you see the outer rain bands pushing into parts of florida. to they are going to see that some of those winds starting to strength but i will be showing you this track. the current track coming up in just a few minutes. taking it locally, i do want to show you we have a lot of clouds around. a real thunderstorm push through southern worcester count

florida west coast and florida panhandle, the center of this hurricane is still offshore in the gulf of mexico. so yes, category 1 hurricane now. a weak category 1 hurricane, but it still has time to strengthen a little bit more before the center moves onlands. at that point it would start to weaken. there you see it, the rain bands around it, very heavy. some of them spawning tornado warnings as far away as the east coast of florida. we had a couple of tornado warnings around the tampa bay area. you see the heavy rain moving onshore, especially north. that's where you see the orange and the red. so a little bit closer into the tampa area. windy, rainy conditions. they've been dealing with flooding already over the last couple of days. now we're looking at the florida panhandle. tallahassee will be in the line of a direct impact from the center of this storm. tallahassee now starting to see some of the rain moving onshore. this is their first view of rainfall. but that will only be getting heavier as this storm approaches land. the center of this hurricane, there it is, right there,

(gov. rick scott, florida) we're going to have storm surge, we're going go across the state. parts of florida are already feeling the effects of hermine. walked in my garage and there's a river in my garage. i've been watching the water, watching it rise, so if it gets to a certain point, then i will leave. the tropical storm could become a hurricane by the time it officially makes landfall along florida's gulf coast, sometime tonight (gov. rick scott, florida) we're going to have storm surge, we're going to have rain, we have the risk of tornado, and this is going to go across the state. it's going to start some ti most of the northern part of the state. we're going to see a lot of rain, especially on the east, the southeast side of this storm. and if tropical storm hermine strengthens into a hurricane, it will be the first to make landfall in florida in more than a decade.
