now we're looking at the florida panhandle. tallahassee will be in the line of a direct impact from the center of this storm. tallahassee now starting to see some of the rain moving onshore. this is their first view of rainfall. but that will only be getting heavier as this storm approaches land. the center of this hurricane, there it is, right there, about 130 miles away from land. so again, it's expected to move along the florida panhandle as we go through tonight and very early tomorrow morning. and this hurricane will be causing very high winds through florida. and also some storm surge. let's look at some of the buoy data. winds 40 miles an hour offshore. wave heights close to 11 feet. closer to the center of the storm and florida panhandle, wave heights close to 20 feet. winds gusting near 50 miles an hour. but again, those conditions expected to be stronger as the storm approaches land. now, this storm will be impacting part of our area over the labor day holiday weekend. so we've adjusted the forecast because of that. c

this to the panhandle, that is a hurricane warning. for our area, it is a tropical storm warning. and tropical storm-force conditions within 36 hours. this is the forecast as of 2:00 this morning. another update will come in within the hour. but the latest forecast has it a category one hurricane this evening with 75 miles per hour winds just off the panama city coastline, coming onshore and through friday morning, notice, it's still along the i-10 corridor. so we could still see rain on friday before it finally heads into the atlantic. the center of the storm and they found a flight level wind speed of 75 miles per hour meaning the system is strengthening. we could get that update very soon. you see the yellow shade area. this is the potential of where the tropical storm-force winds could be. notice this afternoon, they're still well offshore. but with an onshore south to southwesterly wind the water is going to pile up on the coast in the bay so any rain that falls doesn't have anywhere an issue. and tonight, we could get tropical storm-force winds in places like citrus and hern

. >> it will when it makes landfall later tonight, around midnight or so in the panhandle. it's about 100 miles offshore and moving northeast at about 14 miles per hour. according to hurricane center, some very strong winds through pinellas county right now racing through the area. so watch for high wind gusts. you can see southwest at 40 miles per hour. south winds at 38 miles per hour. we've been tracking this on vipir and other systems. you can see the trees on the bit. when you see these bands ashore, they can be very, very strong. this is the 5:00 advisory with 75 mile-per-hour winds. in the grand scheme of things, the intensities aren't that great. it's a category 1 hurricane. it's formable, but it's a category 1 hurricane. still doing damage to many folks and likely will the next tropical storm warnings west coast of florida. nasty line of thunderstorms and showers and high winds coming ashore. also the possibility. we've seen this. tornado warnings are possible as it moves ashore. moving at 45 miles per hour to the north/northeast. so know that within this areas it

and this will continue to move closer to the panhandle it does pick up. you have to figure all of those live oak trees, those big trees in the tallahassee area down onto the coast you have them close to 80 or 8 there will be significant damage. at the favorable thing to do, is that almost all of the wind in the rghis east of the center. so as it moves off to the north and pushes a lot about rain to the east because of that wind that we have talked about. wil weather to the eastern side right along the interstate, and up through southern georgia as well. that's our forecast and clearly, the winds will continue to be an issue immediately. but i want to go back, we can call that radar backup. and i think that we are looking at -- the warnings are still in effect and, at this point in time you can probably toss it back because this will go on until 6 pm. in my opinion, the threat is winding down down to near zero. but there are many more that can develop over the next several hours. so there it is. that is a look at the live radar. and if we pop in that area

now a category 1 hurricane that will make landfall in the florida panhandle. the first hurricane landfall in 11 years as it moves to the northeast at a very quick rate. really picked up a forward speed because it picked up the upper level trough. and that just -- the fast steering currents tend to steer it along at a quick rate. we see these thunderstorms through the western part of citrus county. i call them thunderstorms. but mostly it's wind and wind gusts. this is offshore of new port richey to the west of pinellas county. together with the briefly violent weather along coastal areas. so pinellas county coastline from palm coast, tarpon springs to st. pete beach. this is about to come onshore. few lightning strikes. but mostly about the wind and the tornado potential. inland areas. you may see a few scattered showers, thunderstorms. but mostly it's this line off manatee and sarasota county coastline headed your way right now moving north at about 45 miles per hour. very, very intense. going to jump over to vipir here. path of that system. storm relative ve

the storm is dumping rain from manatee county all the way up into the panhandle. this is cedar key right now where many roads are flooded good morning. welcome to news channel 8 today. i am gayle guyardo. >> and i am gene ramirez. meteorologist leigh spann here tracking hurricane hermine. meredyth censullo in pasco county. jamel lanee' on clearwater beach. and ed bloodsworth is in tampa monitoring the conditions for us. first, leigh with a look at the latest. >> that's right. t's look at where hurricane hermine is. came on land as a category one hurricane in florida in 11 years. and st. marks is around the border of jefferson county. and now the center has moved up into georgia, north of i-10. leaving in its wake of course locally we have the tropical storm warnings for citrus, pasco, hillsborough and pinellas, coastal areas of manatee and sarasota counties. what does that mean? it means you could feel tropical storm-force winds. even thouge are wrapping the feeder bands around the system which includes strong winds and rotation. the possibility of seeing tornadoe

heading to the florida panhandle this evening. and then it looks to make a move to the north, i want to show that to you with the latest track that has come in. right now it's a tropical storm, there is the rain brand i showed you and it looks like this grows into i category one hurricane and then a tropical storm later tonight and the change in the forecast over the last 24 hours. late yesterday looked like the track would bring it to the delaware bay and the tracks now are bringing it farther out along the coast and probably passing us 100 miles out to sea. but look how fast it moves off cape hatteras, and slows down here, because of a blocking high pressure to the north and an upper level low pressure that interacts with this. the uncertainty comes when it slows down over the weekend. does it push closer to the coast and bring heavier rain or stay out to sea and bring us beach erosion and heavy surf. coming up we'll have spaghetti plots and we can weigh the possible affects of what this storm will be. >> thank you david. >>> yo

hurricane panhandle and northern portion of the big bend of florida. but closer to home, a tropical storm warning. and that means that we could feel tropical storm-force wind speeds in citrus, hernando and pasco within 36 hours. here's the latest forecast. 60miles per hour sustained winds. one big change, picking up forward speed finally. yesterday, it was basically stationary and now it's moving north, northeast at 12 miles per hour. this afternoon, 65 miles per hour winds, getting stronger. after midnight, it could strength on the a category one hurricane coming onshore in the panhandle west of the big bend and then through georgia and south carolina as a tropical storm before finally heading back out into the atlantic ocean. the hurricane hunters left just after midnight and they found a flight level wind speed of 75 miles per hour. making a big turn and coming back through the system. this is how we get the information for the computer models and. we believe, you see this big area tropical storm-force winds. and notice the forecast stays off the co
