beach and it's more like 50 miles from daytona beach right now. the question is what about the eyewall? the eyewall is where you have the heaviest amounts of rain, the strong effort rain. and it's right here. right here is -- okay. it's not going to work fo crosses up across the coastline is where we get the heaviest rain and strongest windings. winds. let's talk about where the storm will go next. the storm track is different than it was yesterday and it seems like every time we go to a new track, every 24 hours it tens to change. category 1 storm hugging the coast of south carolina. was going to take the dive south and east, and they were like you are evacuating a lot of people from south carolina and that was the right call. it's going to hug that coast, charleston, myrtle beach and then it makes the turn later than it looks like yesterday so it's probably only about 50 miles off the coast of north carolina if nothing changes from the way the track looks right now, and we have some computer model that pull it closer to wilmington. the wind pote

this is a live look from daytona beach. and really within the last ten minutes or so, officials have confirmed the first death in florida. the st. louisy fire district says a woman in her late 50s suffered cardiac arrest overnight, perhaps too overwhelming. here's the latest on this powerful storm. it weakened overnight into a category 3 hurricane. nearly 600,000 customers currently without power and the death toll in haiti alone, it has risen. it now sits at nearly 500 people. we have multiple reports this morning. let's first check in with meteorologist rob mayeda this morning. he's been tracking the storm for a long time now. >> has a little bit of good news along with all of this. rob, the fact that the storm has moved a bit off the coastline there. >> never really fully moving, the center of the storm inland. places like orlando, inland locations, not seeing the worst of those category 3 winds right now. but the places that are seeing those hurricane-force winds along that outer eye wall. daytona beach, that storm pass

right off daytona beach, the western edge of the eye kind of brushed daytona beach. north of that, you get the flash flood warnings are out, and that's because the torrential rain beginning to come in on some of these bands. on the palm coast, there are flood warnings out now, and i'm not surprised. because it takes a little jog to the northwest, that means it's still out over the atlantic, but still very, very close. coming up ahead of that now, towards charleston into savannah, some heavy rain. it gets very shallow here, and begins to come in from off the atlantic. that will pile drive a lot of water. overnight into savannah, employ & by charleston. by sunday, things will be a lot better, but not before 8 to 12 inches of rain, and that storm surge could be huge. that's the big concern. because it's been going parallel to the coast, it's been a double whammy here with the wind. some of that storm surge could equal 10 to 11 feet around savannah, and also charleston, south carolina. back home here. all clear. looks good for chicago weather. today into this weekend, no

joining me now, nbc news ron motte who is in daytona beach. ron, you're driving around daytona beach which is also, as i understand it, an area under mandatory evacuation. what are you seeing? >> reporter: well, we're just -- we decided to take a quick ride while we can still do this, chris, so we're on the main north/south drag for all the folkses who know daytona beach. this is the beach, just to our east by a half a block or so. this is what officials, if you take a look outside, this is what they want to see is very little to no traffic at this moment. we have seen a sporadic car or two pass us, and we do know that further down the road, there is a police officer stopping vehicles making sure that they know to get inside and that they're not out here joyriding trying to be a part of this storm. we can tell you that a lot of the businesses along atlantic avenue here have not boarded up and maybe they're taking a chance thinking that if this storm, if the eye of the storm stays to our east, and over the water, that we would have pretty much

hurricane matthew passing the coast of daytona beach. governor rick scott is asking for housing for power crews who are helping the one million people who do not have power right now. sarah rosario is in daytona beach. rainy, windy, no power. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. where we're standing on daytona beach right now, we're on the opposite side of the beach just outside of our hotel. we do have power at this hotel but we're one of the only ones on this street that have power. hurricane matthew, the eye of this storm, is to the northeast of us but we're feeling wind gusts all morning long of more than 60 miles an hour. i want you to take a look at some of the damage across the street here. the roof of this building has been blown off. parts of it laying in the street and then blowing all across the street here. palm trees blowing with the wind. this is the biggest lull we've had here all morning long and we're feeling like the storm is making a turn. we're feeling like the wind direction is changing. the wind gusts are coming in wave

the eye is going right over cape canaveral and moving towards daytona beach. they are getting pummeled. there is cape canaveral. it is in titusville. 100 mile- per-hour winds. i have a friend who is that cocoa beach and they stayed. at last check they still have power. which is incredible. as it moves north, the i will stay just offshore. barely. but it is now -- jacksonville is the key. it is the storm surge. the reason is because the continental shelf off the coast drops pretty quick, but then as you head northward towards jacksonville and southeast georgia, it is cold -- it is a bomb that they are concerned about. the water cannot get to this place fast enough. storm surge is a huge deal over the next 24 hours. >>> the governor of florida is calling matthew a monster and is praying for everybody safety. >> the next day in the path is georgia. we have a report from savanna georgia. >> reporter: hurricane matthew is pushing its way up the coast as the most powerful storm the southeast has seen in a decade. >> we have been doing our best to try to be prepared.

especially around daytona beach. that's where we're going to expect that eyewall to get closer and closer in the coming hours so conditions are going to deteriorate very, very quickly and then of course later this afternoon, up where you are, chris, we're going to get that storm surge and the high winds around jacksonville. storm surge with this one is a big concern. we've been saying it all morning long. it's the water that kiss people more than the winds, and so while this has very, very powerful winds, the storm surge is a huge concern. especially around jacksonville, and into the south carolina coast where a very vulnerable part of the coastline. another gust right there. so we are going to see the possibility of 7 to 9 feet of storm surge. that's why it is so, so important to get out. you know with these hurricanes, chris, we forecast them for days and days and they move slowly. and so you have the luxury of time. you can get out ahead of the storm. and that's what we've been urging people to do. and you really

the first high tide test, good news for daytona beach. the next one unfortunately is right at the time as we were expecting that eye to be right off the coast here. we could see eight, nine, ten, 11 feet surges. that means water will get into homes and business, especially in the intercoastal water way, this weert has to find a place to go and will go to the path of least resistance. folks hunkering down in those homes, be careful. around the lunchtime hour, you might see water creeping into your home. if that eye stays well off the coast here, maybe 10, 15 miles away, we could see wind speeds upwards of 100 miles an hour. if it gets any closer, it's anybody's ball game, anybody's guess where we could see 120, 125 sustained winds and those are catastrophic obviously. but right now we're getting a little stronger. i would say these are some of the stronger winds we've seen over the past five, six hours and we're still well away from that eye. >> thank you, ron mott out on daytona beach. >> and david, what can you tell us about what you're
