rob mayeda, anything surprising? >> the snow levels for one thing. way up at 9 to 10,000 feet. rain around the fire at lake tahoe, which is good news, but the winds extremely strong. it's not chain control you have to be worried about, but wind gusts near the summit. 90 to 100 miles per hour. or higher. along interstate 80, you'll see gusts at 65 miles per hour. not until we get to monday, where some cool air finally comes in and bring the snow levels down into the sierra. most of the rain focused south of san francisco and south of the tri valley. and look at the numbers outside. rain and numbers in the mid to upper 60s around the bay area. rain totals around the peninsula almost three quarters of an inch of rain. and on the ocean-facing side of the santa cruz mountains, about 1 to 2 inches of rain. but then what happened here in san jose? not much rain. this is our rain shadow effect where the moisture is forced to rain out on the santa cruz facing sides of the mountain. and as the air descends and dries, the rain totals drop off. then the air is forced to rides up again and

i want to get straight to the forecast now with rob mayeda. he's been monitoring what's going on with hurricane matthew for the folks in florida. good morning. >> weakening slightly overnight, and this video just in from near daytona beach, as the outer bands of hurricane matthew bringing hurricane-force wind gusts across the florida coast. and offshore, we've been seeing some wind gusts up above 120 miles per hour. and there's a live view, as the heavy rain and storm surge now begins to approach at the center, just about 50 miles offshore. the latest that we have on the storm. you can see the center there just off the coast of cape canaveral, florida, where all the locket rocket launches and space-x, of course, launching there from merit island. you can see how the outer bands and the eye wall itself brushing just across cape canaveral there in florida. moving off to the north and west around daytona beach. heading into the afternoon, the threat begins to shift off to the north around jacksonville. you can see the storm center very close to t

rob mayeda kicks off the coverage. it's been fairly light so far. >> in most places north of san jose we haven't seen a whole lot. san francisco, you have a lot of clouds and 64 degrees. that's dry golden gate bridge. we have been seeing rain showers over downtown san jose. also 64 degrees. mild temperatures. you see the rain now has moved off towards alem rock and the s sunol grade. a little more approaching the coast. impressive view on the satellite. check out the area of low pressure off the coast of southern california accessing some tropical moisture. that's what makes this system particularly interesting as we have flash flood watches up just to our south from monterey county actually all the way down into southern california, the entire coast south of monterey now seeing flash flood watches as the heavier rains arrive. between this time and 5:00 this evening, not a lot of rain coming down. we think the totals will accelerate upward as we approach 1:00 a.m. some spots could close in on an inch of rain. this is t

first let's head in to rob mayeda who is tracking what is here now and what's to come for the holiday weekend. >> long story short, every 36 hours, plan on a storm arriving around the bay area. we're in the middle of storm two this week, catching a break on the lower peninsula. rain into san francisco, dublin. that rain isn't moving west to east like we're used to, going from south to north. you see heavier showers rotating offshore. that will come from 9:00 to 11:00 this morning. the showers begin to decrease as we head into the afternoon. 60s to near 70 outside. mild storm. high snow levels and still we think another half inch can fall in spots ton of the half inch to inch that's already fallen. that means big problems on the roadways this morning. >> this morning we're watching for the flooding and the spinouts. those were the issue. but the bigger issue now getting out of san francisco is the issue getting onto the lower deck of the bay bridge. what i'm told now, they're settled on folks traveling towards the eastbound deck of the bay bridge. that's the lower deck out of san franc

first let's start with meteorologist rob mayeda. we're tracking several storms. >> three over the next five days in fact approaching the bay area. more rain coming in, especially for the evening commute. not much showing up in san jose. santa cruz mountains, beginning to see showers there, half moon bay over toward san mateo, a few areas of lighter rain. more rain approaching the marin county coastline. the main focus of the storm still along the central coast. that's the center still sitting well offshore. hour-by-hour today, we will see just a few areas of lighter rain, but towards 6:00 through about 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, that's when the heavier rain starts to roll on in. even as the rain and clouds fill in during the day, mild forecast, upper 60s with the rain at times around the bay area. >> so far no real wet roadways. i have an issue. folks are swerving around highway 9, reports that there may be an animal on the roadway. that will be an issue through this area of los gatos. we'll look at travel times through the south b

let's first check in with meteorologist rob mayeda this morning. he's been tracking the storm for a long time now. >> has a little bit of good news along with all of this. rob, the fact that the storm has moved a bit off the coastline there. >> never really fully moving, the center of the storm inland. places like orlando, inland locations, not seeing the worst of those category 3 winds right now. but the places that are seeing those hurricane-force winds along that outer eye wall. daytona beach, that storm passing through. and from here, notice orlando inland, they're seeing some of the outer bands, but the strongest winds staying off look the coastline. from here, areas of daytona beach northward towards jacksonville, but it's no longer a statewide issue in terms of the worst of the wind and rain. you notice there, miami and south florida beginning to see some improving conditions there, as the storm continues to march northwestward into the afternoon. storm surge now the big issue around jacksonville, where some estimates are around high tide, t

rob mayeda will have more in just a moment. with the rainy season a few weeks off, people in the north bay can get a head start for the possibility of flooding. marin county is holding flood preparedness there starting at 10:00 a.m. at the hilton embassy streets on mckenneth parkway. >> so far, if the early season is any indication, we should be prepared for a lot of rain. we're seeing 500% of where we were last year? >> compared by october standards and the rain, it could be 200 to 5%. it's normal for parts of the north bay. especially you can see where we think we'll bring the least rain of the three we're tracking into the weekend. already parts of sonoma county and napa county, two to four inches around the county. notice what happens south of san francisco. nothing in san jose. just enough to wet the ground in oakland and sfo. that same trend is continuing this morning as we have rain at times across the north bay, showers around the peninsula and san francisco. just some clouds around san jose. it is breeze sir again this

. >> let's check in with meteorologist rob mayeda. he's been tracking the storm's path for days. >> we've been seeing south florida areas, south of west palm beach now, over the danger zone, but we've been seeing the storm, with an eye wall about 50 miles wide, category 3 sustained wind of 120 miles per hour. again, slowly approaching the coast now. as you can see here, right off the coast of cape canaveral, florida, and the outer eye wall approaching merit island, cape canaveral, winds sustained anywhere from 60 to 88 miles per hour, closer to the eye itself. that's where the hurricane hunter aircraft still detecting wind speeds up to 120 miles per hour. a category 3 storm. these areas up to jacksonville today will see not only the intense winds and heavy rain, but storm surge as the wall of water kind of gets pushed inland from the coast. could be assi high as 7 to 10 ft locally across the northern coast of the atlantic coast there of florida, as we head through the afternoon. back to you. >> rob, thank you. those are the conditions

first to our meteorologist rob mayeda. >> roin totals,er more than 3 inches. sonoma county almost 5 inches. san rafael, almost 2 inches. rain along 101 in the north bay. you've got sunshine in san jose and almost 70 degrees right now. this trend will continue through the afternoon. periods of rain from the central bay northward. not so much around san jose, as we see clearing skies in the south bay, still maybe another .25 inches to .5 inches possible in the north bay then the storm moves on. here is why storm two has a subtropical boost that could increase rain rates in the mountains thursday and friday. here is the projection in terms of estimated rainfall. you'll see a huge change with storm two, especially if you're in the south bay. you notice here, no rain shadow this time. you can see san jose and the santa cruz mountains should see 1 to 2 inches of rain, locally higher around the loma fire burn scar and the so beranes fire. we'll show you that in a few minutes. >>> a 50-foot tree came down in just moments. you see it resting there pretty much on nearby

let's turn to meteorologist rob mayeda. within a few areas, florida,ens =ill start feeling the outer bands of the hurricane. >> right now we're seeing that ivtegory 4 hurricane, winds sustained at 140 miles per hour, central pressure keeps dropping which lets us know the storm is still in a strengthening phase as it approaches florida there. category 4 storm. and even if the storm center stays offshore, that means that hurricane force windfield could extend 50 miles from the center and they will likely see that impact starting this afternoon and there you see, the eye wall of the storm off the east of miami as we show you the areas affected all the way up to the atlantic coast there of georgia and you can see how the strongest winds approach right nd. e around west palm beach, an c pierce, wind speeds over 100 miles per hour, higher gusts 140 miles per hour around melbourne and cape canaveral before the hurricane makes a turn to the north around jacksonville and impacts of the storm surge, south carolina and north carolina.

let's turn to meteorologist rob mayeda. round two is going to be a duesy. >> the rain totals adding up for the first storm. notice san jose, only 56% of average. still ahead of the numbers we saw last year. in the case of the south bay especially with this next storm, we are likely to make gains in that department. as you can see, during the day thursday into friday, we'll see 1 to 2 inches of rain around the hilltops. san jose expects .75 inches of rain. the rain could fall quickly in spots near the soberanes fire burn area and cause flash flood warnings. here it is offshore of southern california, gathering energy from the south. this is what's headed our way over the next 24 hours. coming up, the timeline of when we expect the heaviest rains to arrive. >> we'll look forward to that. thank you, rob. >>> calfire is expected to present its findings after examining the burn area of the recent loma fire. as the new storm moves in, the concerns are growing about mudslides and erosion. a big worry is the burned watershed areas.

rob mayeda, you've been watching this. we've been talking about how there's a few months window, where it could depend on the swell. >> last weekend we had swells of 16 feet offshore. almost mavericks worthy. right now, 6 to 7 feet offshore. a little breezy. the low clouds from ocean beach, across the golden gate bridge, and almost to the east bay. the emeryville camera there showing you a bit of a west wind. 66 right now, and that's part of the sea breeze, the ocean air-conditioning that will drop temperatures from half moon bay into the central bay today by 10 to 15 degrees cooler than yesterday. so that's up wione of the chang we're seeing. clouds to the north. two weather systems on the way that will bring us a good chance of quite a bit of rain from late october standards. here's the outlook. some parts of the north bay could get more than 2 inches of rain. so will this pattern shift occur midway through the weekend. how much rain can we expect? we'll look at that timeline for the next couple of storms headed our way
