we are on the campus at hillsdale college in michigan today visiting with professor gary wolfrum has written a capitalist manifesto understanding the market economy and defending liberty. professor come in your book you write the roots to capitalism or ancient, so ancient that they likely predate even the language in the development of civilization. >> guest: people have been exchanging goods and services for a long time and have been making things that they've been exchanged for other things, other people so that's what market capitalism is about an exchange between a group of individuals and so i would say that it counts as a fundamental aspect where everybody is better off predates perhaps government as bob. >> host: what you sa would you t is an? >> they may trade for something because you have a 50-dollar book or something training and for a 3-dollar pokÉmon. >> host: where are we on the capitalist system to a? >> guest: if you look at the index of economic freedom it used to be fourth and now it's 12. the government tells you you can't make this trade or exchange. we will tell

>> host: hillsdale college president larry arn, what was your goal with your book, "churchill's trial: winston churchill and the salvation-free government," what are we going to learn? >> guest: ing by my goal in the book was to state that, and so that's what i set out to do. >> host: what did you learn? >> guest: oh, a lot. the book was much harder to write than i thought it would be. by the time i started the book, i'd been studying churchill for about 40 years. it takes that long, i think. he wrote so very much. and i made the author's terrible mistake of being, thinking it would be relatively easy compared to other things i've written. it was much harder than i thought because when you start writing it down and you start trying to give an account of the main things in his life, things he thought, things he stood for, things he advocated or defended, turns out they relate to one another more deeply and in more complex ways than i had imagined. and i came to understand him better, i hope and think, and it was a painful process. >> host: did you approach this book from a fan's perspe

the train or flying that he always made students drive him to the airport even when he taught here at hillsdale they would have to drive him back. it was about two and a half hours, so that is five hours to come down and go back up plus the student would have to go back so that even more than that. a huge part of his income came from colleges and speaking so he was gone most half the year he would be traveling every year until his health was bad. he had a number of positions that he would normally do them a semester. places like the university of chicago offered him three times professorship that over and over he said no. >> if one says they are a kirkian what does that mean? >> i don't think that is a proper title. he was a conformist and that is something we forget about conservatism but when it arose in the 50s, it was against conformity in the suburban culture. a deeply conservative man. his politics and views on things. in the 1950s, most conservatives were worried about this especially american males and teenagers. kirk certainly comes out of the tradition. but he uses the term individual
