i'll show you video coming out of eastern hokkaido here in northern japan where the crane, actually a popular symbol of japan out here, about 50 of them were spotted here, a national protected species in eastern hokkaido. the temperature dropped down to about minus 8 degrees. pretty incredible images these birds. you get fairly luck can we if you actually get to see them out there. definitely starting to head south with more and more cool temps setting in out here. this front here going to be one of the coldest blasts of winter yet here this year. as this does continue to push off toward the east, first we'll be seeing rainfall across parts of honshu, maybe toward parts of hokkai hokkaido. that will change over toward snowfall, some areas 20 to 30 centimeters on top of an already above-average snow base around sapporo, extending through tohoku, niigata into nagano. it's not just the snow. there's going to be vastly lower temperatures. sapporo minus 2 for the morning low. tokyo 4, flirting with the zero-degree mark, some inland areas pushing the freezing point here on thursday admonish

over hokkaido, some areas are seeing snow up to 74 centimeters. we do have a couple of areas of high pressure moving to the east. areas towards the north may deal with more snowfalll like hokkaido. but we are looking at a big cooldown toward places like chinina and the korean peninsul. wewe're talking abo a huge dror where you're going to be shifting from warm weather to much colder weather with longer sleeveves in place. and for those looking into hokkaiaido, you may be dealing with snowfall over the next 24 hours. and high wave heights. be on the lookout for that. so look at this. by sunday in beijing, we're dropping 7 degrees for the high. it's going to stay that way through monday. and look at this in tokyo.. going from 21 to 14 from sunday into monday. make sure you have your late fall/early winter type clothes reready. looking at north amamerica, we have an extended cold front moving through the deep south into the desert southwest. now, the tail end of that system is bringing occasional downpours and thunderstorms as well. we are looking at

more snowfall for parts of hokkaido. you can see in the satellite picture, northwesterly winds moving through. and upper level low bringing warmer temperatures from the south, but it's not that much. so northern areas of honshu and hokkaido, this is adding moisture. so it means cool rain for parts of tokyo. but snow for northern honshu and most of hokkaido, the white stuff. these northwesterly winds, at least for wednesday here, is some good news. and the reason for that is that you have this coming in from the northwest and pushing down towards the south, and that means some semi- clear skies expected across southern areas of kyushu. this is great news especially for the weather triple-team here. we have the satellite launch today, that is the backup, or the secondary to the next generation weather satellite. so another tool in the garage that we can use to show you some of the information displayed here for our weather forecast. and the good news, the weather looks pretty decent for it. sunny skies, high of 22, wind, w

hokkaido as well, you can expect that snowfall on saturday and sunday. even over towards monday only a high of 7 and it does cool off by sunday. across the mountains there in central japan, i know this is very autumn like, but a little taste of winter a little bit early here. actually i'll show you some video coming out of nagano prefecture, one of the more popular ski resorts out there has just recently opened here. they just started making some artificial snow opening in late october, two runs open, 15 yards wide, 400 meters long. you can see a little jump course there as well. you can get out there if you do want to scratch that itch to head out to some of the ski slopes. not until december will all ten of their slopes open up, that's just the artificial stuff and with the temperatures up in the mountains, they're definitely working hard to keep those slopes running. meanwhile back towards the west, high pressure continues tos ts dominate, keeping things on the cold side there in northeastern china. unfortunately, that high does create an inversion. a

some areas in hokkaido seeeeing the depth of around 77 centimeters. that's very impressive. so if you're a big skiing person, yoyou may be saying, who lolots of snowfall there. now, we do have a low pressure system coming alongside the pacific side of japan. as that takes place it's going to actually drive in some warmer air. that's going to change things over from more of a snowy story to a rainy story. sapporo going into the rain mix by saturday. temperatures jump up to 10 for the weekend, 8 on sunday. tokyo looking for rain on friday as that system moves through the area. then we go to nearly 20 degrees by saturday and sunday. a big warmup is in store as we go into the weekend, possibly even into the first part of the next work week. as we look at the forecast for north america, most of the united states staying relatively dry. and high pressure is driving in southerly winds into southern california. that's actually elevating temperatures into much warmer than normal conditions. we're talking about lower 30s. so definititely seeingng some v warm weather there. another low

that's why parts of hokkaido, upwards of 60 centimeters of snow on the ground at this time. i'll show you some video actually coming out from asahika asahikawa, 40 secentimeters of snowfall, two to three times higher than the average for this time of year. it has started off pretty potent this winter thus far. the morning lows already stretching across parts of tokyo, some of the coldest air thus far, farther toward the west. the good news, those winds out of the northwest are tapering off today. we have high pressure coming in but we do have a low coming in from the southwest. that's going to move that out of the way and bring widespread precipitation. the tokyo area, rainfall starting here by thursday night throughout the day on friday before tapering off into the weekend then another blast of cooler air kind of comes in behind that. for now, tokyo with a high of 13, though. partly cloudy skies. seoul, a high of 10. even over toward beijing, just 9. do remember the air rather stagnant out there so the air quality indices rather poor here today. even down toward south taipe

another low pressure system is pulling away from hokkaido. but more snow expected into your friday even in the lower elevations. furtheher down towards the sout including tokyo, it's going to stay dry for the next three days. that's good news and temperatures are going to be quite warmer compared to average for this time of year. now, tokyo will see the high with 17 degrees on friday with beautiful sunny weather once again. and temperatures could go up to the 20 degree mark on both saturday as well as sunday. that's not the case for hokkaido. it should be around 10 degrees this time of year. but the high will be 4 degrees on friday and snow will likely fall once again during the weekend. now, our colleague jonathan is visiting sapporo right now. and we are looking at beautiful fall foliage. yeah. very beautiful picture. thank you, jonathan. likely peak across tokyo late november in the area as well as kyoto. so let's look forward to the colorful season. now, further down towards the south, deadly floods occurred in the central portions of vie

and plus plenty of snowfall to go around across parts of hokkaido. in fact, some areas could see as much as 40 centimeters accumulating over the next 24 hours. also we're looking at wind gusts about 126 kilometers per hour out here along the western seaboards. just a tight pressure gradient coming onshore with that low pressure area and of course waves could be as high as 6 meters. as i mentioned we do have tornado advisories if play ies . maybe hail mixed in with that as well. lot of rough weather back toward the north. at least tokyo is looking at clearing conditions, same back toward the west. one thing i do want to know across northeastern china, we have high pressure in place. that does bring in the risk of reduced air quality. actually across beijing the next several days, that's something we're going to be wanting to watch out for. me meanwhile down toward the south, do want to talk about the tropics a little bit here. first across the indochina pence larks the northeast monsoon, start of the northeast monsoon continuing to move in. that's the

the top picture in hokkaido to give you an i idea what it look like. by the way, last week it wasn't this snow, but now we're seeing the snow for this area of the country during the weekend. 23 centimeters of snow was reported at peak on sunday. over 20 secentimeters of snowfa took place in early november. that is the first time in 21 years in this particular area. also in another portion of ho hokkaido 50 centimeters of snow there being reported. definitely seeing a lot more in terms of thehe wintry precipitatation and more is o oe way. as we go forward in time. let me show you what is happening on the map here. high pressure that is place. that is bringing in a southerly flow along with the warm sector of this low pressure system that is located over the sea of japan. that's going to help elevate the temperatures as we go into tuesday and that will create more of a rainy type situation. that would change as we go into wednesday because then the colder air wrapsps back around d drop t the temperatures back do. in factct, not just for norther japan, bu

probably across parts of hokkaido or the higher elevations, but you probably want to have an umbrella with you in the tokyo area. back towards the west, already looking at some showers here on your friday, shanghai with a high of 12, taipei at 24. and down toward the south, here into manilla, we have a high of 31. some scattered showers there, that is actually partly due to our tropical storm now that was just recently upgraded from a tropical depression, now tracking off towards the west, all right widespread warning are in place. we have that moisture wrapping around coming onshore. there has been travel delays, mainly ferries, for in between a lot of these islands, at a stand still, some rough see seas out there. even though this is on the low end of the spectrum, it's not a typhoon by any mean, it's going to cause some problems out here and we'll continue to monitor that situation as it develops over the coming days. as we take a look here back towards the americas, some mixed precipitation there, over in parts of new england, ontario and also quebec, high pressure setting up, dom

a warm ocean current over honshu, and then it dumps here along the mountains of central honshu and hokkaido. and you're thinking, i'm in tokyo, where's the snow? the mountains act like a wall and stop all that accumulation from the higher elevation. so by the time we get to tokyo, typically the air is much drier. that's why we often see chapped lips or we have the dry air advisories in place because of the northwesterly winds. that is going to taper off as we go ahead into wednesday. clear conditions in wednesday morning many now we have another low coming in from the west, and that's going to usher in moisture. much of japan looking at widespread rainfall later this week. 11 by the time wednesday comes around, partly cloudy skies. showers working their way in. even sapporo, but by thursday, or actually we'll be seeing rain in higher elevations and could be seeing snowfall. i want to mention mongolia and eastern china and how about far eastern russia where this cold air is coming from. it is exceptionally chilly. this location, about 2,000 people live there in far eastern russia. a high of

further towards hokkaido you get snow around this time of year. but the difference further down to the south is the fact that we have a lot of cold air now being pushed in from the north and that's where we are going to see that change. coming up on thursday morning, we're going to see that cold air really try to push its way into the areas and ovever the mountains. so, because of this, we're lookining at the chance that wel see see snow into metro tokyo. flurries, i don't know about accumulation. how much snow starts to fall and how cool it gets. the chance is there. up to five centimeters is possible even into the metro portions of tokyo. look at this further towards the west and into the western areas of tokyo and the prefectures you're looking at ten centimeters or up to ten centimeters possible. going to the mountains, you can see up to 20 centimeters of snowfall. the only tiny little issue is when you have that type of snow coming into the area, it causes a little bit of commuting problems in terms of traveling problems. that's something tha

so we're expecting heavy snowfall probably up to 20 centimeters in hokkaido. and waves are going to be quite hihigh a as well. so the northern areas will see some quite chilly weather as well as stormy conditions. now, heavy rain warnings in place for vancouver islands as well as vancouver. watch out for flash floods and water pooling on roads. there's a high pressure system over the western united states to come across the area. but along this frontal sysystem there' a chance for s severe atather towardsds michigan. watch out for gusting winds and large hail. and temperatures are going to be as follows. 26 degrees in the u.s. capital. 21 degrees in new york city with partly sunny conditions on wednesday. but the warm weather will likely change quite significantly within the next couple of days. for example, new york city, you'll see a high of 21 on wednesday. down to 12 degrees by your friday. boston, 19 on wednesday. down to 9 degrees. so watch out for the significant temperature drop. all right. that's it for me now. here's the extended forecast. >>> winter

it picks up moisture and it's been dumping snowfall across hokkaido through tu hokeu, heading through the next 24 hours. the big thing i'm looking at is that as we go ahead over the next 24 hours, those cool northerly winds will continue to dominate. typically that stays along the west coast. along the sea of japan coastline because the mountains really block any snowfall from making it over to the east. but we have a low developing down to the southwest. that's going to lift and pull towards the north. you can see right in there, plenty of moisture in the tokyo area, below freezing temperatures. some of the white stuff showing up there, through the overnight hours. expecting temperatures to continue to drop off wednesday into thursday morning. starting off as rain, but look at that, snow in our forecast. just prior to sunrise out here across most of the tokyo area. some areas in the metro locations could see about two to three centimeters. outside of it, to the north, into sightama, to tosh eegy and, about five centimeters, a little bit of snowfall. heaviest back to the west, nagano

widespread snowfall across parts of hokkaido today. specifically over to sapporo and also asa hi, we've seen over 30 centimeters of snowfall in the past 24 hours. the main reason for this is these northwesterly winds. and you're expecting that into thursday. central and western japan over to the korean peninsula, we're seeing high pressure working its way in. that means clear skies, tokyo with a high of 16. beijing getting up to 11 as well. and you're also looking at hazy conditions and poor air quality because of that stagnant air that's sitting in over a lot of the cities. easterly flow off producing showers on shore around shanghai, something to watch out for. you might want to have an umbrella with you. some storms out across europe, any travel plans for northern europe, might see some delays. we have one low that is pushing through germany into poland. and some red-level warnings in a few locations winds about 70 kilometers per hour, heading into poland. also heavy snowfall, because this front, as it pushes east, not quite blizzar

look at these streaks coming over the sea of japan and moving into hokkaido region of japan. we are expecting those areas to be contending with more snow. for us here in tokyo, the rain and snow factor, the maker, is the low pressure system that has pushed further toward the east. so a lot of that is wrapping up. still a misty situation possible outside from time to time and maybe a few flakes possible especially for the higher elevations. but most of the winter precipitation is gone, just for now. but the cold weather's here to stay. that's really the big key in this whole situation. we had a low pressure system bring in all that moturere, but then a a surge of cold air that covered from the surface level all the e way to the sky. that hpeped to cryrystallize an bring big snow flakes from time to time during the daytime hours. most of that now is starting to wrap up. to the west, we're looking at a drier pattern, but still seeing a little bit of a northerly flow. that's going to help keep temperatures a bit cool as we go foforward timime. i do want to p point out there a tro

in hokkaido japan they got almost 8 inches of snow. forecasters predicting more snow tonight, and there was rain mixed with sleet. now around here we're watching rain. view now. we were watching this the last half hour, so we'll check it out again. to the north we see more widespread rain for central virginia, richmond, up into west virginia, and even light rain in the northern counties, all this sliding to the southeast, little bit of light rain for the lake, and roxboro and soon to be the more widespread rain could make it into the northeast counties. roanoke rapids over to jackson and conway, you're more likely to get the widespread rain say than here in the triangle, so we're going to check out what's happening on the jet stream, and there's a buckling of the jet bringing a cold front into the area, and also an upper area of low pressure in the southwest, it's a cut off low, so not moving a lot because it's cut off from the main jet the next few day, then the main jet and a retreating area of high pressure. the upper level low will
