i'll show you video coming out of eastern hokkaido here in northern japan where the crane, actually a popular symbol of japan out here, about 50 of them were spotted here, a national protected species in eastern hokkaido. the temperature dropped down to about minus 8 degrees. pretty incredible images these birds. you get fairly luck can we if you actually get to see them out there. definitely starting to head south with more and more cool temps setting in out here. this front here going to be one of the coldest blasts of winter yet here this year. as this does continue to push off toward the east, first we'll be seeing rainfall across parts of honshu, maybe toward parts of hokkai hokkaido. that will change over toward snowfall, some areas 20 to 30 centimeters on top of an already above-average snow base around sapporo, extending through tohoku, niigata into nagano. it's not just the snow. there's going to be vastly lower temperatures. sapporo minus 2 for the morning low. tokyo 4, flirting with the zero-degree mark, some inland areas pushing the freezing point here on thursday admonish

more snowfall for parts of hokkaido. you can see in the satellite picture, northwesterly winds moving through. and upper level low bringing warmer temperatures from the south, but it's not that much. so northern areas of honshu and hokkaido, this is adding moisture. so it means cool rain for parts of tokyo. but snow for northern honshu and most of hokkaido, the white stuff. these northwesterly winds, at least for wednesday here, is some good news. and the reason for that is that you have this coming in from the northwest and pushing down towards the south, and that means some semi- clear skies expected across southern areas of kyushu. this is great news especially for the weather triple-team here. we have the satellite launch today, that is the backup, or the secondary to the next generation weather satellite. so another tool in the garage that we can use to show you some of the information displayed here for our weather forecast. and the good news, the weather looks pretty decent for it. sunny skies, high of 22, wind, w

that's why parts of hokkaido, upwards of 60 centimeters of snow on the ground at this time. i'll show you some video actually coming out from asahika asahikawa, 40 secentimeters of snowfall, two to three times higher than the average for this time of year. it has started off pretty potent this winter thus far. the morning lows already stretching across parts of tokyo, some of the coldest air thus far, farther toward the west. the good news, those winds out of the northwest are tapering off today. we have high pressure coming in but we do have a low coming in from the southwest. that's going to move that out of the way and bring widespread precipitation. the tokyo area, rainfall starting here by thursday night throughout the day on friday before tapering off into the weekend then another blast of cooler air kind of comes in behind that. for now, tokyo with a high of 13, though. partly cloudy skies. seoul, a high of 10. even over toward beijing, just 9. do remember the air rather stagnant out there so the air quality indices rather poor here today. even down toward south taipe
