nbc's mark matthews joins us there. and how is this playing with people in general? >> reporter: just right after donald trump was elected, the mayor and board of supervisors stood inside city hall and promised that they would protect undocumented people in san francisco from the trump administration. david campose says put $5 million up for lawyers, put teeth in that pledge. on the steps of city hall, supervisor david campose reminded them of the mayor's promise. >> you can't on one hand say you're a century city and on the other hand not support a program, a proposal that makes sure that we actually are a sanctuary city. >> reporter: he says the may's been critical of his propose tool spend $5 million a year on lawyers for those facing deportation. the money would fund 10 lawyers in the office of the public defender. >> in the united states right now you could spend months and years in jail without a lawyer. this is a shame and we need to change it. >> reporter: 31-year-old was one of more than a thousand facing deportation two years ago until her cousin got her a
