let me go to phil mattingly in new jersey with some breaking news. phil, what are you hearing? >> reporter: poppy, i think one of the more interesting meetings, we've been focused on the mitt romney meeting. but what we just saw was retired marine general james mattis walk out of a rather long meeting with president-elect donald trump. i'm told from trump's transition sources there's a good reason that meeting was long. donald trump is very intrigued about the idea of general mattis ending up in his cabinet, ending up in his administration. we've been talking a lot about various candidates, what positions they may end up, and what i'm told is a leading candidate to be defense secretary is james mattis. his name has been floating about over the last couple of weeks. but i'm told definitively now that the president-elect is very intrigued about the possibility of james mattis ending up in his cabinet. and just for background, james mattis was very well known during his time in the military as a general in the marines, very well known for his service in iraq and known as being bip

phil mattingly, why the focus on north carolina. >> if you look at all of the possibilities donald trump has to get to the white house, every last one includes having to win north carolina. that's why you've seen president obama down here, that's why you'll see bernie sanders on stage, michelle obama was here as well, every top clinton campaign sur gas happen here, will continue to come here and that's why hillary clinton will be here as well. brooke, look at the state of north carolina and get a sense of where things are. in 2008 president obama won this state. 2012 mitt romney did. now, the clinton campaign looks around right now and they like where they're situated. consistently they've polled one and two points ahead of donald trump in the state but as you dig through the early vote, there are some areas of concern, most prominently the african-american vote is down from 2012. republicans are looking to their early vote turnout saying look, we're doing well in north carolina. but brooke in talking with clinton advisors they make two crucial points. first, president obama is not on th

phil mattingly, outside trump tower with an update. a lot going on, phil. meetings, facing a recount and possibly internal squabbling from trump tower that became very public over the weekend. where do you want to begin? >> reporter: the last part first. the most interesting. connect it to potential selections, potential cabinet picks going on here. the reality is this -- kellyanne conway, president-elect's campaign manager throughout the course of the best parts of his campaign including the part where he won has become very public in criticism of the possibility of 2012 nominee mitt romney being selected at secretary of state. reasons pretty clear. extraordinarily critical of donald trump and the trump campaign throughout the primary process and general election process and there is a sense there should be a loyalty test of some sort. particularly for somebody so vociferous in criticism throughout the campaign. here's the thing, kate. this is important to note. we're not used to seeing this. these types of issues, transition process, cabinet selections, a

cnn's phil mattingly has the late details and joins us now. phil, what are you learn tonight? >> reporter: big league to the tune of $25 million. that's the tune of the settlement, as you noted, that will go out to about 6,000 students of the for-profit education institution, i guess we can with call it. look, an interesting element here is this. donald trump in the trial that was in this case was facing the very real probability that as president-elect, he would have to take the stand. what this does, what this settlement does is take that off the table. it puts to bed an issue that not only had been plaguing his campaign for much of the last 18 months, but plaguing his personal business operation for the last couple of years. that is now gone. as you noted, the trump organization, very keen to point out that they admitted no wrongdoing. actually saying that they felt like they could have won this case. but when it comes to what was important going forward, clearing the decks, getting this off the table and off their plate was a very important component of things. and when yo

cnn's phil mattingly is following the story and joins me live from bedminister, new jersey. phil, it seems that trump really took the additional first step in trying to patch up their relationship. >> yeah, no question about it. one holding the meeting at all, and what's interesting about it is throughout the course of the last week and a half we've seen a lot of -- of messages come out about the importance of loyalty to donald trump. a lot of the people he's considered his two appointments, yes, two of the three appointments yesterday were extremely important from a loyalty perspective. romney obviously doesn't fall into that category. yet donald trump willing to meet with mitt romney, mitt romney willing to come to new jersey to meet with donald trump. and donald trump and mike pence willing to come out and greet mitt romney as you're looking at it now as he arrived here. they haven't done that at trump tower for any other candidates or advisers and haven't done that for the individuals supposed to be meeting with donald trump after mitt romney today that have arrived sinc

let's bring in cnn's phil mattingly who is in dade city, florida, with clinton. did she mention the new fbi e-mail probe as she did yesterday on the stump? >> reporter: yesterday was peak for the clinton campaign. addressing the e-mail issue. today is the day to move on. you mentioned, alicia machado opening up out here for hillary clinton, really while it seems like ten years ago now one of the most effective moments of the campaign for the clinton campaign was after that first debate when they kind of set the trap and deployed the alicia machado message. hillary clinton hitting hard on that issue today, trying to reach out to women. obviously a constituency that is leaning heavily in her favor but that they hope to turn out in big ways to help in states like florida. obviously, over the course of the last 72 hours, four days even, the fbi issue has been top of everybody's list. the clinton campaign, at least right now, looking like they're trying to move past it, jake. >> phil, you describe crowds of boisterous trump and clinton supporters outside that rally. t

because conservatives on the hill, as phil mattingly pointed out, are overjoyed by this pick. they really believe tom price is the kind of person who not only has been a leading critic of obamacare but who has the know how to be able to repeal this which is going to be a complicated process, but also come up with some kind of alternative you're going to replace this with. they're trying to preserve obamacare and this is going to be very tough for them. look, it's going to be tough for them to block price. they're going to be able to exact their pound of flesh, but the reality is the democrats lost this election. the republicans won. they have the house. they have the senate. they have the white house. they campaigned on the promise of repealing and replacing obamacare. >> jeff zeleny, democrats also might be getting hurt by their own moves. democrats, they made it easier to move forward with presidential nominations and they might be facing that with some of these picks that they don't like, like tom price. even jeff sessions as ag. >> they have consequences and the consequenc

let's go first to cnn's phil mattingly in raleigh, north carolina. hillary clinton finished up her final campaign stop a short time ago. phil. >> reporter: that's exactly right, john. just a couple of hours ago the official campaigning came of, maybe you could say, mercifully to an end. what it comes down to today, hillary clinton is actually not back in new york yet. her schedule ran a little long, so she is still in the air. she will land, go vote this morning near her home in chappaqua and all of the highs will be on the javits center where she is having election night party, where everybody will be waiting to see if history is made and if it is what she has to say about it. before she had to do that, it was a closing pitch. guy, we have paid close attention to every word she's been saying over the course of her 18-month campaign. today a different tone. take a listen. >>> when your kids and grand kids ask what you did in 2016 when everything was on the line, you'll be able to say you voted for a stronger, fairer, better america! let's begin in washington with phil mattingly. good morning. >> reporter: if you were surprised steve bannon is on his way to the white house you probably haven't been paying close attention the last six weeks to donald trump's campaign. bannon was the campaign chairman and also an extremely close adviser. extremely close adviser in a small group of very close advisers. people around the trump orbit always said and always thought bannon would eventually head into the white house and continue some kind of role there. that said, the blowback also very predictable when you look across the board at what steve bannon has done over the course of his career, it has been fierce, it has been fast and it has come not just from democrats, not just from certain civil rights groups but kind of across the board. republicans included. one thing we have seen, groups immediately firing back. groups like the southern poverty law center said quote, trump should rescind this hire. in his victory speech, trump said he intended to be president for quot

>> phil mattingly reporting live from chappaqua, new york, this morning. it's been a blitz for the campaigns and the surrogates. cnn's athena jones following all of this from the white house. good morning. >> good morning, carol. this is it. it's the big final push with just seven days to go. so you have the candidates and their surrogates covering almost every battleground state, trying to cover all their bases. let's start with president obama. he heads to columbus, ohio, today. this is the first stop in what the white house is calling an aggressive travel schedule this week to try to make the case for clinton. he's also going to make three stops in north carolina and two stops in florida this week. and it's not just the president who's going to be out campaigning for clinton. you have vice president biden, who's going to be in charlotte, north carolina. former president bill clinton is campaigning in florida today, as is hillary clinton herself. senator tim kaine is in wisconsin. and senator bernie sanders is making several stops in new hampshire. that

>> phil mattingly, thanks. let's talk about why hillary clinton is where she and is donald trump as well. john king back to break it down. the national polls show a small clinton lead. what's new? >> the new hampshire poll has the trump campaign thinking new hampshire is back in play. a poll conducted 42-42 among the state of new hampshire. out west, the whole campaign could the never trump conservative challenger evan mcmullin win utah? one poll had him near the top but now we're seeing conservative consolidation. donald trump, that is not healthy for the republican nominee at 37. mitt romney got 73%. but at least donald trump leading in utah. you are seeing conservative consolidation. that is two pieces of good news for trump. look at the state of georgia. traditionally a ruby red state. a dead heat there in georgia. the clinton campaign working the early voting there. they don't think they can win it but numbers like this maybe they have a shot. >> so trump does need to crack what democrats call the blue wal
