joining us now is senator chris murphy of connecticut. thank you very much for being here with us tonight. i feel like the question that we have to sort of contend with right now is whether it's better or worse if this was an accident. if the president-elect is ignorant of the sensitivities here and what this might mean for our relationship with the other most powerful nation on earth. or whether this is just real off the hook radicalism, a huge change in american foreign policy, that he means deliberately, and he's just doing it while president obama is still in office. which do you think it is? >> well, i tend to think it's the first. especially given the context, this wasn't just today's phone call with the president of taiwan, it was also a breezy invitation to the president of the philippines to come visit the united states after a year in which he's ordered or at least condoned the extra judicial killing of thousands of his civilians, it was a call with the head of the pakistani government in which he suggested that the u.s. would b

joining me now senator chris murphy of connecticut. senator, first your reaction to the president officially calling for this report which i assume a declassified version will be made public. >> i think this is incredibly important in part because we'll have some material to work with at the beginning of next year. i would argue what's much more important is next year the republican congress in some way, shape or form start their own inquiry. we've heard today and in the recent days that everyone from john mccain to lindsey graham, even to bob corker on the foreign relations committee are planning on starting these inqu inquiries, and they should. because if you look back to the cold war, if we ever had evidence that the russians were trying to affect our parties, today it might be an attempt to influence an election against democrats but russia will be no less willing to influence an election against republicans in the future if they don't feel that, "a," what they've done has been exposed and "b" we take some action. that's the next
