among the first stick action, the honolulu fire department. -- first to take action, the honolulu fire department. that day they responded to 39 callouts. three companies of firefighters raced to hickam at 8:05 to assist military crews battling multiple fires involving military aircraft, barracks and hangars. the department lost three firefighters that day. captain thomas macy of engine 4. era of engineherre one, and one from engine six. in time they awarded purple heart to those civilian firefighters injured and killed on december 7. the only u.s. civilian firefighters in history so honored. here in pearl harbor, we watch over the memorials. we also preserve the memories of those who experience the attack so that their words will live forever. the national park service keeps america's memory of the war alive for future generations. we do so to honor the past and inspire the future and to help the world learn the lessons of history. today, our uss arizona memorial stands for everyone who served in uniform during world war ii. the memorial you see across the harbor is a symbol of hope.

and his visit is getting a lot of attention here in honolulu. i spoke with a 95-year-old witness to the pearl harbor attacks who told me, it's the greatest thing in the world to have abe making this trip. he said it would be a culmination of the healing between the two nations. jake? >> athena jones no honolulu, thank you. bringing in will ripley for more on this. will, why visit pearl harbor? what is the purpose for the trip for the japanese prime minister? >> it's personal for shinzo abe. his grandfathered visited, but those visits were not publicized give ton how close the two countries were to the end of word war 2. 75 years later, president obama visited back in may and gave a speech where he talked about the importance of a world without nuclear weapons. shinzo abe expected to deliver a similar message, and this is the last opportunity for these two leaders to put this kind of public image forward before the incoming donald trump administration, and a marked shift in rhetoric where donald trump talked about an arms race, mentioned during t

he and his family are on their way to honolulu. they are going out there to take part in a commemoration ceremony for the anniversary of pearl harbor. he is one of five survivors of the attack on the uss arizona and perfectly harbor still alive today. hes was escorted through the terminal wearing his pearl harbor survivor's hat. people stopped and shook his hand and thanked him for his service. he was accompanied with the color guard. at the gate there was a celebration with cake and the captain taking a few moments to speak to the other passengers and let them know that the hero was on the plane and stopped to shake his hand as well. he is in good health. he vividly remembers the morning of december 7th and says it was only through shear luck that he survived. 1100 crew and service members died in the bombing. he will never forget their sacrifice. >> you know, they call us heroes. we're not the heroes. the heroes are the ones who gave everything, their life. they're still there. we got married and came home and got married and had

their remains were buried in 46 plots at honolulu's punch bowl cemetery. a 2015 defense department order prompted a renewed search for their identities in the hope of returning them to their families under the supervision of the agency, theunting remains of the uss oklahoma crew have been disinterred and sent to laboratories for dna and other analysis. air as november, nebraska's force base laboratory proceeded -- navy fireman third class john h. was 20 two in 1941, is one of the 49 members of the oklahoma crew who have now been identified. this october as pearl harbor's 75th anniversary neared, he was laid to rest in arlington national cemetery with full military honors. we will see that seller -- that ceremony in a few minutes followed by an interview with his niece. first, an interview with todd of the defense pow mia accounting agency. the navy has a great tradition. a lot of what the navy does, when the ship goes down in water , that becomes the final resting the navy has a great tradition. place and the formalized resting place for those sailors and
