you're watching kcrg-tv9. now, from your 24 hour news source, this is kcrg-tv9 news at 10 . the man a cedar rapids police officer shot and seriously wounded earlier this month says he's received. in a video call, jerime mitchell thanked family and friends for coming to a benefit for him tonight, and said he hopes to see them soon. family members say mitchell is in rehab after a bullet to the neck paralyzed him below the chin, earlier this month. authorities say it happened when cedar rapids officer lucas jones pulled mitchell over for a traffic stop, near coe college. police say the officer fired his gun, following some kind of altercation-- declining to give further face any charges. kcrg-tv9's forrest saunders was at the fundraiser inside the african american museum of iowa in cedar rapids. forrest, family and friends are still waiting for answers regarding the shooting? and a great deal remain. police have declined to release much more than what we just told you... including dash cam video from that night saying, early release could compromise the investigation. a lot of

live in dubuque, katie wiedemann, kcrg-tv9. a space is opening in dubuque that will allow people to get their hands onto all sorts of tools and equipment. will operate inside a building at 1781 white street. and it's thanks to a 50-thousand dollar grant from the iowa economic development authority. members of the creative center will be able to use equipment for woodworking, automotive work, blacksmithing, and music making, among others. to get that access, they'll have to pay 50 dollars per month. the creative center will also offer classes. this morning, 120 workers at losing their jobs. that's part of about 800 lay-offs by the insurance and investment company nationwide. transamerica will also be closing two offices in california and one in ohio over the course of the next year. the company says the cuts are part of a larger plan to adapt to an "increasingly competitive environment". it says it's helping the laid off workers find new jobs. the kalona creamery shop and soon. the shop has plans to start welcoming customers in

you're watching kcrg-tv9. now, from your 24 hour news source, this is kcrg-tv9 news at midday. police in tacoma washington are releasing more details on a deadly overnight standoff. the standoff started shortly after someone shot and killed a police officer responding to a domestic violence call yesterday afternoon. the officer died at the hospital. children in the home as human shields. the kids were ages 8 and 11. this morning, police detailed how they eventually brought an end to the standoff and killed the shooter. "we negotiated through the night. the negotiations failed. we went in, took one of the kids when we had a chance. he grabbed the other kid and one of our officers felt he had a shot and took it. " the standoff ended about 3:30 investigators say the suspect was armed with a rifle and threatened the children in the home. police have not identified the officer or the suspect. in south carolina, the jury has the case of a white police officer accused of shooting and killing a black man. officer michael slager shot and killed walter scott after he ran from a traffic s

you're watching kcrg-tv9. now, from your 24 hour news source, this is kcrg-tv9 news at 6. a growing rural school district needs just a few more people to say "yes." a vote on a five point four million dollar bond issue came up just 14 votes short of passing in janesville last april. at a time when most of iowa's rural school districts are shrinking, the janesville enrollment has grown about 30 percent in the last six years. the district says that's left its classrooms and gym undersized. this coming tuesday, the district will take says the biggest change this time will be the district's plea. supporters say the need is not just more space but space that meets modern needs.sot/nat for instance, steep stairs are the only way in or out of one classroom. the disabled have to use an outside door and come all the way around. and then there's the too-small-to-meet- standards main school gym. if you can't make it downtown, joe winters and i will host live coverage on kcrg 9-point-2. one man is showing off his latest catch after a fishing trip. he got a little bit more than he bargained for. riahn brewington caught a 112 pound catfish. he says he knew he had something big at the end of his line, but wasn't prepared for how big the fish truly was using a smaller fishing pole so he thought it would break. after a 30 minute battle against the beast with gills, he was finally able to get his hands on it. "he took all of the string out two times and i thought i was going to lose him. i didn't realize how big he was until i actually got my hands underneath him.
