what is penndot doing to get ready? >> reporter: jim, good evening. one word, salt. they're loading up on it. behind me here you see their huge stockpile out here in norristown. if that storm does hit, if that freezing rain does make it to our roads and make things icy they want to put that salt on it, break it up. whether it was penndot in norristown or crews in philadelphia, salt is being dump need trucks. the area embracing for a wintry mix that can get nasty. the report is freezing rain overnight and the roads could get dangerous. >> our crews will be working through the night into tomorrow morning keeping roadways passable but we urge motorists to use extreme care if they must drive in these conditions. >> reporter: the work began early today from chopper6 this morning we saw crews dumping salt on route one in langhorne bucks county. salt and shovels were on shoppers lift lists and that includes dan beach he hope the storm doesn't hit but better safe than sorry. talk precautions. >> yes. >> reporter: if you have to

this penndot yard has been busy for hours. crews are going to be on the road all night long. they say the snow valley not what they concerned with. they are more concerned with the ice. after spending hours treating the roads, penndot crews return to the salt stockpile in south whitehall township to reload the truck. >> you have three or more inches, mostly plowing operations. with a storm like this, we just lay down salt and try to watch for icy conditions on the roadways. >> reporter: the allentown area saw a little snow earlier in the evening. enough to require drivers to dust off and defrost their cars. for others, a reminder to get supplies. >> here to get an ice scraper. >> reporter: the wet roads could lead to a slippery morning commute. >> already starting to get a little icy. i know we fell a little bit on campus already. >> reporter: take a look at this video from interstate 78 west in lebanon, new jersey, on saturday morning. drivers passed multiple accidents, caused by slick roads. >> realized that you might not see a ton of snow on the ground but there's a potent

you can see a penndot crew in front of the vehicle with its hazards on. it is a little bit of a sticky situation here right in the middle of the on ramp here. traffic having to move around in both directions while still over into the center. we are not seeing any massive delays. it is on the westbound side. typically, on 422, the eastbound moving towards the schuylkill is where we see the biggest delays. on river road and sweetland, that accident and crash still out in pleasantville. probably going to be there for a little bit. there was injuries on the scene here. just near the atlantic city welcome center, the right lane is closed because of that. right around creek road, really slow going. this is the northbound side, what's moving towards philadelphia, right before 29. . we are already seeing those delays. big delays on 42. if you are heading in that direction, heading towards philadelphia, give yourself a little bit of extra time. we have had a portion of 322 closed all morning between holland avenue and rock way. you can take stump road to get by an

we know penndot put crews on at midnight. we saw a couple of them on the roads this morning. what they've been able to do is limited because of the rain. the rain meant penndot was unable to pretreat the roads with brian so they've been hitting icy spots throughout the day and morning. yes, the rain is slowing, perhaps stopping soon in some areas but in areas of high jeer elevation or where the ground is cooler, expect any moisture on the roadways to be icy. when you're headed out your door, allow yourself plenty of extra time to get where you're going. really important if you do see one of those penndot crews out salting the roadways, allow them six car lengths to get their work done. very difficult to see behind them with the salt coming down on the road. reporting live in allentown, i'm pamela osborne, "nbc 10 news." >>> pamela, thanks. you can see penndot on the scene here. traffic is only squeezing by from time to time on the shoulder so as you come south of english village when you have the opportunity to get on the bethlehem pike do that. bring bethlehem pike southbound not the 309 expressway. it's kind of a mess here in fort washington this afternoon. and a number of issues already on the big picture. in olney a crash at fifth and duncannon. fire department activity in overbrook along haverford avenue close to 62nd. that means septa's route 10 trollly is shuttle busing this afternoon. heading into new jersey a wreck on the eastbound side of the admiral wilson boulevard. that cleared out but emergency sign work is on 130 northbound past 38 taking out the right lane. and in maurice river township watching a fire location this afternoon it's blocking off route 49 weather bee road a local alternate. new castle county a crash along route four churchman's road but that's in the process of clearing out. let's grab the ipad do the commuter report on this fin

penndot crews were out brining route 12 ahead of a wintry mix. some of the northwest suburbs could get a dose of snow and the rest of us are in for some rain. david murphy has a check of the accuweather forecast. >> the more effective that brine will be early tomorrow morning a bit of a problem. for now cloud cover is sweepling the region and the sunshine is beginning to punch holes in the clouds and the farther south you go the more sun you have got for now and the rest of afternoon clouds mix with sun and may break out more sun later in the afternoon. 44 in philadelphia though so we are on the chilly side. 40 in allentown un43 in wilmington and 45 in millville and 41 in trenton and 43 in cape may. winds have picked up a bit after the sun has come up a bit. and we were down in the single digits and now winds in the teens. not a horrific wind that will knock the hat or your head but it adds to the chill quifeel. we'll go for a high of 45 degrees right around 3:00 and back to 43 by 4:00 and back into the 30s as soon as 6:00 and 35 by 8:00 and clos

"action news" reporter bob brooks is live at the penndot yard in norristown. let's set the stage with cecily tynan and accuweather. >> jim this is a two part storm system each part occurring on each day of the weekend and double scan live showing the first is a warm front that's create something snow across the midwest. this is streaking to the east and this will be filling in in the overnight hours. so, there is a winter weather advisory, goes into effect at 10 o'clock tonight but i really think most of the action occurs in the wee hours of the morning and then these advisories will be expiring from the south to the north as we get a changeover to first ice and then rain as the system pulls in a lot of very warm air. temperatures right now certainly anything but warm. it's 24 degrees in philadelphia, another brutally cold day.

schuylkill between the boulevard and montgomery drive , penndot doing some maintenance here on the pig sign that kind of goes across all of the lanes. owe bottom line coming into the city right now eastbound, only that far right shoulder is opened and through the overnight they have been blocking traffic, for maybe five or ten minutes or so. when they block traffic you get the a backup. i got stuck in on the way in a westbound they got a number, they have two lanes opened as opposed to one. so right now give yourself some extra time and pay attention. this early in the morning folks have a tendency to go faster on the the schuylkill because there is not the a lot of volume out there other closure is the vine street expressway, the vine street expressway blocked between the schuykill, and broad street, again, until about 5:00 o'clock. ben franklin looking good, we can at least see sky scrapers this morning unlike this time yesterday, they are also still working south on i-95, as you work your way in to northeast philadelphia, between academy and cottman avenue, they will be out there un

penndot actually started work on thursday, as crews treated roads with de-ice and brine, also asking drivers for breathing room while the plows are out. >> maintain at least twice the following distance they normally would from the vehicle in front of them, remove snow and ice from their vehicle before they leave on their trip, allow six car lengths behind our plow trucks to allow our guys to do their jobs. >> penndot says salt is effective for three, four hours, but crews must circle back. one more thing, penndot says, don't try to pass those plow trucks. >> conshohocken police say dispute ended when a man who relies on the use after wheelchair stabbed his aunt to death. the incident happened friday morning at ninth and hollow well street. investigators tell "eyewitness news", the victim was stabbed more than 20 times. and that two had a troubled relationship. the man is now facing charges. >> the man police say shot folcroft police officer back in june will be held on trial on all charges. prosecutors say 33 year old dante brooks islands fired seven shots at officer christopher dor
