wisconsin senator ron johnson. but first with us in the studio to start off our discussion, our msnbc political analyst any dole wallace and pullitier prize winner columnist eugene robinson. nicole, on tillerson, what do you make of it? >> i don't think this is about tillerson. i think this is about putin have be instincts about russia -- did i say putin? i meant trump. having a body of statements about about putin. we talked last night about lindsey graham, marco rubio, who are not really in sync with donald trump's musings about putin. so i think they will use the questioning of rex tillerson to sort of probe how he as secretary of state will approach putin's russia. will he ask for an accounting of the allegations about hacking? will he try to get list boss, donald trump, whole be president trump i guess in 36 days. closer to their view about putin and russia and about where this country should stand in terms of being more adversarial or at left tougher. >> eugene, i'm looking at your latest column. trump is ass

how do you think this is going to go, ron? >> i think this is a very revealing and consequential choice in a couple different respects. a lot of the domestic policy appointments that president-elect trump has made could have been made by any republican. many of the cabinet officers are people that other republicans might have picked. rex tillerson is someone who is unimaginable, i think, that any of the other republican presidential candidates would have picked. it reflects the reality that donald trump's foreign views of america's interangz wiction wit world much more than his domestic agenda where he is pursuing small government and less taxes and regulation. so, i think tillerson is the embodiment of the way trump is a challenge and rejection of many of the things that more traditional foreign policy thinkers in the senate believe. you know, donald trump has very little margin for error. the republicans only have 52 seats. marco rubio, lindsey graham and john mccain all expressed serious reservations about the nomination. t

ron, you hear the reporting there. what do you think -- so many people, their jaws seem to be dropping over this. what do you think of the fact that the president-elect weighed into this u.n. vote before the sitting administration had -- before taking office before the sitting administration had taken a position? >> well, first, the process. it is extraordinary for the president-elect to be, as with the china dispute a few days ago about the drone, to be interjecting himself so directly into these foreign policy choices. he and president obama have managed a non-aggression pact since the election. but this does strain it. you can see the strains developing. but second, and equally important, along with his nomination of the ambassador to israel, it does give you a clear indication that he will define israeli security largely in the same terms that benjamin netanyahu does, which is not necessarily what barack obama or for that matter bill clinton, their definition was. so you have an ambassador designee who has close ti
