. >> we start with meteorologist kari hall. >> good morning, laura and sam. we'll continue to see this rain mainly streaming over san francisco. we've powered up our storm ranger. it's our normal doppler radar. it's also scanning around giving us an hd view of what's happening across the area. we see the bright yellows and even a little bit of red where the rain is heaviest and it continues to move through. as we continue to the south bay, as we see much of this activity filling in, we once again see much of the heavy rain moving into parts of the east bay, tri-valley, san francisco and farther to the north as we see the rain really pouring over san francisco right now. that may cause standing water. how is it affecting the commute so far? >> we're already seeing flooding roads. let's get right to it. the biggest concern heading to the roadway flooding. they're already seeing backup as well because this isn't just carrying over to the southbound 101, anywhere between 4 to 6 standing inches of water in that area. there is roadway flooding southbound highway 80

let's turn to meteorologist kari hall. we were talking about lightning in spots. >> we've seen that, chris and sam. we're still seeing some spotty showers, but i haven't seen the lightning lately. but you've probably heard those rumbles of thunder and in some spots across the bay area, we have some very active storm cells rolling through. right now we're seeing much of this activity calming down, but still some spotty rain and some heavier downpours across the santa cruz mountains. it is a little bit of some rain we're seeing that now moving just south of santa clara, approaching the campbell area and heavier rain moving through south coyote and that will move to the east. as we get a look at what is happening over the tri-valley, rain showers moving across san ramon to the east, heading into the north bay napa seeing some of those downpours and we're also getting a pretty good cell of some rain moving through vacaville. we will see this rain taper off as we go into the afternoon, but still a chance of any spotty showers a

but first let's start with meteorologist kari hall. and kari, steady but light for the rest of the day? >> it's going to be very hit or miss as we get a look now at the radar. some of that rain moving across the peninsula and into the east bay, then kind of skipping around the south bay from san jose, but you see some of the sprinkles moving from the santa cruz mountains over toward gilroy and morgan hill. the storm rangers, mountain doppler on san bruno mountain at this point moving around the bay area if need be, but right now we have it parked here to get the best view of the north and the south bay. so, here's a live look at our doppler radar truck. we are the only ones with this and we are able to get a view of what's happening aa round the bay area. as we get a look now at this, we see that the light rain is moving from union city over toward pleasanton as well as sunol. this light rain will continue to move through as we are seeing a little bit of some breaks here and there. also for the south bay as this rain is moving from the

hamilton like kari is talking about, don't try to go to the top of that to see the snow. they will usually close it there, meaning law enforcement, chp and local law enforcement. water main break off of el cami camino. it is open and that's north of woodside. major roadways are okay through redwood city. that's a good drive along the peninsula. no major delays. over here we do have a 20-minute delay reported by the b.a.r.t. system. at least one saying possible 20-minute delay at of daly city because of power issues but pg&e says there's no delays from them. the b.a.r.t. police don't know about any problems as well. look at your travel times, approaching the bay bridge is great. the bay bridge is a little bit boring but we do have slick roadways. >>> i did not know this. up until today you can actually handle your cellphone while driving. today don't think about touching it. new laws in effect. that includes going completely hands free behind the wheel. >> just put it in the trunk. mike has a look at what along with what other changes you can expect. >> reporter: the calif

we'll check in with kari in just a moment. but first caltrans trying to get ahead of the next batch of rain by installing a net along highway 17. we have had such problems there. >> forcing road closures last week. kris sanchez joining us live with details on the preparations getting under way including that, kris. >> reporter: rock slides were a huge problems last week during the last round of storms. the hopest a seven-hour closure will help crews avoid that situation going forward into the next round of rain. a major rockslide shut down highway 17 in both directions for some time during the last storm, nearly crushed a news van with a photographer inside. he is okay. it was cleared away, but others followed. they will put up a net to keep the big rocks. it will shut down one northbound lane of highway 17 at vine hill road from 9:30 this morning until 4:00 this afternoon. is and drivers can expect about a 15-minute delay there. flashing signs advising of the road closures. that rock wall net is for the big rocks. we did see

but let's begin with meteorologist kari hall -- kari -- ==anim== ==kari//chroma== =wx at ck= ==laura/boxes== get's back out to the scene of that massive flooding south but we may still have some waves of rain moving in. we just had crazy amounts of rain over the past several days. and as you see in morgan hill, we've had 5 1/2 inches of rain and it may have been even higher over the santa cruz mountains we had 8 to 15 inches. and even spots like san rafael measuring a lot of rain, the amount that we should have for the whole month of january we had over a short period of time. and now once again, a few more breaks in those clouds, a chance to dry out, and a little bit of sunshine so that may help aid in that situation as we continue to monitor what is going on there. only some spotty rain lingering as we go into the late morning and early afternoon. there will be another round of rain moving in. and as we get a closer look of that area, gilroy and also to the south near hollister, we are not seeing any rain at this point. but once again it will be possible as we go through the day and

kari hall has been working hard. a special two-hour edition giving us a look at the forecast and what's ahead. >> we have a lot ahead through the day. even though a lot of areas as you wake up and look out the window it's really not raining that hard now. we had such heavy rain this morning, the winds were blasting across the bay area. things are quieting down. this is a live look outside at san jose. still wet streets and in santa rosa getting clearing there. still seeing patches of heavy rain across the south county. that will be clearing out as well. as we get a closer look at parts of the peninsula to the south bay. light showers but still very heavy rain near gilroy at this point. a steady downpour moving through the tri valley with spotty rain for parts of the north bay as the system wraps up there will be another and possibly more potent system later this afternoon with the chance of thunder and lightning or more heavy rain on the areas that are now under a flash flood warning. that continues as well for the s

kari. >> yeah, we are tracking a major storm for the weekend. expect it to bring in some heavy rain, also some strong winds. and now we've been telling you that it's been so cold this morning, but at least we do have the dry weather. here is a live look outside at san rafael as we get ready for some weekend heavy rain. you want to prepare today for that potential some of flooding. the scattered rain starts to move in late tonight and then it continues all throughout the day tomorrow and gets heavier on sunday. we could also have some strong winds, up to 40 to 50 miles per hour. now we see that the clouds are starting to move into parts of the bay area, but once again still some dry weather continuing. and it's moving a little bit closer, but we see that big cluster of those clouds tapping into some subtropical moisture. so far we've had quite a few watches, warnings, advisories issued by the national weather service. as of right now, we do see there is a high wind watch in effect for all of these areas shaded in the orange and that will be in ef

let's get straight to meteorologist kari hall, who has a look at your timeline this morning. >> good morning. we've seen the heaviest rain moving through during the overnight hours. as you head out, be mindful you do need to allow some extra time. we've had spin-outs and standing water on the roadways. as we get a live look at our radar, we've fired up our storm ranger that is scanning around the bay year. we have it parked at san bruno mountain and this is able to fill in the gaps other radars may miss. we are seeing bright reds and extending over towards the east bay and the tri-valley. we're also concerned about this area where our reporter, kris sanchez, is now. we do have a flash flood warning in effect until about 6:45 this morning. we'll see if that gets extended. we also see heavy rain for parts of the east bay in berkeley over toward the delta and down to the tri-valley. let's see what's happening on the roadways as you head out. >> kari, we are busy out on the roads. i do have the saturday light radar on where you see the shaded green. that is actually where the rain is com

i'll check in with kari right now. i don't think anybody will be coming with the incoming storms. >> no. as you head out the door, a lot of cloudy skies. a look at the timeline today. we will see pockets of heavy rain moving in anywhere across the bay area. but a pretty widespread coverage out of the rain on the radar by 9:00 in the lunchtime hour, pockets of heavy rain even through the evening commute, the storm becoming more intense as we go through the day with a lot of reds and yellows with expense and heavy downpours. strong winds. winds gusting 40 to 50 miles per hour. even at 9:00 tonight. it becomes scattered but still pockets of heavy rain tonight. that's the first wave rain that will be moving in. then we will have more of this as we go into the day tomorrow as well as the next storm system is set to arrive early friday morning. coming up 6:13. eye look at the squaw valley, alpine meadows report. >> i don't think it is weather related. it will play a factor all over. poppeding and puddling in the tri-valley,
