matt keller is live in the flood zone. matt? >> reporter: this is the command post here and they are just talking right now about the rescue operation that has finished. but listen to these, these are the numbers -- 108 people were evacuated from this area. 59 on their own. 49 by rescuers. it was a morning they will never forget. by truck, boat and even back, rescuers were taking people out of their homes this morning in hollister just off of highway 152. the first call was for a stalled car in the water at lovers lane around 2:00 a.m. and rescues from homes started at about 4:00 a.m. >> we can get you out. >> [ inaudible ]. >> reporter: it was frightening for many people. the creek was overflowing and some spots of lovers lane and san felipe were costed in waist deep -- were covered in waist deepwater. >> my mother said get up, it is flooded outside and we couldn't believe it. i think there was three feet of water. >> reporter: this woman was taken by bus to the veteran's memorial building in hollister where red cross set up a

abc7 news reporter matt keller is at highland hospital now. >> reporter: good morning. we are here at highland hospital, both men are here. band spokesperson told us that they are responsive and are being treated. we're also told we will get an update on their condition later today. this all happened in oakland last night at around 8:00. the two band members with the iconic r skpb group, tower of power, were hit by an amtrak train last night on embarcadero west in washington street, right next to yoshi's. that's the venue where they were set to take the stage. david garibaldi and marc van wageningen were not in the designated crosswalk when they were hit. david garibaldi is one of the original members of tower of power and bassist van wageningen was filling in last night. >> fantastic drummer. i can't believe that he wouldn't cross right in front of the train. that's not like him at all. >> reporter: in a statement, amtrak says the two men were trespassing on the tracks. none of the 26 pictures or crew on board were injured. the band's management is asking for prayers t

matt keller is live there. matt? >> reporter: natasha, i just spoke with the coast guard and they say today is great weather for their search. you could see one of the boats out here on the bay. they say there are calm seas, light winds and unlimited visibility. they've also sent up a coast guard helicopter. their hope, somehow this man survived the night. here is the latest video of the fremont fire department launching into the bay near the bridge. six boats from fremont, san jose and menlo park fire department and the coast guard are searching for a san jose resident kenneth maldonado, missing since late yesterday afternoon after his kayak took on water and the kayak over turned with the flotation device still inside. he hasn't been seen since. searchers are breaking up the bay into a grid and doing a slow methodical search. >> launching this morning is the best time to go out and spend the day trying to canvass this search. but at some point this weather, darkness and also the changing tide will dictate how long

let's get right to abc7 news reporter matt keller live for us at the macarthur b.a.r.t. station. >> reporter: really frustrating morning. it is really cold out here at the macarthur station. a lot of people are bundling up waiting for the next train. we've seen a lot of trains coming through over the last half hour. but one of the problems that is happening for these passengers that are coming here is they're getting stacked up at the beginning of the macarthur station so all these trains are actually stopping on the tracks long before they get to the station here, so the delays, you can really see them coming in to the station here in oakland. i talked with one passenger who was really frustrated by his morning on b.a.r.t. >> we just got here. i'm fed up. i'm getting off and going back in the other direction because i don't know how bad it's going to be up there. >> reporter: we've been hearing over the loud speaker for people to expect delays out here. if you come back out here live, you can see another train is coming in. this train was waiting outside of the station.

abc news reporter matt keller is live for us. matt? >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. when we started here in morning at 4:30, my photographer ian told me that if we start to see this drainpipe here that heads into the san lorenzo river backing up and see water coming back towards us that the river would be flooding and that we would have to get out of here. but of course, that never happened. the rain has lightened up a lot since we first arrived and that flash flood warning is set to expire in the next half hour. check out all this water, all that water causes mud and rock slides, making it very dangerous on the roads. >> i hit about a rock this big, and it destroyed my car. it's the first time the air bag has ever popped into my face and it was kind of crazy but i'm fine. i'm pretty sure they're fine. >> reporter: yeah, that was on highway 9 just outside of brook dale. there was a multi-car accident. the drivers didn't hit each other. they crashed into rocks that had fallen on to the highway. chp says the best way to drive in rain like this is to slow down since you

matt keller, abc7 news. >> matt, thank you. >>> crews in pacifica are waiting for the weather to improve before they can knock down this apartment building on a crumbling seaside cliff. the city council gave the go ahead last night to demolish the building before it cloopss into the ocean. the cliff between 310 esplanade has been eroding quickly over the past several weeks. it's going to cost the still nearly 220 nowadays thousand dollars to level it. it will be the third apartment building on esplanade to be demolished because of the erosion. >>> all the rain has pushed the loch helloman reservoir. it is the only drinking water reservoir for the city of santa cruz and it holds almost 3 billion gallons. have the reservoir full is a good way to start the new year. if you want to track the weather, you can use the abc7 news app, look at live doppler 7 any time and enable push alerts. >>> developing news in concord, residents of an apartment complex hit by a fire are waking up without water and fire this morning. 20 adults and 10 children escaped the fire last night. four units were burned.

matt keller is live with the story. >> reporter: i talked to a chp spokesperson about an hour ago and he can't remember the last time a car went into the alameda creek and now it has happened twice in less than a week. alameda creek is still roaring through niles canyon. even though the rain has stopped. around 5:00 this morning, a 27-year-old man from patterson was driving to work on niles canyon road in his gold chevy cruz when he fell asleep at the wheel. >> when he woke up half way through a turn and overcorrected and ended up in the creek. >> he was able to break through his already damaged windshield. >> when he swam to shore, he received cuts from rocks. >> someone called 911 and good samaritans stopped to help him until emergency crews arrived at the scene. he was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. this story could have been different. on saturday, jada jenkins crashed into the creek. her car was found, but jada is still missing. both cars ended up coming to rest in nearly the identical spot. but the conditions today had changed dramatically compared to saturday

matt keller is live in san jose with some answers for us. hey, matt. >> reporter: natasha, we all know our water storage isn't just in reservoirs and those are full. their also under ground. our water storage is under ground like the percolation farms here in theal madden, these are getting refilled as well, but don't stop your conservation efforts just yet. >> the phrase it is raining and we sure need it has been for the past five years but for today you could say you are tired of the rain. the u.s. drought monitor shows the bay area is no longer in a drought. that means the santa clara valley water district will evaluate keeping the water savings target at 20%. >> all of the indications are very good right now. we are going to be reevaluating where we are going forward. we are running the models to see how does this look for our water supply into 2017. >> six reservoirs in santa clara are spilling and anderson are above seismic restriction levels and must release water to get below the limits. ground water supplies are getting a boost. off

matt kel ser live at the scene with -- matt keller is live at the scene with the developing story. >> reporter: san jose police have put up the blue tarp to cover the investigation here as they continue to look at what took place early this morning. but how scary is this. right across the street here is robert sanders elementary school. students are in class right now as they have to deal with this crime scene outside their classroom doors. now check out this video. this is glass and several police evidence markers at the stop sign at mt. pleasant road, about 25 yards away, a car, a silver mercedes crashed into an suv and the windshield wipers were still going hours after the shooting. a yellow tarp over a driver's seat, a sign that the body is still there. the suv was pushed into the home's garage. a man was shot once just after 6 6:30 this morning. neighbors say this is unusual for around here. police have made no arrests and no suspects have been identified. this is the third homicide of the year here in san jose. last year there was 47, that is a 25-year high. live here in san jos

amy hollyfield and matt keller are out in the elements and we'll start with mike nicco and a look at live doppler 7 as we speak. >> we have good news. what we're dealing with a weaker storm than overnight. no watches and warnings and no advisories, and i lowered it down to 1 on the storm thanks to the showers that could lead up to a quarter of an inch in the more hidden roads and minor ponding but no orange or yellow. and even in the san ramon valley and across the dumbarton bridge and down to palo alto, it is all light and same thing down toward morgan hill and we have a little bit of snow mixing in lake county, at about 3500 feet. but the winter storm warning for north of there has expired like most of our watches and warnings. so what we're going to have moving forward are temperatures in the low to mid-50s. with a chance of a scattered light shower through about 6:00, a little bit of an uptick in the coverage during the evening hours and clearing out overnight and a bigger storm this weekend. now we do have a lot of accident this is morning. alexis tracked those. what do you have

matt keller live for us there this morning. this morning. good morning, matt. >> we wish we could hear you, matt. we're going to get back out to you in the field. we appreciate it. let's talk about power outages. >> pg&e slowly getting power back for some bay area customers. you can see there on the map all the dots in green and yellow represent a power outage and the biggest is still in the south bay with 840 customers without power. the north bay has 745 without electricity. 4,000 people in the north bay town of guerneville were left without electricity for about three hours yesterday. a tree fell on to a power line along the russian river, knocking out power to most of the time. light were out at some straunlts and employees just had to make due with what they had. >> we were still able to finish out some dinners and meals that were going as well as i can still do most of the bar. apparently our soda machine doesn't work well without power so i'm a little bit limited. >> and of course for pg&e it's all hands on deck as they try to get the

matt keller joins us live at the scene on tully road. hi, matt. >> reporter: this investigation took about four hours to complete. police believe the pedestrian started on this side of the road, but he didn't make it all the way across. police, firefighters, and paramedics rushed to tully road just before 3:45 this morning. this uber driver, on his way to pick up a passenger in his toyota prius, hid a pedestrian. >> the driver indicated he was traveling west pound and the pedestrian stepped out in front of him. >> reporter: the driver stayed at the scene and talked with police. the car's windshield was shattered. the pedestrian, believed to be in his 60s, was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. an uber spokesperson confirms a driver was involved. police are trying to figure out if there was anything the driver could have done to avoid the pedestrian. san jose police do not have an update on the pedestrian's condition. so far in san jose this year, there have been two pedestrian fatalities. >> matt, thank you. >>> in the

abc 78 news reporter matt keller is there live for us this morning. >> reporter: good morning. many people lived in this apartment complex here on esplanade avenue, and they had beautiful ocean views. well, that's because the cliff below them was eroding away. they were getting closer and closer to that ocean. that apartment complex will eventually be torn down but there's hope for others wanting to avoid that fate. according to the mercury news, the u.s. army corps of engineers will study long-term solutions to three areas here in pacifica that have been damaged by some powerful storms. that could lead to the federal government paying for much of the $6.2 million in repairs. those three areas are the pacifica pier, the seawall along boech boulevard and esplanade avenue where the apartment complexes are located. the army corps will do a three to four month study to see if the projects are of federal interest and if that's the case, they'll spend 18 months doing a feasibility study. reporting live in pacifica, matt keller, abc7 news. >>> happening today, golden gate bridge offic

matt keller is watching that for us this morning. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. when you live in the mountains, you need options, especially if you live right here on highway 9. i talked with one resident up here and she says she has three ways to get out of town here because oftentimes two of the ways are blocked. up here in the victsanta cruz mountains you're likely to see road hazards. crews are working overtime to fix problems. 11 roads have been impacted in the past month. most from the last storm. rodeo gulch road is down to one lane because the road is washed out and a new curve and stop signs mark a deep slipout on college drive. people who live up here in the mountains are used to this kind of stuff. it's not easy but they prepare the best they can. >> it's hard because when it's consistent, the trees kind of lose their ability to root and so that's when we see a lot of the slides and the trees going down, but you know, we'll buckle down and light a fire and bear through it. >> reporter: yeah, knuckle down, and of course it's not just the roads but the c

abc7 news reporter matt keller has been tracking this search all morning long. he is live for us in santa clara county. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. here's some advice for deputies for residents liing here in the santa cruz mountains. stay indoors, lock your doors, turn on all your exterior lights and if you see something suspicious, call 911. here's the latest update from deputies that came just before 2:00 a.m. it is a tweet. let me tell you what it says. suspect still at large. seen in the area of aldercroft heights and locust drive. officers were in the santa cruz mountains with their guns out looking for the suspect. it all started yesterday morning around 10:00 when a man robbed a bank of america in scotts valley. police chased him on highway 17 when he crashed near redwood estates. a scotts valley police officer fired at the suspect. the highway was shut down and the massive man hunt began. just after 10:00 last night, they got a call from a woman on weaver road saying a man armed with a knife was inside her home and had taken off in her

abc7 news reporter matt keller is live in san jose at one of the access points for rescuers. >> reporter: good morning. we've been in contact with the missing man's girlfriend, and she told us he is an incredible man and is asking for prayers. here is a picture of the missing man. he is 32-year-old san jose resident kenneth maldonado. his girlfriend told us he was out on the bay fishing with a friend in separate boats yesterday. last time he contacted her was with a text around 2:00 in the afternoon saying his kayak was taking on water. two people were in the water near the dumbarton railroad trestle. men low fire found one man on a raft. he said he looked back, flotation vests still inside and no sign of his friend. more than a dozen rescue boats and two helicopters were sent out here. drones were also used to search the shoreline. i spoke with the coast guard, they say they have one boat on the water right now but they say at sunrise, they're going to be sending out more resources, including a coast guard helicopter. reporting live in alviso, matt keller, abc7 news. >>> new this mornin

matt keller is live there this morning. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. i know it's dark right now but when you stand here during the day, you have a beautiful ocean view frommes pla nad avenue but now all you see are chain link fences. that's because there's a giant sinkhole down below on this path that leads you to the ocean. and right over here, you have an apartment complex that is surrounded by chain link fence because it's sitting so dangerously close to the cliff. yes, the ocean can be brutal but is there anything that can be done to stop this erosion? according to our media partner, the mercury news, the u.s. army corps of engineers will study long-term solutions to three areas here in pacifica that have been damaged by some powerful storms. that could lead to the federal government paying for much of the $6.2 million in repairs. those three areas are the pacifica pier, the seawall and here on esplanade avenue. it could take a year and a half to figure out if the federal government will take on those projects. reporting live in pacifica, matt kell

matt keller is there for us live this morning. >> reporter: good morning. i want to show you this road closure here. this is niles canyon road, fremont police are blocking it off. it is a long stretch of road that connects 680 to mission boulevard here in fremont so this is a very important road and i just got an update from the fremont police department, they said caltrans had come by and told them that this road will be closed until at least 8:00 this morning. one resident told me one of the mudslides is a quarter of a mile long and people are having to go towards castro valley to get out. niles canyon road is a muddy mess. we took this video about 20 minutes ago. didn't make it very far from mission boulevard before we ran into debris, brush, and thick mud. a car was parked on the side of the road with a bunch of debris underneath the vehicle. two people were actually trapped in that car and the fremont police department had to go in and take them out. water was above their wheels. alameda creek runs right next to it but that water was actually coming fr

i'm matt keller in for eric thomas with this early edition of abc news due to the warriors game. let's get right to protests happening now against president trump's new immigration ban. kate larsson is live at sfo where hundreds have gathered. kate. >> reporter: matt, the protests continues to grow here at sfo. we are upstairs on the departure level but i'm going to step out of the way. you could see hundreds of protesters downstairs on the arrivals that at that level and they have moved from the sidewalk out into the street. a lot of law enforcement here as well. sfpd and airport police and the chp trying to make sure the crowd stays orderly as well as allow the airport of course to keep operating as flights come in and out of san francisco international terminal. the crowd, from what we observed has been peaceful, but it is loud and growing. take a listen.
