tonight the quiet community of redwood estates turned into a lot zone for authorities who stood watch into the night hoping to zero in on this bank robber who set off a chase and triggered a nasty traffic jam. all lanes of the normally busy highway 17 were shut down for about nine hours both directions as heavily armed officers searched methodically house by house yard by yard in nearby redwood estates. chopper 5 captured the gridlock in the santa cruz mountains. the chp turned cars around. some drivers stuck it out on the side of the road. >> i had to turn my car off every time i stopped because it's overheating. i've been on this for two hours. >> it's kind of frustrating that this is going on especially after all the rain we've had and the road closures. >> my buddy warned me not to come this way and i did anyway and i'm paying the price. >> reporter: around 10 a.m. this man robbed the scotts valley bank and hopped into a white get-away car on northbound 17 reportedly hitting one car during his escape. scotts valley police officers chased him over the hill into santa clara county.

it's also wet from belmont to redwood city. light rain right now. this is in advance of the next storm coming in. in the sierra, chains are required on all roads leading to the mountains. they have gotten a lot of snow and there's more coming. winter storm warning until 10:00 a.m. thursday for the west slopes of the sierra. we're expecting 3 to 7 feet. and with those gusty winds do expect whiteout conditions. make sure you have your chains if you're heading there. take a look at the powder. statewide sierra snowpack is at 126% of normal so some big gains over the last several days. from our lake tahoe camera, you can see the snowy picture there. of course there has been some rain leading to flooding issues on top of the snow and causing some flooding there so that's a concern as well for now. temperatures in the 40s and the 50s here in the bay area. the storm impact scale, we have a 2. moderate strength storm late tonight into tuesday. briefdown pours. we're expecting flooding, gusty winds with trees down and there's even a chance of thunderstorms,

right now it looks like it is going to point mainly san jose south or redwood city south, that means san jose mountains are going to get hammered. get yourself prepared. rain starts on saturday, not a huge deal, kind of what we just experienced and then the real stuff rose in saturday night into sunday morning. the atmospheric river will focus itself mainly, at least according to this model south of san francisco. here we are on saturday, these are rainfall totals. an inch and a half in san francisco. watch this, san jose goes up to 8 inches. i have never seen the model be that aggressive. this is the bull's-eye, if that transpires, yes, you've's creek will go over its boundary. we will see flood advisories and flood warnings, guarantee. at this point maybe the north bay gets a break, but we will see significant rain and then you have the issue with the high snow level. this stuff will drop heavy rain on snow that have fallen and there is going to be big melt. we have flood watch is up for those guys. they already have the flood watch is up for 48 hours from now. we will be fine, but

pretty much across the bay area 52 in santa rosa. 54 in redwood city. freemont a little warmer, 55 degrees and wet basically. so taking a look at our seven day forecast. tomorrow that first round of storms is going to move in. followed by a third day which is going to have some showers here and there. then round number two is going the hit us on friday. and then we'll have a brief break on saturday, it might dry out a little bit so if you have plans outside. saturday is the only day that you might be able to do it. then round number three is going to roll in on sunday with wind and rain again. and then monday, things will start to dry out. we'll have some lingering showers. but for the most part they're going to start to move out of the bay area and then tuesday, things are going the start to dry up. our temperatures will rebound. back up close to the 60s in some places, so it's certainly going to be warm and dry at the middle of next week. in the meantime, we have several rounds of showers we have to get through. but, the take away here is it's not the
