a roof to collapse at a liquor store in south lake tahoe. the california highway patrol says two cars were briefly trapped but no one was injured when an avalanche covered a 200- foot stretch of highway 89 with up to 12 feet of snow shortly after 1 a.m. monday between the squaw valley ski resort and tahoe city, california. at south lake tahoe, fire chief jeff meston says the roof collapsed and broke a sprinkler pipe at a liquor store at about 2:45 a.m. no one was hurt. but meston told lake tahoe news there was a "ton of water on the steet" when crews arrived. he says local utility workers had to dig through more than a foot of snow to find the main shut-off valve. - animals at a nearby pet hospital have been evacuated while officials inspect neighboring businesses. the national weather service reports that 30 inches of snow fell at the heavenly ski resort at south lake tahoe between 6 a.m. sunday and 6 a.m. monday. more than 7 feet has fallen there over the past five days. the sierra nevada mountains are taking a one-two punch from winter st

kpix 5's emily turner is in south lake tahoe at heavenly with the concerns. >> reporter: what a difference a day makes. yesterday, the weather was perfect for folks who wanted to get up on the slopes and enjoy them. today, not so much. in fact, they are even potentially dangerous. they are not waging war. just fighting a battle against unsafe snow conditions. the avalanche center upgraded the sierra avalanche warning to high and the resorts are working to make sure one doesn't happen there. >> what they are actually doing is they're trying to trigger off areas that might be loose, right? they're trying to knock that sheer layer down so a skier doesn't actually knock it off. >> reporter: that's what the cannon is for. safety crews at kirkwood, heavenly and north star use that, various charges and ski well known avalanche trigger areas to knock the snow loose. here, are pictures from sierra at tahoe. groomers follow behind them overnight packing all the loose snow down. while they do all this they have to close the slopes. >> this is kind of our week to have our ski vacation with her and if

let's take a look now at south lake tahoe. they're going to get a lot of snow up there. this camera is at heavenly mountain resort. >> wayne freedman is in the north way, leslie brinkley is in the east bay but we begin with drew tuma. >> it's been raining for the better part of our day today and it continues right now. live doppler 7 active this afternoon. let's get you right down to street level, got a lot to talk about. some light rain still falling around san francisco, over the bay bridge, emeryville and berkeley. to the south we've seen pockets of dry weather but it's beginning to fill in once again. andersony veil, san mateo, fremont, some light showers. a couple of isolated downpours just to the east of san ramon. the roadways are damp and a couple of downpours around penn grove and santa rosa. but just in the past five minutes a flood advisory has been issued for the entire bay area until 8:15 this evening. what this means, the big concern is that smaller streams and creeks could overflow their banks, so be careful of ponding, especially on our roadways. this is

highway 50 towards south lake tahoe is open but chains are required between kyburz and meyers. >>> in the south bay damage from a mudslide has this part of highway 152 off limits for drivers. the debris between gilroy and mount madonna is forcing a closure at watsonville road that should last through friday. meanwhile tributaries through the pajaro river jumped its banks and flooded two homes at 101 and 25. crowds formed to catch the powerful flow of the storm runoff. >>> mudslides are also causing problems in the santa cruz mountains. chp officers shot this video along highway 17. this is near vine hill road. and a tv news van got caught under some rocks and mud. the driver is expected to be okay. >>> and across santa cruz mountains all this heavy rain isn't spelling more water from the tap. that's because the newell creek pipeline ruptured during weekend storms. operators say roughly 1500 gallons of water was gushing out every minute for hours before the pipeline was shut down. residents have been asked to cut down their water use by 30% this week during repairs. >>> time now 6:10.
