bigger risk in the sierra. in addition to the snow melt with the 9,000-foot snow level. 10 to 18 inches of rainfall. that is very significant. we could see some river levels as high as they have been since 2005. in portions of the sierra and the central valley. so specifics here for the bay area, we talked about the santa cruz mountains. the south bay, san jose. two 20 four inches of rain this weekend. four to seven inches of rainfall for the north bay. river flooding a concern. urban flooding. small streams. street, highway flooding. that is going to hawaii that's a high risk. and the mountain flooding coming off of the sierra and the santa cruz mountains will be high to the extreme. concord, 51. santa rosa, 50. san jose, 53. and san francisco, 51. so, we are chilly. but we are dry. friday, we are dry. saturday morning, the rain begins and it will not let up until late sunday night and early monday morning. guess what? there is another storm moving in tuesday and wednesday. one note here, 18 inches of rainfall

bumper to bumper traffic leaving the sierra. families getting in that last bit of fun, the holiday is over. there was a lot of snow in the mountains to enjoy. some people were not prepared. >> i was not expecting it at all. >> reporter: people putting on chains so they can get to their final destination. and if their destination happened to be silicon valley, it would be wise to stay bundled up. we knew it would be a cold night and we went looking for snow, and, look, we found it. we're on top of mount hamilton and it is snowing and it's coming down pretty hard. i'm here to prove you don't have to go to the sierra to find it. a lot of snow on the ground at lick observe tri. the roads slick and a lot of fog, making the windy road to the top dangerous for drivers. in the east bay, the temperatures are expected to drop, not enough to snow, but i shared my experience with people taking a stroll in downtown pleasanton. >> that's beautiful. >> if it snowed here in pleasanton and stuck to the ground i'd be out playing in it. >> i'm jus

so the experts say it's all about the snowfall in the sierra. >> i love the rain. it's great. >> reporter: it's music to california's ears, heavy constant raindrops, each one a remedy for the drought. and even better, this week's snowfall in the sierra. >> the snow pack is going to make the difference. >> reporter: the several feet of new snow is expected to considerably change the look of california's drought map president last here at this time 45% of the state was in an exceptional drought, the worst possible rating. this year only 18% of california remains that dry. >> the biggest reservoir is all of the snow that falls in the winter. when it melts it can fill the reservoirs throughout the state. >> reporter: half of the water in santa clara among others comes from outside sources and it's incredibly dependent on the sierra snow pack. lexington was just one reservoir impacted. today at the reservoir, runners were giddy in the rain. >> i think it's fantastic. makes me really sad when i see the reservoir low. this is good. >> reporter: this week's moisture will m

more than a dusting in the sierra. the snow is around 1800 feet, could if get down to around cameron park. some rain moving through, looks like it's hit or miss here. back over towards east pay, as well, and there's not a lot, just light rain, things look to be lightning up a little bit -- lightening up a little bit. 35n santa rosa, 45 in hayward. so some areas on the mild side, and others that are pretty cold, but you see some 30s here. two reports of 38 and 39. 40 in cooper tino. that's some pretty cold air. one cold system dropping down, and and a lot of moisture coming up from the west- southwest. we do have advisories from low snow levels as well. 21 in truckee. that system coming down from the northwest, will start to tap into a lot of this moisture and give us what looks to be steady rain as we go tuesday into wednesday. not a lot here, but then things pick up tuesday night into wednesday, and if if everything continues to march in as advertised, the weekend could be very wet. we'll see. they are painting a wet

of the sierra. we have a winter storm warning in effect. this remains in effect through 2 p.m. heavy snow gusty winds. we are looking at another couple of feet possible at the higher peaks and then couple of inches possible above 4500 feet today so travel delays will be likely. and we will see that snow off and on over the next few days. right now temperatures are mild throughout the bay area hovering in the upper 40s to low 50s. this is the first of three storms heading our way. storm number 1 right now out in the pacific, it will bring with it more heavy rain and high winds over the next couple of days. so scattered showers through today. next storm tonight overnight tonight through friday, lingering showers saturday. and then our third storm comes through on sunday. futurecast can time it out. again, scattered showers for much of the day. so keep the umbrella handy. it won't be a rainout. here we are at 11:00 tonight where you start to see that next front move through. heaviest rain overnight. we

that's more snow in the sierra. a snow pack, about 150% of average about, to get super sized as we head to the weekend. will travel support you getting there? right now it is very windy. we're add go up the rain totals. two to three inches of rain falling in. that's what we're still seeing tonight. we continue to see some localized flooding here and some localized flooding into marin county. so use caution as you head out on your morning commute. even though the heavier rain has moved on. still scattered showers across the north bay. a much different story than it was from 5:00 to 8:00. that's when the cold front moved through. heavy rain at times now in the form of snow toward the sierra. and here comes storm number two. the scattered clouds and showers after thursday's outlook. this storm will pack a lot of wind moving forward. so the check list for the next would storms. has the looks familiar, it is exactly what we've seen the last few hours. we'll see the second and third storms bringing wind gusts up to 50 mil

while we get heavy rain, snow is just dumping in the sierra. that will continue the next several days, even getting heavier this weekend is. i'll detail that and the timeline of when the heaviest rain comes in. more commute, on the roadways now, mike. how is it looking at the street level? >> looking better than yesterday. yesterday had almost no commuters. a smooth flow of traffic over here. looking at the north bay, flooding reported 101 and 37 and merit island. i want to show you the bigger view of the entire bay. wet roadways all over the bay. the bay bridge, backing up here. it looks like the metering lights have turned on. that is certainly different than yesterday. water on the lens here. san mateo bridge. we showed you prior to the toll plaza a couple seconds ago. winds calm. slick roadways. be careful. back to you. >> all right. we have been seeing the ponds picking up in spots. bob redell is thick in the morning commute. bob, good morning. >>> good morning to you, sam and laura. we have finally found the first weather bands of rain co
