i hope as many of you are able will stay in washington, d.c. in washington, d.c. to the balance of this week after your conference and join us on friday to celebrate the advent of a new administration. we are all working for the people, the president-elect and i are determined to forge strong partnerships between the federal government in the cities of this country. make. make no mistake about it, we both believe that you have some of the most important jobs in public service in the nation. whether you are mayor of a large metropolis or small town like my hometown of clubs, indiana. the fact is, each of you in this room who serve as mayors have one of the biggest impacts, your leadership has perhaps all of the greatest impacts on the quality of life for tens of millions of americans. i vice a tremendous respect for mayors and the unique role that you play. really, the importance of a mayoral office is a testament to america's exceptional system of constitutional government. whether we look around the world it's easy to see countries who run for their capital city

we said listen, if you're going to come to washington, d.c. and break the law we'll take you into custody. i think the metropolitan police department showed we can do that. i think they used excellent judgment in their decisions. our intention going into this event was to make zero arrests. it's unfortunate they forced our hands in this situation. >> hearing there from chief and dc mayor about the violence and the protests. they refer to them as a small group of people who have been initiating there action. one of the things i didn't hear though is if they expect -- if it's over. so have we seen the crowds disperse from where we have seen them today. i don't think we have an answer to that. they said what, 217 people were arrested. unfortunately six police officers injured. >> really some stunning news that came out of that about the kinds of things that some of these protesters crowbars and hammers. this small group of protesters came here with the intent to do some damage and to do some harm. that's the unfortunate thing because we know that

he moved permanently to washington. >> why don't most presidents stick around washington, d.c.? is it a matter of respect for the new president at the start of his administration, or are presidents just ready to go home? >> i think it's definitely partial respect for the new administration, but they want to go home. i think they want to get back to a normal life. there's nothing very normal about being president and i think they are glad to get home. all the presidents but nine had houses to go back to or farms in the early days, actually productive farms, and they want to get back to life as normal. and i think that's why they got out of town. jefferson stayed on awhile with madison, and different ones have stayed on, but most of them go. they get out of town. >> you mentioned president wilson. he's probably the most well-known president to remain in the district. why did he stay? what was different about him? >> well, one thing was he took a job of counsel with a prominent law firm. his health was such that he wasn't able to function. he went to the office several times, but h

in washington, d.c. senegal says its sent troops into gambia in order to force yahya jammeh to step down. it comes a few hours after the new president adama barrow was sworn in in senegal's capital dakar. barrow won the election but yahya jammeh has remained defiant. reporter: gambia's citizens did not get to witness one of the most democratic transitions in their country firsthand. inauguration in senegal on thursday. after the ceremony, president adama barrow tried to garner support from the country's armed forces in a standoff with longtime leader yahya jammeh. >> i command the chief of the staff, the high command, to demonstrate their loyalty to me as their commander in chief.
