what are you learning about whether kellogg is going to be acting or permanent? >> we're still trying to figure that out. this is moving pretty quickly tonight. you're right, we did have an understanding that jared kushner had kind of come in the last couple days and taken the lead on this and really started to think seriously about replacing general flynn. kushner probably has more of trump's ear and more trust than anybody else in the white house, and, you know, he stays sort of below, under the radar a little bit, but when it's time to do something big, when it's time to make a change, and we saw this during the trump campaign when it was time to change campaign managers, it was kushner who came and he was usually the impetus of doing that. general petraeus is going to be at the white house tomorrow. that stoked a lot of speculation. and two conflicting stations on your network talking about how flynn still has the full confidence of the president. and within the hour a statement from the press secretary saying, actually, we're still evaluating. that told you,

mcmaster and acting national security advisor keith kellogg. here with me now to discuss all of this cnn white house reporter steven colinson, patrick he willy and lynn sweet, washington bureau chef for the "chicago sun-times." good to see all of you. you just reported that senior administration officials are showing strong support among the nsc for john bolton to be the national security advisor given his knowledge of washington. his supporter are also billing him as an outsider. what are the other reasons that he's being favored. >> i think political appoint tees are in sync with john bolton to start with. he's been a controversial character in washington. he had to get a recess appointment to serve as george w. bush's u.n. ambassador but he is clearly preferred by some of the political staffers. although there's a great deal of affection for general kellogg and they would like to see him remain as chief of staff, bolton is someone that sort of fills the boxes for this administration in a number of ways. he's clearly an anti-establishment fig

and kellogg, keith kellogg, also a three off-star, as chief of staff for that important national security council, which is really not as well known to the general public about how large that staff can be, how expert they are on different regions of the world and different threats to the united states. and it will be mcmaster's role to sift through that, to help advise the president, to be in on all the important meetings. it is really a role that is close to the president. one where there's often a very close bond of trust and friendship that builds up between a president and a national security adviser. the president has a lot of latitude in making such a decision because there is no senate confirmation for this person. so, the abrupt exit of michael flynn, who was also a general, after his failure to be fully forthcoming with the vice president and others, that turbulent period for the white house, to a degree, is now over because we can now say that will is a new choice. the president's made a decision. he conducted his interviews. and now a figure who is not as well known outside mil

so, again, you know, kellogg would be just fine. what i think it would do is transfer more power back to cabinet secretary if didn't have a widely known major public servant. >> is it especially important just given how short flynn's tenure was, how controversial flynn's tenure was, lingering questions left by that, is it particularly important to this administration right now to put somebody in that position who has that sort of wide bipartisan respect? >> yeah, i think so. by the way, i think they got the time because general kellogg there's no question he knows how to bring all this stuff together. and i'm sure secretary mattis are comfortable with them. they don't want people turning them down in public either. but they've got to get out there and vet some of these guys or gals. you know, dr. condi rice was national security advisor that i had a lot of contact with during bush 43. that's the caliber of the person they need. and they're out there. and they will serve the american people and this president. >> all right. barry mcc

at any rate, back to kellogg. you remember that he was in charge of the presidential transition agency action team for defense. he has been with trump for a while. he's a guy who was commander of the 82nd airborne division, has a tremendous amount of military experience, a tremendous amount of national security experience and he is definitely someone who can take over the reins and is it possible that he gets a job? potentially he could get the jo job. he was announced as the chief of staff of the national security council. he was basically the number three there anyway. so to elevate him as national security advisor is something that's a natural. but it could be that maybe the president wants to bring in someone else. again, i go back to david petraeus who was seen frequently at trump tower and the president was trying to find a place for petraeus in the administration. the problem was that he already had general kelly. he already had general mattis and he had flynn as well-paid was he going to bring in yet anoth

keith kellogg retired. i knew him on the joint staff. he was one of the staff officers there. he retired in 2003. each after retirement he went the iraq and was part of the coalition provisional authority. all of these guys have quite a bit of operational experience. they are all very solid soldiers. they have degrees of smartness and degrees of charisma. but they have to put an organization together which is the nsc, that will be very difficult because there are all kinds of cultures and all kinds of egos in that organization that come from a variety of agencies across the government. that's a tough job, and it works 24/7/365. >> brooke -- >> as juf jeff pointed out those are just some of the names fleet floating go ahead. >> this is somewhat of a credibility test for the administration after the mess of the last couple of weeks. from the beginning when flynn was advising trump on the campaign there are there were a lot of questions about his background and his tweets and his beliefs. and this is really a chance for the white house to kind of turn thing around on this subject

in terms of a more operational national security council, i think keith kellogg, general kellogg brings a wealth of military experience. but we really don't know what the president wants out of the nsc. in fact the nsc director will have to do a bit of both, be the intellect on national security within the white house, but also be prepared at a moment's notice when a crisis arises to help organize the national security community, reaching out to state, cia and defense. so it really will come down to how the president wants this office to work. >> as a former member of trump's national security team, can you describe kind of the vetting process, having gotten to know donald trump? what will he be looking for as he interviews these candidates? >> well, being part of the transition team, we didn't really become involved in enter viewing people for that role. as you know, general flynn was one of the first people announced in terms of his appointment to the new trump administration, so it was a very different situation than state and defense that came much later. but in my sense of mr. trum
