this is actually emma stone's first oscar. mahershala ali became the first muslim to win an oscar. damien chazelle, the director of "la la land," it's his first oscar, and he's also the youngest director to ever win an oscar, and then there was viola davis, this was her first oscar and plenty of people are talking about her acceptance speech. it's trending actually on many social media sites because she touched a lot of people. i saw many people tweeting that they were actually in tears watching her speech. a very heart-felt speech about why she became an artist, and she says it's because this is a profession that celebrates what it means to live life. so, viola davis leaving a lasting impression on everyone with that speech that she gave this evening. >> and, danya, of course, we remember the sound engineer from "hacksaw ridge" who was nominated 21 times, his first win. >> finally broke the longest losing streak in oscar history. >> yes. kevin o'connell, big congratulations to him and, by the way, viola davis also won our vote for best dressed of the night. >> yeah, she looked ama

in recent times, it has been uncommon for a best actress oscar to go to someone for a best actress oscar to go to someone who's first language is not english. this could happen in the case of elle. i did not have to choose one side of her persona or the other. that is what makes her so worthwhile. natalie portman, who has won an oscar before, was nominated for her role as jackie kennedy. she plays a wave of the president in a film set in the minutes just after the assassination of her husband in dallas in 1963. loving centres on the end of the ban on interracial marriages. and finally, meryl streep, who gets a nomination for her role as the opera singer. if she wins a fourth academy awards, she will match the record. one of the strongest oscar contentions in the foreign film race may be the german picture toni erdmann. it's a father—daughter relationship drama, in which the father figure one often overlooked oscars category, at least by the inward looking american media, is that of best foreign language film. all five nominees this year are strong candidates. if cinema is, as the late

for two years it was oscars so white, and this year it was oscars so male. if you see the multiple people of all different shades of colours hitting the stage, you wouldn't have seen that five years ago. i'm not saying that five years ago. i'm not saying that we definitely wouldn't have seen it but it wouldn't have been trending and the time. you had viola davis and you had the actor from moonlight who took best supporting actor, so you have best supporting actor, so you have best supporting actor and best supporting actress, both people of colour, both winning, and that was terrific. the oscar had and that was terrific. the oscar had a huge investment on so many levels to get rid of that oscars so white andi to get rid of that oscars so white and i think they finally broke through on that. moonlight won, best picture, best adapted screenplay and best supporting actor. it was shot for less than $5 million, grossing $22 million at the box office and took the top prize at the golden globes and the spirit awards. in the 89 years of oscars, this hasn't happened

she has got an oscar. but her film does not have the best picture oscar and it was the most extraordinary and it was the most extraordinary and most bizarre moment, the strangest plot twists you have ever seen. the producers were on the stage and they were well into their speeches before it became apparent that something was wrong. there was a certain sense of a frisson that there might be something amiss to begin with because there was a big delay before the name was read out. nonetheless eventually it became clear that moonlight had won. one of the producers of la la land had the unenviable task of announcing this to the world and holding up the card that said moonlight. and eventually the producers of moonlight came on stage to accept their award. we have been speaking to the director, barry jenkins, tonight. he came down here. he won. at the end of the day, they won, and that was all that mattered to them for best picture. what an amazing evening. was it as simple as somebody handing the wrong envelope
