joining me now live from the white house is the president's senior policy adviser, steven miller, who was a key player in writing the original travel ban. steven, let's start with the breaking news. what's the white house reaction to that north korean ballistic missile test, and are you -- is the white house going to put that regime on notice as you did with iran? >> last night what you saw was the president of the united states sending a powerful and unmistakeable signal to north korea and to the entire world as he stood shoulder to shoulder with the prime minister of japan and declared our steadfast and unwavering support for that alliance. and the meaning of that symbolism will be lost on no one. chris: but you say it's an unmistakeable message. other than the fact that we're standing with japan, what's the message? >> the message is, is that we are going to reinforce and strengthen our vital alliances in the pacific region as part of our strategy to deter and prevent the increasing hostility that we've seen in recent years from the north korean regime. more broadly as you know, we

miller in the white house says it is an understatement you are in control, what they worry about is, that not everything is in control and there is such an effort to show how things are in control that there may be a blind spot at the white house of the things that naturally with any administration need to be fixed. for those people who are worried about that blind spot, about the, about the things that do need to be fixed what are your words to them? >> well, first of all, there you go again. you are talking about some people, those people, them, they, who are these people? >> dickerson: you have not -- >> well, let me ask you and put it this way -- >> no -- >> dickerson: conversations you have, with say speaker paul ryan and lots of other leaders on the hill. when they talk to you, do they express no concern that things at the white house are maybe a little ragged on certain issues? is it constant praise that you get from your allies on the hill? >> look, i think what we hear from people on the hill is the same thing i am telling you, that is media is obsessed with a lot of false,

miller saying that the u.s. is going to ramp up its capabilities. so you'll see a bit of a tougher approach. the administration is going to be faced with the question of what it's going to negotiate with north korea to try and ease those nuclear and missile threats or it's willing to take some action to curb it, anna. >> all right, elise labbot, and now the director of international affairs and on george w. bush's national security council. victor, good to have you with us, the entirety of the president's statement was just that the u.s. stands behind japan 100%, does it surprise you that he didn't directly send a message to north korea or even mention south korea in that statement? >> not really, i think that this was a desire not to overreact to this north korean missile test, they did not test the icbm. i would imagine that we will see more statements and actions to come over the week, from the administration. and so in that sense, i wasn't entirely surprised that the initial reaction was a bit understated. >

does steven miller or anybody in the white house for that matter have actual evidence to back up those claims? >> reporter: absolutely not, chris. it is absolutely not a fact there was widespread voter fraud in the 2016 presidential election. the evidence that the trump administration, whether it's been president trump himself or sean spicer is they keep citing academic studies that were conducted where even the authors of that study say that shouldn't be extrapolated saying 14% or millions of americans voted illegally. in one of the biggest misconceptions in whole story is what people refer to voters fraud or voter registration of people who have died or moved state to state. as we've seen, there are members in the trump family who have multiple voter registration, that is not the same thing as voter fraud. >> while the president was in mar-a-lago with the japanese prime minister shinzo abe, north korea tested the numbering near missile. give us a sense how the trump handled this as the white house. it's different than in the past. >> we're getting one cnn report that mar-a-lago that

so you have the president, sean spicer, you have steven miller all advancing a patent untruth, a lie, that there is widespread voter fraud that 3 million to 5 million illegal votes were cast in the 2016 election. not true. and at the same time, entirely ignoring the reality of voter suppression which is a real threat to our democracy. the deliberate effort to disenfranchise african-american and la ttino voters. and the fact that the administration is ignoring that has allowed the states to double down and begin to think about become increased voter suppression efforts on top of the efforts we were already challenging and actually prevailing over in federal courts. the good news, i do want to say this, it's important, that there are many more efforts in states to actually expand voting rights. so you see that there are in 11 states bills to restore voting to ex-offenders and other states efforts to expand early voting and to provide automatic registration. is this this is a battle in the states. but the president is overlaying it with this lie about voter fraud and this investigation t

let's face it, that's what steven miller is. he's infamous for really sort of making up nonsense arguments about immigrants in order to demonize them. i think it's a tragedy, it's a farce. and i think it would be very helpful if some republicans would start denouncing this. whistling through the graveyard on, that but it would be help r helpful with some of those voices sounded and explain to the president exactly why he is so offensive and why his policies are so offensive to so many americans. >> there are voting percentages that i have to ask you about. in 2012, mitt romney got 6% of the african-american vote to president obama's 93% of the african-american vote. in 2016, president trump did two points better than mitt romney. he got 8% of the african-american vote. now, that is anemic, but how is it possible that someone who speaks in such a way about the african-american community -- because i'm not going to say to the african-american community because all those segments we showed of the president talking about african-ame
