kelly o'donnell standing by there. it's busy at any time there, but this news must be rocking the place. >> reporter: well, what's so significant about this is that it is bipartisan, rin by richard burr, republican, north carolina, along with democratic partner mark warner. they agree with this, they write it together, stand by it. that's significant because of the timing. we saw new remarks by the president last night where he said wiretapping had a broader, more generalized meaning than the specific letter of the law, perhaps opening the door to an alternative way of trying to defend his remarks. it also comes before this briefing today where now there's a definitive result on the specific issue of wiretapping at trump tower before or since the election where this committee has the access to interview those in the intelligence community, to talk to anyone who would have had the authority to bring this about, to look at evidence behind the scenes. so much of their work is done in secret, but their reach is considerabl

i'll switch over to kelly o'donnell. we're expecting the house speaker to come out around 3:30. what are you sensing about whether this vote happens? >> reporter: in all cases we should live in the moment. we went through all the iterations of passing the obamacare and now seeing it today, you have to judge it minute by minute. there can be a momentum shift that can radically change the outcome. right now the votes aren't there. how can the president and the speaker and his team try to cobble this together? if you're looking to the more moderates, that might be that pathway kasie talked about. what is notable now is how a number of the key figures appear a bit entrenched. when you hear from the head of the freedom caucus today, that did not give an optimistic view. talked to other members who say there still might be a path. it was not a final deal. there's still a little room left. here is chairman mark meadows from earlier today giving that sort of in the moment scorecard of where things std. >> so, one of the things -- >> do or die but in comes down to you? >> well, i mean, o

kelly o'donnell, thank you for being the west in the business. former congressman charlie christ, a democrat, served as governor and attorney general. thank you for joining me today. let's go into your background as florida's attorney general and also former governor. talk about what you think of the forced resignations and one firing that is different for what we're witnessing from the department of justice. this has been a big story, especially with the attorney general from the southern division in new york having to be fired. i know that attorney general janet reno did the same thing in the clinton administration, but is this apples to apples? >> i don't think it's quite apples to apples. it may be apples to oranges. but it's not that unusual. as you mentioned, this has happened in the past where u.s. attorneys have been asked to resign when a new administration comes into office. they have that right, and in some ways, have that duty. what i think makes this different is particularly the situation in the southern district of new york. former

let's go to kelly o'donnell who's inside the white house. talk to me about how the white house is planning on following up with what was largely accepted to be a well-received speech? >> reporter: well, trying to give some room for those good reviews to sort of settle in and to try to maximize what they believe was a good night for the president, where he was able to lay out a vision that they think matches what many of his supporters want. and also believing there are elements in that that could reach across the aisle, could reach support among those who have not been sure about president trump so far. also giving room to do work behind the scenes. this kind of speech is never meant to be chock-full of specifics but he laid out policy ideas that will require a lot of difficult work in washington to accomplish. things like immigration, for example. so, by meeting with top congressional leaders from the republican party here today at the white house, a chance to sort of take in a breath, look at what can be done, talk about policy ideas, gaug

so, kelly o'donnell standing by at the white house. anything we're missing or you would add from what we just witnessed? >> reporter: well, brian, i think its also important to remember that devin nunes is new to this role as being the chair. he's also been out front in support of donald trump, a member of the transition team, and certainly a supporter of the president. he has raised so many questions that will now draw out others in the intelligence community to need to respond to them. so, far from putting this to bed, they've opened up new tributaries of this story and have given the president a bit of lift, however clouded it may be, that's something that is really remarkable. also noteworthy it was nunes standing alone, without the typical situation where the bipartisan ranking member would be side by side. brian? >> kelly o'donnell at the white house. let's speak further english on this. the effort at the white house is to find enough to vindicate what the president said on twitter that he was somehow, and he used the word wireta

elsewhere in the capitol, kelly o'donnell has been following this story all day as well. kelly, what are you hearing from your sources about what happened here? >> reporter: well, we're in the room where speaker ryan will hold the press conference. i bumped into him on the stairs heading over here, i'm not sure which one of us was running faster, but he said nothing about the specifics. only repeating, we're going to have a press conference, we'll have a press conference. so we expect an explanation from the speaker to give us sort of the unfolding, the behind-the-scenes of what happened here. i'm told by gop leadership aides that about 3:00 the speaker and the president had a conversation, and that is where this effort to repeal the health care law came to its end. kind of a moment of reck anything where they saw they don't have the votes, they don't have a political path forward, and it was best not to hold the vote and expose all of their members to the political vulnerabilities of having to vote yes or no. and all of the complications that could come from that. so, in

kelly o'donnell has more from the white house. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lewis. the new week after the big bust on capitol hill, failing to repeal obamacare as republicans had promised. now there are new questions about the relationship between president trump and house speaker ryan. sources tell me over the weekend, the president and the speaker spoke. they discussed going forward on a new agenda together. still that means that relationship, which is fairly new as a partnership will be tested again. the white house wants to move forward not on health care reform putting that aside and indeed saying it's time to look at tax cuts and tax reform as the next big agenda item. we're also waiting for new developments in the confirmation of supreme court nominee neil gorsuch. they are trying to find the votes. democrats are saying they want to filibuster. more on all of this will be developing this week but now back to you. lewis. >> kelly o'donnell from the white house lawn. thanks for that report. >> nation's larg

i want to bring in nbc's kelly o'donnell. kelly is at the white house for us and explain if we know if the white house has tangible proof to supply. >> reporter: i have asked that question and so far we're not getting a response about whether the trump administration, and it would be more the department of justice woul respond to this committee. we don't have a reason to believe they would not, but i've checked around, and i've gotten no updates on that. it's also sunday so perhaps the people with the most knowledge of this directly may not be as accessible. this is about a real attempt to sort of smoke out, is there something real in the president's charge that was so inflammatory and really, many people responded to the fact that he was accusing president obama after that transition and inauguration period there appeared to be a collegiality, at least, between trump and obama and that seems to have disintegrated. the president using twitter almost in a lashing out way to make this accusation. now there are, of course, recor

i want to go to capitol hill correspondent, kelly o'donnell. kelly, i realize so many things are moving. at this point, how is the vote count looking? >> reporter: speaking of moving, paul ryan just passed by the camera location a couple minutes ago saying i'm good, but didn't respond to where the numbers are. it's over 30 votes we have as no in the nbc tally. our team asking members, personally. last night, in the wee hours, talking to members coming out of the meeting, the republican conference meeting, i did not encounter any no's turning to yes. today will be a test. we have a tweet from president trump this morning poking the freedom caucus, the most conservative group on the issue of abortion, which, historically could be a motivating topic for conservatives saying the irony, the freedom caucus, pro-life, against planned parenthood, allo allows pp to continue. again, pp planned parenthood. the president is putting pressure on the most conservative wing that has been willing to blunt any pressure from leadership. it's a huge test today for

we just got the information within the last hour reporting to us, nbc's kelly o'donnell at the white house. kelly, what do we know right now? >> reporter: one update, president trump has left the white house this afternoon and he has ventured about a half hour outside the city to visit one of his golf clubs, white house officials have not told us the purpose of his visit there today. we may learn more as the day unfolds. certainly doesn't feel like day for golf, it's very chilly here. but back to the breaking news. last night at 20 minutes to midnight. officials now tell us there was a breach of the perimeter here. and as the audience is looking at the image of the white house it would be on the left side as you're looking at the screen and toward the back of the white house. we're told an individual with a back pack was able to get over the fence and to get some distance on to the grounds. the authorities say that there was no weapon or obvious hazard in the back pack or on that person. but that individual was arrested. they have not provided a name or any identity but tell us there

nbc's kelly o'donnell has more on what's next for the president. kelly. >> good afternoon, keir. the tweeted message from the president today included the phrase don't worry. that's how he is responding to the defeat on the health care law where republicans who expected to be able to repeal obama care fell flat on friday. members of their own house conference just would not support a bill, so now what do they do? well, the president wants to move on to things like tax reform. today in west virginia vice president mike pence also acknowledged the defeat and the disappointment on capitol hill. he had been a big part of trying to negotiate and sell the bill that went nowhere. now they want to turn on to other things. focussing on jobs, they say. focussing on tax reremember for. a big question that will be tough to answer for a while is can the white house push through an agenda on capitol hill? they have a republican majority, but clearly not republican agreement on some issues. did the defeat on health care cost them capital they need to use for the next big fight on capitol hill?

kelly o'donnell standing by there. kelly, this report from "the new york times" hit just before sean spicer and his regular daily briefing were set to begin in the white house there. what is the white house saying in response to what "the new york times" is reporting? >> reporter: very little. sean spicer would not confirm anything in that report, would not engage on it, not taking questions that relate to it, but as kasie just outlined and certainly congressman adam schiff also made this nexus between the timing of "the new york times" report and this letter inviting the intelligence top officials from the house and senate committees to view this material. so, clearly sean spicer, the spokesman for the president, knew this was coming. he was prepared for this. and did not want to take questions that would help us to understand if there is anything to the recording in terms of the white house being willing to confirm or refute elements of that story. one of the big questions comes down to not only white house staffers,

kelly o'donnell is standing by outside the white house for us. kelly, did we get that about right? >> reporter: yes, brian. most recently the president in an interview referred to president obama as nice personally but suggested that some of the people who supported him had been undermining the new trump administration. very treacherous ground for sean spicer to say something ahead of his own boss. all things related to barack obama seem to cause a great deal of anxiety here. when it comes to larger issues, its helpful to remember that when paul manafort was brought on during the trump campaign, that was at a time when there was a strong feeling within the republican party that they could mount a challenge to sort of topple his advantage at the convention. that was something that was alive and real at that early phase. paul man for the has a home inside trump tower. he's he's effectively a number of donald trump at the time. he was part of the nitty gritty of what happens at a convention so he had relevant experience. it waslso at a time when very few in the republican establishmen

kelly o'donnell joins us live from the white house. kelly, a key relationship to get anything done in washington, d.c., here, the speaker and the president and yet more details about how the relationship is evolving on sunday. >> we had seen the relationship become kind of a day to day partnership during the selling phase of trying to repeal obamacare. the speaker telling me he spoke with the president just about every day multiple times a day. we saw the president go to capitol hill to try to convince and persuade. then there was a tweet from the president of the united states early yesterday that could have gone by unnoticed really. he said watch judge janine on fox news at 9:00 p.m. that was about 10:00 in the morning or so. when when 9:00 p.m. came around, judge jeanine on fox news gave a very detailed argument why she thinks the speaker of the house should resign. it was his fault for not being able to bring together a vote to support the president to, in fact, deliver him a defeat in the first 100 days. she went on to say it was
