. >> for more now we want to go to ktvu's frank mallicoat. he has been talking with drivers caught up in this traffic jam. >> reporter: thank you julie. we are at ground zero. this is san pan loss, the last exit on highway 80 eastbound. the shooting actually took place right up that hill so it's only about 50 yards away. so these people, aussie them get off, are are a little frustrated. some are very vocal, some are very loud, a few people honking their horns. i would imagine a lot of people relieved after beg stuck on a highway for an awful long time. a lot of folks are asking us. they didn't tune into the radio or check their phone. they want to know what happened. we've been filling them in a little bit. this all happened a little after 3:30, right in the height of the commute when it was just starting to rev up. on a good day on highway 80, it's not all that good. so you throw in two helicopters landing on the freeway and a shooting as you might imagine, it's been very difficult. we talked to a few of the drivers and commuters as they got

is now the eighth person to die in a freeway shooting since the fall and the statistics obtained by ktvu fox news are startling. there have been more 80 shootings in the bay area during that time period. the most shootings and deaths happened in contra costa county, 35 in total. california highway patrol has said that most of the car to car shootings are targeted incidents involving gangs and the public should not be worried. >> california highway patrol wants to reassure the public that most of the danger from the highways are from traffic collisions. >> reporter: that does not sit well with mayors of these cities. >> innocent lives are being lost, we want to minimize the danger to all of our residents. >> when you drive on the freeways in the bay area, the public is not safe. >> reporter: for almost a year, city officials and the contra costa da have asked the city to fund cameras to catch the shooters. >> we have funding from local police departments but to my knowledge, no funding from et state. >> reporter: smarl cities said they do not have the funds. >>> the state is responsible f
