we will bring in alex savidge with an update from vacaville. al election. >> reporter: good morning. this guy hadn't been spotted since about yesterday afternoon. he went up into a drainage pipe. he was missing since then. rescuers trying to find him. then just about 45 minutes ago he popped out of the drainage pipe and started swimming up this creek here next to that drainage pipe. this is the creek that you're looking at here. if we push down there, you may be able to see -- we have some animal control officers there. way down there, trying to keep up with this sea lion. he has been nicknamed mr. leisure because the canal and the drainage pipe he was found in is off of leisure town road. he is swimming at a good slip but swimming in the right direction. that's the good news. the delta is in that direction. so maybe he's got a sense now and he is sort of heading home. but it was a pretty dramatic scene a short time ago. i'll show you what happened just after 9:00 this morning. all eyes were on the drainage pipe that is just underneath leisure

animal experts in vacaville will try again, pam, to rescue that sea lion stuck in a canal. >> right. ktvu alex savage at the scene with more on what's being done to get him back out where he belongs. >>reporter: good morning, this complicated rescue operation will resume later this morning. members of the marin mammal center will return to this area to help this adult male sea lion that became stranded in this canal. he's he's -- he's out of view. he drew a crowd of onlookers yesterday. a very unusual spot for a sea lion to be found so far from the coast. animal control officers were called out here yesterday morning after someone passing by spotted him in a concrete spillway here. now, rescuers worked throughout the day using air horns trying to help this animal. experts suspect the sea lion sam up the san francisco river and took wrong turns in the water waves and wound up stranded in this spot. >> sometimes they follow aquaducks or follow rivers that empty out into the ocean and for whatever reason they don't figure out how to turn themselves around. >> this sea lions appears to b

( mark ) happening now in vacaville. a sea lion named "mr.leisure" is making his way out of a canal and back toward the sacramento river. marine mammal experts were working to rescue the young sea lion from the canal... but say, he may free himself. the male sea lion was first spotted swimming near the irrigation canal tuesday morning. crews believe he traveled up the sacramento river, took a wrong turn and followed a series of waterways to reach the canal. they are now monitoring the sea lion's progress. officials say "mr leisure" is in good health, and appears to be enjoying his adventure. a local 14 year old boy helped with the naming... he said he saw the sea lion enjoying a leisurely stroll down the creek...stopping to sun bathe at times. the sea lion was also found near leisure town road.
