. >>> well, things are slowly but surely changing for the best in camden as far as crime is concerned. according to police violent crime is down in the city and much of that is being attributed to a new relationship between the cops and the community. "action news" new jersey correspondent nora muchanic has that story from camden tonight. >> drop the knife. >> reporter: this is a video of camden county police responding to a call of a deranged man swinging a knife and ignoring officers' commands put it down. in some places police might have fired on the suspect to disarm him but instead, at least a dozen officers surrounded the man and walked with him down broadway until he finally dropped the knife and was cuffed. cops call it dee escalation. >> they have pride in saving lives in a different way without having to take a life to save a life. it's just a different culture in the police department. >> reporter: the video was from 2015 but reflects how camden police are trained note they don't have to resolve a critical incident instantly as long as they and the public are safe it's okay

it's been four years since the camden city police department was disbanded and the camden county police department took over. that meant a change in philosophy and training away from the use of force whenever possible. in the video you're about to see illustrates how these days the last thing cops in camden want to do is pull a gun. >> drop the knife. >> reporter: among the millions of videos posted on youtube is this one from the camden county police department. it shows in detail a deranged man swinging a knife and ignoring officers' to put it down. instead of shooting the suspect a dozen officers surround the man and walk several blocks with him until he finally drops the knife and is subdued. >> the core of everything that we do from a training perspective is based upon the sanctity of life and putting a value on someone's life separate from the behavior they're exhibiting. >> reporter: the incident happened in 2015 but reflects the change in training and fill fees for officers. there are more out on the street and critical incidents like this don't have to be resolved immediately.

sara bloomquist is live outside of the camden county courthouse. sara opening statements and the beginning of testimony what did you learn today. >> reporter: jim only a few witnesses were called today following the opening statements. the most interesting testimony came from brendon creato's mother that the defendant david creato suggested that his son was drawn to the woods by spirits where his body was found. he sat motionless as the trial got underway in camden county court. they toll the case that was carefully instructed to make his client look guilty but he is not. >> he goes by dj david jr. and the accused of -- is the most heinous thing a person can be accused of. but he is innocent. >> jurors heard creato's 911 call when he told police he woke up and found his son missing. hours later brendon was found partially submerged in a creek more than a half mile from his father's apartment. and christine shaw refuted the idea that he walked there on his own the boy's socks were clean and he feared the dark. >> if there is one thing -- brendon lov

it's gone now but check out the jam we have coming out of the toll plaza in camden. up and over on the bridge in toward eighth and vine coming into philadelphia, stay up on the betsy ross or down on the walt whitman. walt whitman into new jersey is very busy because of an earlier crash on 42 southbound. at the ben franklin 5 miles an hour. lots of speeds in the teens on the schuylkill and on 95 it's even worse, just 9 miles per hour northbound because of an accident in the northbound lanes between cottman and if academy. that crash taking out the two left lanes. this actually is an accident, though, in delaware county that we're watching. northbound side of 95 right by the exit for 452. you can see the emergency crews on the scene and even though it's off to the side, it's causing northbound slowing and a southbound gaper delay. jammed in both directions on 95 in delaware county. on 95 in delaware, earlier crash southbound past 202 has cleared but there is one on 202 itself. grab the ipad do the commuter report on this friday afternoon. had a crash in cherry hill alo

camden county along the new jersey turnpike, behind it there is light rain but that will soon shut off as it ends in the state of delaware and east in new jersey, aespecially long the shore. the garden state parkway very heavy rain right now and we have a cylinder on the tip of long beach island with rotation possibly with the storm there's. but they are off the coast so even if there is rotation or winds with that storm it would be open the open waters at this point. we are also dealing with street flooding, philadelphia and south into southern new jersey. and also into ocean county. we had one for the lehigh valley that has expired but into the evening please watch some of that extra water on the roadway and severe thunderstorm watch until 5:00 and not much in the way of severe weather and watch the ponding on the roadways and streaks and streams are running very high so avoid them. tell the kids if they head out

he joins us live from the camden county courthouse where the prosecution and defense laid out their case, cleve? report report good evening, nicole and jessica. well, they have certainly pointed toward david dj creato as having the opportunity and possibly a reason to kill his son, but is there proof that he did it? we heard testimony from first responders as well as victim's mother as the prosecution laid out the case and what they believe happened. now, dj creato from haddon township, made a call to 911 back in october 2015 reporting his three-year old son brendan was missing. several months later dj was charged with the murder of brendan, k-9 track the boy's lifeless body to wooded area along cooper river a mile from the dj's apartment. prosecutors say it is unlikely that the little boy wand their far through the dark, and, socks were cleaned. several medical examiners ruled brendan's death an homicide but never an explanation instead of signs for lack of oxygen to his brain. now, thinks dj's ex-girlfriend and brendan's mother. she has never been named a suspect but at one point she w

an apartment building goes up in flames in pennsauken, camden county. we're getting new information. a firefighter is injured in the battle to get the fire under control. matt delucia live at the scene. i know you talked to the fire chief. what do you know? >> reporter: what we know is that one firefighter was taken to the hospital. fortunately no other injuries including to the folks inside this house at the time. what i can tell you, there was a lot of smoke -- you might have noticed when we saw you at the top of the hour. smoke has dissipated, so firefighters are getting a handle on this. we moved to the back of the home on zimmerman avenue, around the delaware river. this started at 2:30 this morning and got intense very fast. look at the video when we arrived on scene. heavy flames in the back of the house. there was trouble early on with a fire hydrant, getting that to work. that complicated things a little bit. the good news is, as i mentioned, everyone inside made it out safely. there were two families with children inside. they got out. i'm tol

matt delucia is live in camden. bring us up to speed on this case. >> reporter: the trial date had been delayed several times. as you mentioned, that jury selection is expected to begin today. the next step in this process. a year and a half following the death of this 3-year-old boy. over the weekend, a memorial that had been set up over the past year and a half for brandon creato was removed. this the spot where he was found dead in october of 2015. the candles and stuffed animals were taken away because the jury will be expected to make a trip to the site at a wooded area near the cooper river at some point during the trial. prosecutors say it was the boy's dad, 23-year-old david creato jr., who killed the boy because he was hindering a relationship with his teenage girlfriend. creato has pleaded not guilty to murder and child endangerment charges. he says the boy wandered away on his own. prosecutors, though, say the boy suffered from homicidal violence. jury selection is expected to begin today. we'll keep you
