our megan fitzgerald joins us live from the scene. what are they searching for out there now? >> reporter: they tell us they were searching for possible criminal activity but they didn't find anything. they tell us this all started last night when they saw two teens they thought they were smoking marijuana, they went to approach them. those teens took off into homes run park just behind us here. they looked for those teens, didn't find them, they returned back to the scene this morning. it was a startling off for school. k-9 officers walking through the park. police finished their search of the area just before the school day ended. investigators say nothing was found but they're on a heightened sense of awareness. it was just last month that the officers found the remains of two people less than a mile away. now the principal did send home a letter to parents letting them know that police were searching the area but she ensured them that it had nothing to do with the middle school. back to you. >> thanks so much. a quick look now at some of the day's other top stories. the tr

news 4's megan fitzgerald spoke to the victim's family tonight. >> reporter: her family says she would go walking around this neighborhood all the time every day. today was no different. when she didn't return home for hours they got worried and started calling her cell phone. we spoke with her daughter who said i picked up and said maria was gone. >> the police answered the phone and they said that there was an accident. i said please not my mother. >> reporter: maria came to live with her family 20 years ago from elsalvador. she was proud to live in america but her pride and joy was her family. >> best mother. >> reporter: maria was less than a mile from her home and in a cross walk here at lee jackson memorial highway. fairfax county police say 31-year-old keenan slammed into maria and hitting her a second time before driving off. we spoke with a witness who didn't want to go on camera. >> i heard some crazy noise and i looked up and i saw a woman just lying on route 50 >> reporter: hours later investigators were called to this strip mall. a woman said she was assaulted and robbed.

megan fitzgerald talked to neighbors and she's on the scene now with more. community say they're scared. they tell us there's a lot of kids that play around here and they're always at this playground behind me. parents never thought twice about it until sundays. it was during the evening on easter sunday when police say geda was watching kids play on a playground steps away from his apartment. investigators say first he exposed himself to children playing outside. not long after, they say he tried to lure two boys just 8 and 9 years old to his apartment by offering them food and drinks. investigators say he grabbed their wrists but the boys managed to break-free and run for help. she lives in the complex and took these pictures of geeda moments after he was arrested. >> it's sad that these kids can't play because of what's going on in the back of our yards. >> reporter: she's worried about the safety of her kids and others in the neighborhood and hopes that geeda never returns. >> yes, i'm concerned because i don't want him back around here
