>> reporter: good morning to you, chris and sam. we reached out to the public works department and found four counties saw significant increase in the amount of tax money spent to fix potholes caused by recent winter rains. keep in mind, this does not include money by city or caltrans, just the county. here in contra costa county, they spent around $124,000 fixing potholes in the first quarter of this year. that's close to 33% increase from the same period last year. next door alameda county saw the greatest increase in spending. they spent close to $144,000 in q1. that's up more than 50% over last year. san francisco city and county public works spent the most amount of money, cost almost $760,000 to fix over 10,000 potholes this past winter. that's about a 35% increase in spending over the same period last year, and you look in santa clara and the south bay, their county roads and airport department, this q1 they spent close to $168,000, that's about a 23% increase over last year. san mateo county public works department tells us
