there's been some challenges in getting senator schumer to interact with the white house. i've had no problems with white house. [inaudible] look, tax reform is a big subject. lots of moving parts. i can tell you my preference is that we treat businesses of all types similarly. most american businesses are not corporations. their escorts or llcs. were still discussing the way forward on that. it's pretty clear that will have to use a reconciliation vehicle because today's democratic party is very different than the democratic party of the 80s which was actually interested in progrowth tax reform. for example, bill bradley was the leader of the democrats and happening to facilitate the conference of tax reform in the late '80s. today's democratic party seem to be preoccupied with wealth transfer from those who had done well to those who have done less well. no matter how you feel about that, that's unrelated to having eight set up tax laws that promote growth and as others were saying here, were in a slog here. we haven't had a single year with 3% growth rate in eight years

senator schumer, welcome back to "meet the press." >> good morning. hi, mitch. >> let me say this. let me start this way. you expressed regret earlier this year for the rule changes made on judges in 2013. why did you go along with it if you regret doing it? >> well, let's look at the history. our republican colleagues had been holding back on just about all of so many lower court judges including very important d.c. circuit. i went to lamar alexander, one of my dear friends in senate, and i said, if you keep holding back on scores and scores of judges, my side will want to change the rules. go to mitch and tell us to have votes on a few of those, many of whom had gotten bipartisan support. the answer was no and we changed the rules. but the one thing that stands out here, we did not change it for supreme court for one very important reason. and that is on the most important of decisions, 60 votes is called for. that's why you get a mainstream, that's how you get a mainstream justice. just about every -- mitch calls it a filibuster. we call it the 60 votes standard. most americans

so, i sat down with chuck schumer, the minority leader in the senate, earlier today. he was somebody who, you know, there was a line of thinking that went, look, these are both new york politicians, they understand each other, they kind of operated in the same tabloid media sphere for a long time, maybe they will be able to get something done together and they do talk, but i asked senator schumer how president trump was doing in negotiating with congress and what those conversations were like. here's what he said. >> he's friendly, but he's not -- every time he's called me, it has not been on major summ subject. when i switch the subject to chi china, he listens and moves on to something else. i told him about infrastructure. a $1 trillion infrastructure bill. we haven't heard a real peep out of the white house. i don't know if it's lack of interest, but the things he gets involved in thus far, he has just -- >> reporter: it's kind of an interesting ining twist on a l reporting on the white house has kind of shown that president trump has been a little bit all over th

>> no, steve, i think it will be the chuck schumer shutdown. senator schumer promised a shutdown a month ago if the border wall funding was there and it takes 60 votes in the senate to pass it. ted cruz got tagged with the shutdown in 2013. i think chuck schumer gets tagged with it in 2017 and the big difference is the white house decides what's essential. the white house decides what gets shut down. not going to be the washington monument by president obama did, not going to be mt. rushmore like president obama did. you're going to see a group of bureaucrats go home and not get paid when they get coming back. so i think there's an incentive for chuck schumer to drop his shutdown threat because it isn't that -- manhattan beltway media is convinced trump's going to get blamed for the shutdown. i don't think so in trump land. they're going to blame chuck schumer. >> karine, big picture question, 100 day, symbolic milestone, i wonder from democrats' stand poibt, point, do can you think there's a lesson, do you think they look back at the election

two weeks ago schumer and nancy pelosi were drawing that line. both sides seem to have come off of that sticking point that leaves us with a cost payment sharing issue, has not been finalized the way that the law has. it is one of those issues that looks like we are getting resolution, still the other issues hanging out there. >> with regard to the negotiations, who is at the table, who are the key people you are watching? he said president trump and his team were not particularly help offering the wall demand late last week. now that trump is out it is the top members, the top roof a look in and talk democrat on the appropriations committee in the ones that are most involved in writing the deal but the leadership also as well. >> the funding of the wall issue is a big development, there had been talk yesterday, lawmakers trying to punch, delay it for another week to give congress time, the house returning and the senate yesterday from a more time to negotiate. how likely is that now question mark >> i do not rule that out. verbiage thathe the le
