abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson is live at the scene with what's happening now. >> reporter: matt, officers meticulously processed the alley and field beyond it all morning long. this is where freemont police said two officers shot and killed a man overnight. evidence markers document details of what happened in the alley last night. neighbors heard activity firsthand. >> we heard two pop shots, bam, bam, and that was it. >> reporter: the confrontation began outside this 7-11. the clerk said he bought cigarettes, cig gars, and beer. an officer was flagged down by someone who reported that a person had a gun in the parking lot. the officer called for backup at 11:37 p.m. his customer ran across the street and threw the shopping center. police followed. the swat team arrived, a helicopter hovered overhead. a drone scanned the scene. neighbor louis hernandez said they asked the suspect to surrender for 15 minutes. >> they said, everything will be okay, everything will be okay, just come out, but he would not. >> reporter: the police have not said why, but two officers eventually fired

abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson live for us in mountain view. hey, tiffany. is. >> that's right, natasha, if you want to be among the very first passengers you'll have to move south to phoenix. google's self-driving car company called waymo is accepting applications from passengers who live in the phoenix area. that begins today. they want several hundred passengers to test the expanded fleet of chrysler pacifica minivans. early riders will get free rides and give feedback about the passenger experience. waymo will have a test driver in the vehicle during this trial. however the long-term goal is to provide a fully self--driving car that needs no human intervention. currently california does not allow passengers in self-driving vehicles but that could change soon. this morning the dmv is holding a public hearing in sacramento to discuss proposed regulations for testing and public use of driverless vehicles. official rules could be in place by the end of the year. google has competition. so far 30 companies have filed for test driving of the self-driving vehic

tiffany wilson is live for us in san jose. tiffany. >> reporter: the suv was driving down jackson avenue just past the regional medical center when it left the road and slammed into this tree before careening into the side of this medical office building. you can see the damage. now if you take a look at the video you can see that suv when it was lodged into the side of the building. san jose police and fire both responding but by the time they got here the driver had already taken off. in the video you can see there's water that was spilling out of the building and the fire department had to turn off the building's water, and since we arrived a building engineer has been on the site inis that correcting structural integrity, and at this point it seems the sa build something safe to enter, but the water is still off. at this point when we spoke to a building representative, they do believe they will be able to open the building for business as usual later today. live in san jose, tiffany wilson, abc7 news. >> thank you, tiffan

tiffany wilson is live for us in the mission district. >> reporter: despite the misty morning more than 100 people have gathered here for the annual painting of this fire hydrant known as the little giant. this fire hydrant is credited with helping save the mission district from the great fire that spread after the earthquake hit. the fire chief sprayed it first and then family members of am so of the survivors of the earthquake. now, that 7.8 magnitude quake hit at 5:12 in the morning on this day 111 years ago. more than 100 people gathered to remember that moment this morning. historians believe more than 3,000 people died in the earthquake and resulting fires. officials say it is important to celebrate the city's resillance and to remind people how necessary it is to prepare because we do not know when the next quake could hit. >> you can see different people are taking turns spraying the fire hydrant gold and this will continue on the rest of the morning. we are live in san >> thank you. >>> bay area beaches could become smoke free if a local lawmaker has his way. >>> immigration ar

tiffany wilson is live near the scene. tiffany? >> reporter: we moved locations so you could better see what happened. this alley right behind the walgreen's off of fremont boulevard is where the officer-involved shooting took place but the confrontation began over at the a police officer requested backup because somebody in a car had a gun and when fremont police arrived a man from that car started running. we don't have details but police say two officers then fired at the man, and he was shot and killed. no officers were injured. initially a helicopter and s.w.a.t. team were called in because it was so dark and officers were not sure where the suspect was. >> the man who was fleeing, did he fire at the officers? >> that's still to be determined. we are still in the preliminary stages of the investigation. >> the other people in the suspect's car have been taken in for questioning and police suspect the shopping center and the 7-eleven will both be closed for several more hours. tiffany wilson, abc7 news. >>> good morning to ever

. >> tiffany wilson live for us in san jose. tiffany. >> reporter: it's a good thing this accident happened overnight because nobody was inside of the building when the car veered off of jackson avenue and slammed into the tree completely flattening it and ended up in the side of the medical office building. can you see the damage there. if you take a look at the video can you see the suv as it is lodged into the side of the building. now the video also shows water streaming out of the building. the fire department had to turn off the water supply to the building to stop that water. now when police and fire arrived here on the scene they say the driver had already taken off, so they are not sure where that driver is this morning. as i said, again, nobody was in the building so no injuries to report. there's been a building engineer out here for the past several hours inspecting the damage. you can see the caution tape on the inside of the building but i spoke with the representative for the regional medical hospital owner and th

abc7 news reporter tiffany wilson is live near the scene. >> reporter: there are two scenes they are investigating. this officer involved shooting started with a regional bay parks officer and a car full of people at this 7-eleven behind me. the officer requested backup because somebody in the car had a gun and witnesses say a man from the car ran across the street into an alley behind the shopping center. now we don't have -- >> this is a public safety issue. there is nobody out standing and there are no issues for public safety at this point. >> reporter: you did hear the good news, no issues for public safety because that suspect that ran across the street was interacted with two fremont police officers and police say they shot and killed that man. initially they were not sure where he was located so a helicopter and s.w.a.t. team was called out and they did locate the body and they are waiting to see if they recovered a gun and if that suspect fired at officers and the people in the car have all been taken in for questioning. abc7 news. >>> new threats of retaliations on the u.s.
