i grew up here in atlanta. i live in vermont now. but i come back here very frequently to see my mother who is right here. and my father who is very much involved in my research for this book. he read most of the manuscript and who died last year at the age of 99 1/2. i want to dedicate this whole talk to him and he was a wonderful, wonderful kind and generous man. i dedicate the book to him and my mother and to my african-american maid. i will be talking about her. maybe i should talk about her now. i don't really have this plan in particular as to what i am going to say in what order but i promise it will be interesting. when i decided i would write a book about atlanta, which i have not lived in for decades! i thought that number one, it was, it took a lot to decide is going to do this. not many have written about atlanta since the olympics was held here in 1996. two really good books. -- by gary pomerantz and atlanta rising by frederick allen. but it is a huge amount that has happened in that time. when i named it city on the ver

the study also found the air in atlanta is among the worst in the country. manuel bojorquez is there. >> reporter: even on days when he can play outside, four-year-old reco lovett is never far from his inhaler. at age two he was diagnosed with asthma so severe, it sent him to the hospital nine times. marie lovett is his mother. >> he'll say, "i want to go outside." i'm like, "no, you have to stay say, "you'll start coughing." he knows what that means. >> reporter: that's because in cities like atlanta air quality puts them at risk, according to a new harvard study. researchers looked at 60 million senior citizens and found their long-term exposure to certain air pollutants increased the risk of premature death. those especially at risk, african americans and low-income communities. atlanta has one of the highest levels of air pollutants because of congestion. it's land-locked geography and heat. los angeles and parts of the nation's coal country are also particularly bad. lovett worries about the potential long-term impacts on reco's health. >> the most impo

the northern part of fulton county which contains atlanta but the atlanta is south of the district. cobb county and dekalb county, three counties make up this district. why the karen handel is the winner, number one, start with the blue. jon ossoff did what he needed to do in decal can be county. he needed to run it up, 5-42 at the current vote count. that's what he needed to do. here is the giant problem for jon ossoff. starting here in cobb county. this number, this is the number democrats will look at. both pares in this race said for jon ossoff to win this race tonight, he needed to to be around 43% in the most republican area of the district. he's below 40%. that right there is game over. then move over here, the most populous part of the district is fulton county. jon ossoff again is below not only below 50% but to win the district he had to be about 43% or so in cobb county and had to keep fulton county where most of the vote ares are in the district. he had to keep it closer. 51-49. 53-47, karen handel wins this district. let's get back to what david was just talking about.

the suburbs, just like this atlanta district. so if the democrat can win this suburban atlanta district that has been red for so long, it's going to encourage democrats in places like this. it will help the party with candidate recruitment, for example. so as you look at 2018, people look at the results in atlanta, study that district and try to find places across the country with competitive races, as you get to those things. and anderson, one more before i flip it back. i want to show you this. this may be the only time i get to do this. there's also a special election in south carolina. in atlanta, it's tom price, the health and human services secretary. mick mulvaney, the budget director for the trump administration, his district is on the ballot tonight. at this moment, the democrat sleis leading. if we end the night tonight, i'll buy you whatever you want. early vote, a little bit of a lead there. two races to watch, south carolina, georgia. >> all right. john king, thanks very much. we're going to check back in with john t

republicans saw this race in georgia's 6th district in the northern suburbs of atlanta as a must win and they were able to do it by a margin of just 13,000 votes in the end. for karen handel to keep a seat that's been held by a republican for more than 50 years red, she now becomes the first woman elected by the state of georgia into congress. there was so much talk in the leadup to this race about it being a referendum on president trump and it became the most expensive race in the history of the house of representatives because so many folks from all around the country were sending their money to democratic candidate jon ossoff because they don't like what's going on in washington. they wanted this race to be able to make a statement. but the conservatives in this state galvanized behind karen handel. they didn't want their historically conservative district to become a trophy for democrats to carry into the 2018 midterm elections and wanted to defend their ground. a lot of jabs were taken over the course of this campaign. tonight, a tone of measured civility from both candidates.

attorneys together in atlanta in the '90s. when you look at the possibilities who were raised as fbi directors, john cornyn, the republican senator from texas -- he's right there. coincidence! and joe lieberman, the sort of democratic senator from connecticut. christopher wray is a much less political choice, and i think many people in the senate will find that a relief barring any surprising disclosures in the vetting process. it seems like he's very likely to be confirmed. he was head of the criminal division in the george w. bush administration and the justice department. that's a job that is a highly respected job, but not an especially political job. so i think that's something that this choice is likely to be very popular on both sides. >> we're looking at the hearing room right now for the senate intelligence committee and there's marco rubio right there and we were discussing him.
