jennifer griffin, let's get the read of that. what is going on here? >> neil, it's a very interesting development. remember, south korea has a new leader and they ran on a populous position that if the u.s. built up their anti-missile batteries, which are to protect the u.s. force there's and the koreans, the south koreans are concerned that that might be provocative to north korea. since south korea is so close to the dmz and the capital of south korea is so close to the dmz, there's -- with this new leadership in south korea, there is concern that the thad missile system, which is designed to stop any incoming north korea missiles, that it could be seen as provocative and they're worried about their northern neighbor, kim jong-un at this moment in time. the pentagon would like to have six missiles as part of that thad battery. they only made two of them operational. they were hoping to get the other four in place in order to have a solid system to defend seoul as well as the u.s. troops there. we had just heard in the last week from the assistant sec

jennifer griffin with the news live at the pentagon. jennifer? >> shepard, secretary mattis is keeping his cards close and did not announce any u.s. troop increases in brussels despite new pledges made by some nato nations to send up to 3,000 more troops to afghanistan. that would be 15 nato nations would need to send about 200 troops per country to make up that difference. the pentagon wanted to hear from nato nations about their contributions first. recall that in february, the top u.s. commander in afghanistan wanted a few thousand more troops both from the united states and from nato. secretary mattis is weighing a decision to send between 3 to 5,000 more troops. mattis said mistakes were made under the past administration. >> may have pulled our troops out to rapidly, reduced the numbers too rapidly. the difference today is that the afghan army is actually able to carry the fight. they've been carrying the fight for some time now. so there's always new ideas you can come up with that is -- there's new opportunities and certainly the politica

jennifer griffin is at the pentagon for us. jennifer? >> shepard, one thing we know, otto warmbier was not singing karaoke with kim jong-un. sean spicer said there's no mystery about how otto warmbier died. president trump has called it a disgrace. it's the first time however that we have heard north korea address the death of the uva students, otto warmbier. officials say that he was tortured in prison for taking a propaganda poster from his hotel. the north korean news agency said they provided the young american medical care and treatment with all sincerity on a humanitarian basis and denied torturing him. the fact that warmbier died suddenly in less than a week after his return to the u.s. in his normal state of health indicators is a mystery to us. to make it clear, we're the biggist victim of this incidents. hundreds of mourners celebrated the life of this college student turning out to say their farewell in his hometown of wyoming, ohio, near cincinnati thursday. ohio senator rob portman had this to say. >> north korea needs to be

jennifer griffin is live at the pentagon. jennifer, to you. >> shepard, it appeared the assad regime got the message. that's the word from secretary mattis. he thinks president bashar al-assad took president trump's threats seriously. u.s. officials say the white house issued their warning after they saw new activity in an aircraft hanger near homes. senior pentagon officials say they said a syrian mig fighter jet parked to a hanger that stored chemical agents. this is the same base that assad used in northern syria to kill women and children in april. officials are not being more specific citing the sensitivity of the intelligence, the new intelligence. the u.s. military struck the base with 59 tomahawk cruise missiles in early april. a pentagon spokesman said a short time ago, this hanger was partially damaged in the cruise missile strike. since late may, there's been six attacks by the u.s. against the assad regime, this month, the u.s. shot down two iranian drones, one which fired on u.s. forces in southern syria. mattis

jennifer griffin is at the pentagon. >> the head of the marine corps, visited the helmand province items we had. seems that they are looking to send rates back to helmand province after pulling out more than two years ago. officials say the new strategy in afghanistan will look like the current fight against isis and iraq and syria. to call in air strikes and embed them with local fighters. this new plan carries risks. earlier this month, three soldiers were killed by an afghan soldier and what the military calls and insider attack. seven other american soldiers were shot and wounded in a similar incident a week later. defense secretary jim mattis said he will present a new plan in the region. feel what specifics have you learned about this new plan for afghanistan? >> it would be a fundamental change from the obama administration policy. offered this assessment. >> we are not winning in afghanistan right now. we will correct this as soon as possible. >> in february, the top u.s. commander in afghanistan told congress, he needed a few thousand more troops after then, president obama offe

jennifer griffin is live in washington with more on that part of the story and the growing isis threat there. >> reporter: i think it's important to keep in mind as we look at what appears to be an apparent terrorist attack at this hotel complex outside the airport. may 23rd the president of the philippines declared martial law in the southern islands where islamists have been fighting a separatist battle for the last 50 years. he declared marshal law in may. he tried to get the guy who declared himself the head of isis in the area. during that botched raid the philippine military tried to capture the leader, they failed to do so. as a result there are 500 isis fighters, many foreigners from yemen, chechnya, stock piled weapons in a town in the area. so for the last week there has been an on going battle. it came to a head yesterday. we understand that eight foreign fighters affiliated with isis were killed in that area but clearly the philippine president has been trying to take on the isis strong hold in that area and it has come to a head. i would not be surprised to find out someho
