evan perez is still with us as well. evan, you're getting more information? >> our shimonreporter says adding to the confusion there in barcelona, that local investigators believe there was a getaway vehicle that the suspects may have been trying to reach and that perhaps might explain a little of the confusion as to whether or not there was one van or whether there are two vehicles. we heard from one of the eyewitnesses that we spoke earlier there was a search going on of a second vehicle. so that may explain what shimon prokupecz is hearing from a u.s. official. again, this u.s. official is relaying information from spanish investigators who believe there was a getaway vehicle at the scene, that the suspects may have been trying to get to, and, again, that doesn't fully explain what the other reports, including from the man you just spoke to on-air, the bartender there at at restaurant nearby who says they're holed up, not allowed to leave, because they are -- there's a scene there nearby, just a few meters away, where there are believed -- there is believe

evan perez, let me go to you because i know we have some reporting involving some sort of get-away car. what are you hearing? >> reporter: that's right, brooke. at this hour, we're told at least by a u.s. official who has been in touch with the spanish investigators that they believe that there was a get-away van that some of these suspects were trying to get to. that might explain why, again, adding to the confusion there from some of the initial reports, why we heard from some of the eye-witnesses that there were two vehicles. we know one of the vehicles was actually used to carry out the attack. this is the vehicle, the van that was seen driving about 50 miles an hour down a stretch of about a mile on la rambla, which is what caused the injuries and at least one death at the scene there, but it appears, according to a u.s. official that spoke to shimon, one of our reporters here in washington, that the spanish authorities believe that there was a get-away vehicle that they were trying to get to. now, the question is, where are those suspects? we have reports from local media, which

. >> justice correspondent evan perez has been working his sources. he joins us with more, then we'll get to joe johns at the white house. evan, first walk me through the additional subpoenas that you guys broke the news, are being issued and the tie they have to the don jr. meeting. >> what special counsel robert mueller issued the subpoenas to people who could have information about the meeting between the russian lawyer and top officials. the subpoena is seeking documents and more importantly, testimony from the people involved according to a source familiar with the matter. that was organized by donald trump jr., the president's son and jared kushner, the president's son-in-law and paul manafort, the former campaign chairperson. until now, we only knew of a grand jury issuing subpoenas, that was before mueller. he is working out of offices in washington. we got a statement from the president's attorney, jay sekulow, saying the outside counsel has not received a request for documentation about this. anything that goes beyond the mandate specified,

want to bring back our panel, robert ray, phil mudd and evan perez. one of the reasons there's speculation, bob, that the president might fire robert mueller is he hasn't ruled it out. he's been asked directly if he would ever push out robert mueller and he said, wait and see, we have to wait and see. that's why people are wondering about it, because the president hasn't ruled it out yet. as someone who has been in this type of role, do you feel this pressure as you're investigating? >> sure. ultimately you understand in the political process -- of course, prosecutors are not supposed to be making political decisions. you're talking about somebody's liberty. you're certainly aware of the political process and that public sentiment ultimately is the guide about your actions. you have a responsibility in my case under the statute to conduct a prompt, cost effective and fair investigation. that's not so easy to do in the political process, and it's a difficult thing. obviously the president of the united states is not an ordinary subject of an investigat

i want to bring in chief national correspondent and evan perez and paul krook shank who is our editor and chief. paul, let me start with you. isis claims it's soldiers of the islamic state were responsible for the attack. what does that tell you about who they are and their operational capabilities? >> well, they make that claim, jake, without evidence at all or proof to back it up. in the philippines, and it had nothing to do with that whatsoever. it remains to be seen with that point if isis had a hand in this, whether they were in touch in some ways or encrypted with these attackers. whether they were really literally soldiers of isis, people who had been in isis territory and were trained and dispatched like the paris and brussels attackers. none of the things are clear at this point. but, certainly, it's very concerning that this claim has been made that they're saying the multiple attackers involved. what we know about this attack so far was a very low attack type of attack. it didn't involve as far as we understand, firearms or explosives. it was just going out and renting a va

. >> pamela brown broke this story, along with evan perez. they're outfront. and let me start with you. what have you learned about mueller seizing on trump and financial ties to russia. >> well, hey, erin, so the fbi and mueller have reviewed financial records related to the trump organization. the president himself as well as family members and his campaign associates were told investigators have comed through the list of shell companies and buyers of trump real estate properties, including tenants of trump nower and they found some eye brow raising interesting connections to russians. we are told they examined the backgrounds of russian business associates connected to trump dating back to as far as the 2013 miss universe contest in moscow. >> pam, you're also learning more about the focus on people like former campaign chairman paul manafort. and you have some pretty significant developments on that front. >> right. speaking of eye brow raising, our team learned investigators became more suspicious last year when they turned up intercepted communications t

evan perez is our cnn justice correspondent. he's back with us. evan, what are you learning? >> reporter: well, brooke, you know the good news from the local police there in catalunya is that they have been clearing some of those businesses where people were holed up for hours. luckily for the gentleman you just spoke to, he was able to get out pretty quickly, but for others, including some who we've spoken to here on air with cnn, they were sitting there for hours, praying, trying to get information, not really aware of what was happening. there were rumors, there were reports in local media there in barcelona that there might be a hostage situation at a business nearby, a restaurant nearby. the police now say that is not so but they are going door to door, trying to get people out, escorting them out of the scene as they try to pursue this investigation. as you mentioned earlier, there is one arrest. they have not identified that person. they don't say exactly what that person is associated with. we know from local media reports, including from the spanish public broadcaste

evan perez is joining us with more. pame pamela, tell us what else you are learning. >> we are learning about who has been the focus of the investigation. we learned that investigators became suspicious last year when they turned up intercepted communications that u.s. intelligence agencies collected among suspected russian operatives discussing efforts to work with paul manafort who served as campaign chairman for three months. they were discussing in these intercepted communications the information that could damage hillary clinton's election prospects. the u.s. officials say the suspected operatives relayed what they claimed to be conversations with paul manafort encouraging help from the russians. we should point out that they could have been exaggerating or lying and his spokesperson also says there is no collusion with the russians. the focus for investigators is whether manafort was involved in money laundering or tax violations in his business dealings and he has been drawn to a related investigation of son-in-l

let's get right to cnn's correspondent evan perez. >> he is a lawyer with a law firm here in d.c. she was an attorney representing manafo manafort. this is a tactic to add pressure on the former trump campaign chairman. they are seeking documents and testimony, but it's unclear what specific information the mueller investigators learn that lorenza and maloney may have, brianna. >> it is unusual to subpoena an attorney like this. >> right, it does raise some specific issues. it's definitely unusual for you to subpoena a lawyer for someone who is under investigation. it raises potential attorney-client issues and prosecutors usually try to avoid that kind of stuff as they pursue their case. now, maloney is a public relations guy so he doesn't have the same attorney-client privilege connections, but i would hope a big law firm is going to use its own investigators to protect material that they think is protected by privilege. by the way, what's unusual here is the mueller investigators didn't issue a subpoena to wilmer hail. that's the law firm where robert mueller worked a few month

you had some incredible, incredible reporting with pam brown and evan perez, specifically on what these investigators are looking at in terms of finances, right, long before this presidential campaign. tell me about that. >> reporter: yeah, this is sort of now has gone way past to history in terms of way as far back as 2013, maybe even further back than that. and it's really starting around the time that the president visited russia for the miss universe pageant, and the fbi investigators and now bob mueller's team, the special counsel, has really been digging in to some of the meetings that were going on there, looking at some of the connections for perhaps whether they were cultivating relationships with people around trump during their visit, during their time in moscow. they've also been looking at the various real estate possessions and properties with trump names to see who has been occupying some of those spaces. you have trump tower in manhattan where there's a lot of office space and there's obviously a large residential building and they have found some connections to russians

according to new reporting from evan perez at cnn, which nbc has not verified, the bob mueller special counsel inquiry into the trump-russia investigation just issued a subpoena to paul manafort's lawyer. this is not like they wanted to subpoena paul manafort so they gave the subpoena to his lawyer. no they're giving the subpoena to his lawyer. this is one-his lawyers. cnn reports that he got a subpoena requiring her to hand over documents and to give testimony to the special counsel inquiry. and what's weird about that is w , a, she's just one person in the large stable of lawyers in this inquiry. this isn't with wilmer heal. it's not a subpoena to the tax lawyer that manafort hired. this is another lawyer working for manafort from another high priced d.c. firm. and regardless of how many lawyers she's cycpsyccycled thr. it's unusual for one f them to get a subpoena and it's unusual for the government to subpoena somebody's lawyer period. you know how weird this is, when lawyers and their clients talk to each other, those communications with protected by attorney-client privilege. try

but you are putting everyone now on that plane, as our colleague evan perez has reported, in a situation of some legal jeopardy and they're now going to have to be interviewed by the special counsel about this, am i right. >> it's even more than that. we can't just focus on this one statement that don junior did. it really comes down to looking at the jared kushner statement. if you put those two together, you realize the president of the united states is orchestrating this entire defense. the lawyers have nothing to do with it. you could have put them on the plane, it wouldn't have made any difference. he would have thrown them off with parachutes. it really was all donald trump, and this is all part of his plan to obstruct this investigation. if you look at those two statements, they are very surgically drafted. you've got donald junior saying, well, i didn't know what was going on, it just happened to be about adoptions. of course donald trump had no idea that adoptions was just a code word for the sanctions. and with jared kushner, oh, i just walked in after the incriminating stateme

evan perez has more on this breaking news. what does this say about where mueller is going? >> reporter: the subpoenas went to jason maloney and and lor renza. this is something of an aggressive tactic that suggests an effort to add pressure on the former trump campaign chairman. what the subpoena of lorenza raises attorney-client privileges. prosecutors try to avoid these fights as their pursue their case. >> you're learning that donald trump, jr. has agreed on a crucial detail on a meeting with the senate judiciary committee. >> reporter: that's right. our hill team is reporting that donald trump, jr. has now agreed to sit down with a staff in the senate judiciary committee and there's going to be a transcribed interview behind closed doors. hopefully it will answer some of the questions the investigators have about the june 2016 meeting where a russian lawyer was coming with opposition dirt on hillary clinton. we don't know the exact date of this, erin. but we've been told by the senators previously to expect it in september. >> evan, thank you. more breaking news. a new
