joining me now from the pentagon, nbc news hans nichols. so has the pentagon had anything to say about these reports? >> no, they haven't really weighed in on it. secretary mattis is traveling overseas. you know, in some ways they've always ak nomd, though, that the number that we've been using in this case for afghanistan 8,400 isn't entirely accurate. they just won't give us the total number of any given moment of how many troops are inside the country because sometimes they say they frankly don't know. now we have a number. we know roughly where it is. it may go above 12,000, slightly below 12,000. but it gives you an indication of just how complicated some of these accounting rules are and how fluid some of these battle spaces are. this has been going on since the obama administration. some would argue as a result of the hard troop caps the obama administration put on the pentagon because they wanted to avoid mission creep. so you remember with president obama he wanted to drawdown troops down to zero by the end of his term. he ended up

troops in afghanistan than the pentagon originally accounts for. why exactly is there a discrepancy? every person defending this country, especially overseas in a place like afghanistan, their work, their lives matter. what's up with these numbers? >> well, this is something we ask about nearly every day here at the pentagon, stephanie. basically it's exceedingly difficult to count all the troops that go in and out of the country. >> why? why is that so hard? >> well, sometimes people are in for a flight, they're there for support. the number that we had, right, the 8400 number for afghanistan, was the full time. that didn't count people that were staying there on a 90-day deployment, so you have some troops that are there on a 90-day deployment and others there for less. they didn't have to count those. finally we have a number and that number is closer to 12,000. so there are a lot more troops there than have been publicly acknowledged. the 8400 number, it comes, and i don't want to get pentagon speaky here, but something called a force managemen

he also coffers the pentagon for us. hans, what do we know right now? >> well, we know that there's a projectile that's been fired from north korea around pyongyang from the pyongyang province. it's gone towards the sea of japan. so that's to the north and to the east. now, that's confirmed by south korean military officials to nbc news. we also know that there are media reports from japan that the missile has indeed flown over the island of ha kie dough. that would be interesting because that could give you an indication that this is at least an intermediate medium range missile. now, remember, over the weekend on friday night that north korea fired three projectiles. all of those were short range. they're basically skuds. they went about 250 kilometers to the east. what this looks like is a slightly more serious launch. again, nbc news has not confirmed to from the pentagon that these missiles have gone over japan, which would indicate that they are longer range. and we have not actually confirmed through the pentagon that they fired these missiles. n
