[applause] >> thank you all very much. i will be brief. i also want to add my voice of thanks to all the organizers in the last day today and tomorrow. this is a splendid series of events. the word fun does not get often get used in the context of academics. fun is an appropriate word to use. these are delightful presentations. i'm looking forward to the ones that are upcoming. the personal privilege, 100 years ago, a massive funeral. my grandfather and grandmother were there, along with my mother at age two. somehow, these things come around. let me introduce our first panelist. frank christianson, i think most of you know frank and his work. he is an associate professor of

-- rode with buffalo bill. in 19ok first published area --o repair paraphrased by numerous authors. there are many inventions of their homes. own. this becomes intolerable. i would like to focus your attention on something. we entered germany. but this isn't shaped at the top left 15 people. like a tipi. mexican joe apparently visited naples. apparently he was best viewed from the distance in the hills. [laughter] day, but that's ok no right there is going to blow -- that volcano is going to blow. when yellowstone finally goes off it will be like that. [laughter] i finally visited naples. -- about bit from fate pompeii. background is a tipi. photo, clarification -- is that tall thing right there. the volcano corrupted and was ad.stating, in 1789 -- ais time, it blackout blackout was so dangerous, the kid had to be left behind from a family. buffalo bill came to care -- came to paris for the 1889 season. he gave a former employee $90. the following year old a black elk became central in 1890. this raises certain

-- with buffalo bill? one of the reasons why this fame eluded captain jack could be due to their physical appearances. could be due to their physical appearances. buffalo bill, according to some biographers, was a fairly tall man. above average height, possibly six-foot, 6'1". on the other hand, captain jack was only 5'3/4" tall. he walked with a limp as a result of wounds that he received during the civil war. jack did try to mitigate this by including in his first biography a description, who misleadingly described crawford as a tall, wiry man. while captain jack and buffalo bill both appeared on stage together, it was jack joining cody's p optical enterprise, the buffalo bill combination rather than jack creating his own show. jack's stage partnership with buffalo bill at it badly in virginia -- and it badly in virginia city, nevada in 1877 win crawford was playing the part of yellow hand in a combat scene staged and accidentally shot himself in the groin. jack blamed the mishap on cody's drunkenness an

it is indeed buffalo bill. what is this going on? to make us stop calling buffalo, buffalo? and call them bison? bison? is that like -- is that like greek and latin derivatives or something? bison? i know it's scientifically incorrect, like i care. and i would like to tell you it's part of the american language. but of course it was champlain, the frenchman, who came up with the term and identified bison as buffalo. but nevertheless, just because a frenchman did it that doesn't mean it's not ok. and it goes to prove that the french can occasionally get something right. isn't that amazing? the bison nickel. bison wild wings. i mean, seriously. [laughter] and evidently the associated press has joined with the government in trying to change the american language. and i notice now any time buffalo are mentioned in the newspaper they must send out a style sheet. i'm sure they do. and they're called bison. and i just think this is truly the definition of fake news. arthur amiotte with the buffalo bills center of the west. arthur's family history with the center goes back much further than you may think as he is the great-grandson of standing bear, a lakota performer in the buffalo bill wild west show. standing bear would tour until 1890, when he was injured in vienna and he was left behind to recover. his eventual return to pine ridge was with his the emmys nurse who had -- is viennese nurse who had become his wife. by the strange twist of fate, and maybe this was also a bit of a spiritual night from the spirit of standing bear, arthur became a founding member of the plains indian museum advisory were when he was a wee bit back in 1976. what hasn't he done? he has spent a lifetime sharing his philosophy, his vision, his cultural knowledge of lakota life. and i did not feel it was appropriate or necessary to edit such wonderful life achievements. i'm sure i have missed a few things, too. please, make yourself comfortable and prepare for an earful. in addition to being recognized a lakota artist, mr. ami

the buffalo was probably never seen there. the slaughter of the buffalo didn't start until the late 1860's. allegedly refers to people shooting bison from trains. that had not happened yet. the first transcontinental railroad is not completed until 1868. where did this come from? it came from a speech writer, a screenwriter. he taught at middlebury college. he wrote a screenplay for a film about ecology. he essentially made up or invented what seattle said. his speech was further .mbellished and became a letter it became a children's book. fogelman, the president of the press that publish this, when told about the , for wantcity, said of a cheap -- tape recorder, maybe we have a book that will change children's views about the environment. the creator of the illustration of the book said i don't know what he said the native american people live this philosophy and that is what is important. i will give some credit to that point of view. there is not a single native american culture. there are hundreds native american cultures.
