let's go to cecily tynan and accuweather. cecily, irma now a tropical storm but for folks in places like georgia and south carolina, will they be making a mistake if they thought irma was no longer dangerous. >> that's right, jim. that is really based on the wind. the winds have decreased now that it's inland but if you look at the radar you can see this is still a very large storm. the rain shield is about 700 miles apart and across. it's pulling in a tremendous amount of moisture. the rain has left jacksonville but now they have flash flood emergencies in charleston, south carolina with rescues going on right now. that tropical storm will continue to push to the northwest. as it does it loses its source of power. so it will be weakening to a tropical depression a remnant he lo but then we begin to feel the effects of irma as we head through the second half of the week. i'll have details on that. also we have hurricane josÉ swirling in the atlantic. the latest on that storm in the seven-day forecast. jim. >> cecily thank yo

cecily. >> that's exactly right. keep the shorts on hand because you'll want to wear them over the weekend and early next week. right now it's pretty comfortable out there. philadelphia 81 degrees down from our high of 83 which is 7 degrees above normal. allentown and reading, 80 cape may a little bit cooler, 75 and wilmington 78 degrees. we have dewpoints in the 50's so it's not all that muggy but the humidity and the temperatures will really be rising over the weekend. if you look out to the west, chicago, saint louis omaha wichita memphis dallas all in the 90's and that air mass will be gradually moving our way as we head through the weekend. in addition to that, we've got the remnants of josÉ spinning off the eastern seaboard so that means if you are going to the jersey beaches, the delaware beaches, the jersey shore, rip currents will be a problem but the next four days we have this strong ridge of high pressure. so, what this means, summer hangs tough. temperatures running about 10 to 15 degrees above average.

but first to meteorologist cecily tynan and cecily, you've got the update on where this storm is headed and the chances of it coming our way. >> hi, sharrie and the latest on now hurricane josÉ, it has restrengthened back to a category one hurricane. if you look at this infrared satellite you can see how it is beginning to get a little bit more organized and an eye is just beginning to start to form. it's moving northwest at 10 miles per hour currently. the center of the storm 640 miles south-southeast of cape hatteras north carolina, the latest track this actually hasn't shifted much from earlier today. it does show it making a turn to the north as we head through the weekend and then almost parallelling the east coast moving up. the best chance of it making landfall would be near nantucket. this track keeps the center of the storm about 200 miles off the coast. what that means, if that track verifies, the worst of the storm would be staying out to sea. this shows the chance of tropical storm force winds. those are winds more than 39 miles per hour. and it shows the best chance gettin

let's go to live to meteorologist cecily tynan. cecily, what do the facts and figures say from accuweather. >> jim, we've had two days in a row of near record warmth, not feeling like late september at all. yesterday's high 92, 3 degrees shy of the record high of 95 and today our high 91 degrees, just 1 degree shy of the record high of 92. those records both set back in 1970. so, not a record in philadelphia, although allentown tied a record high of 92. that's the only area with the records but trenton 90, wilmington it was hot, 91, reading 90 and a little bit cooler along the shore, atlantic city airport 84 degrees. but if you look at the high temperatures across the eastern half of the country, you can see it's going to be awhile before we cool down. chicago 92, saint louis 91 but there's a cold front and west of that front temperatures in the 60's and 50's so much cooler air will be arriving but it really doesn't get here until the end of the week. next two days still very warm and humid. hurricane maria continues to roll very s

meteorologist cecily tynan is live outside with the forecast. cecily, finally, it's no longer summertime. >> yeah, and to the was the scorcher. in allentown, 91-degrees, pocono, 84. wilmington hit 90. philadelphia, 89-degrees. not a record, two degrees shy of the record. this marks the second straight week in a row of above normal temperatures. satellite and radar showing the cold front slicing across central pennsylvania, that will put an end to the summer like heat. it sweeps through overnight. little moisture. i don't think we'll get shower activity. you see maria spinning off of the coast of carolina, it pushes maria out to sea. philadelphia 72-degree, tropical oh pressive humidity but dewpoints from new york move in overnight. cooler and comfortable the next few days. next week we warm up again. i tell you all about it in the seven-day forecast. jim? >> homicide detectives are looking for the gunman that murdered a man in his 20s tonight. the man was shot in the chest several times just before 6:00. police have not revealed a motivate. >>>

hurricane irma one of the biggest ever and cecily tynan for the latest with accuweather and that's next. ♪ action news delaware valleys leading news program with jim gardner. ♪ there are different ways to look at hurricane irma. this is an infrared satellite image from the national oceanic and atmospheric administration and video taken from the international space station and finally this is irma's eye as seen from a nasa satellite three different views but all say the same thing, this is a potentially catastrophic storm and it's headed towards the united states. it is tuesday night the big story on action news hurricane irma preparing for landfall as a category five storm. people in puerto rico and florida are seriously battening down the hatches with irma producing the most powerful winds ever recorded in the atlantic ocean. the storm could reach florida by the weekend shells are already emptying out in grocery and home stores. authorities are readying evacuation orders and florida governor rick scott has declared a state of emergency for all 67 counties before irma gets to florid

first let's see go to meteorologist cecily tynan. she has the latest word from the national hurricane center tonight. >> hi, rick. we just got the latest update. hurricane jose remains a weak category one hurricane and fortunately it is pretty far off the eastern seaboard. the center of the storm is currently about 250 miles east of the outer banks and you can see that we are beginning to see the outer cloud bands of josÉ moving in but the good news is with this storm as it tracks up to the north, the sustained tropical storm force winds, you can see that in yellow, they will stay offshore. so the national weather service has canceled that tropical storm watch but it's still going to be a very gusty day along the coast. this is what we expect. not sustained winds but wind gusts along the beaches 40 to 45 miles tomorrow as josÉ gets closer inland towards philadelphia about 30 to 40, northwest suburbs wind gusts about 20 to 30 miles per hour but the big problem with josÉ at the fact that it's really whipping up the surf. breaking wa

meteorologist cecily tynan has the latest information from accuweather. cecily, what's headed our way. >> jim, we have some severe thunderstorm warnings as well. double scan live showing this line of thunderstorms pushing to the east. they have a history of damaging winds, hail, vivid lightning and hail and flooding rains. we have severe thunderstorm warning in effect in parts of the lehigh bucks montgomery county chester and berks county until 6:30. any storm can contain hail and damaging winds. this is the line that i'm tracking. this view alone the past 15 minutes we've had 150 lightning strikes. the individual cells are moving northeast pretty quickly, about 30 to 40 miles per hour. we've seen some of this boeing out near pottstown. that's an indication of rushing wind and we can also flip this over and show you that this particular cell does have a history of hail. this is the hail swath as it continues to push to the east and we've had hail reported as large as quarters. this system is continuing to move eastward so we do have a severe thunderstorm

meteorologist cecily tynan live outside now with the details on that. hi, cecily. >> hi, brian. certainly doesn't feel like the first evening of fall. it's pretty warm out here and we still have josÉ spinning off the coast. now, josÉ has undergone a little bit of a transformation. it's now a post tropical storm. what this means is it's lost its warm core but it's still spinning out there about 140 miles southeast of nantucket with maximum sustained winds at 45 miles per hour. and it's really continuing to kick up that that wave action. you can see the wave heights near the coast of atlantic city, ocean city about 5 feet. you get those waves crashing inland. it creates that that rip current risk and that rip current risk will continue through tomorrow and through sunday. so, if you're heading to the shore, it will be a great weekend to be on the beaches but do be careful. good idea not to venture too far in the water. a rip current can really take you by surprise. temperature-wise, it's very comfortable out here right now. 82 degrees in philadelphia. it's warm but low humidity.

meteorologist cecily tynan is keeping a close eye. cecily what's the story so far? >> and jim the biggest concern with josÉ is still what it's doing to the ocean producing large swells, the risk of rip currents on a weekend when a lot of people are going to be heading to the beach. it's going to be warm and sunny. so, this is the latest. maximum sustained winds 75 miles per hour. it's getting more organized moving to the northwest at about 10 miles per hour. it looks like over the weekend on sunday it will start to make that turn up to the north. now, the latest forecast track very similar to the same one we had last night keeps the center of this track about 200 miles off shore. however, we all know about that cone of uncertainty and the western edge does bring a possibility of it clipping the coast of new jersey. so if it keeps on the expected track it means that the chance of tropical storm force winds the best chance will be heading towards cape cod but we have about a 20 percent chance that there could be tropical storm force winds right along the coast if it

>> sara bloomquist is live at philadelphia international airport but we begin with meteorologist, cecily tynan, who is tracking the path of the storm. >> reporter: yes, it looks like irma is more likely going to be hitting southern florida and going up the peninsula. a worst case scenario for florida. this is about the size of texas, already set records in terms of its strength and bearing down on the turks and caicos islands. it looks like that island chain will be decimated by the storm. we have hurricane warnings that extend through the bahamas and hurricane warnings from west palm beach to key west. that means hurricane conditions felt there within the next 48 hours. future tracker 6 shows that is definitely the case. key largo 114 miles per hour. and miami could be in the northeast quadrant of the storm that has the highest wind gust and storm surge, 127 miles per hour wind gusts by sunday morning. so the latest track has shifted a little farther to the west. that means irma will likely be hitting southern florida by saturday afternoon and sunday afternoon as a category four hurrica

final flights from florida but first let's get the latest track of hurricane irma from meteorologist cecily tynan. >> monica, the national hurricane center is sending out dire warnings to the residents in the florida keys to get out now because there will be no safe place on the keys when this storm hits. first of all, it's enormous and it's actually gotten bigger. the eye wall is now 40 miles across. the maximum sustained winds did weaken a little bit over the past 24 hours due to that eye wall replacement cycle but as it moves north of cuba it's moving into warmer waters. that will likely intensify the storm. so, the latest from the national hurricane center does bring it into the florida keys, central florida keys around marathon as a category five hurricane, very early sunday morning, maximum sustained winds 160 miles per hour, gusts more than 200 miles per hour. and continuing to make that turn near naples florida, by sunday morning as a category four hurricane and then pushing it just west of the spine of the florida peninsula by jacksonville a tropical storm and then pushing all that

cecily. >> hi, monica and rick. i'm starting local with this line of storms working toward our region. this view we've had about 800 lightning strikes in the past 15 minutes and there was a tornado warning for york county. as it continues to move in, we had reports of some wind damage in berks county also hail, so we have severe thunderstorm warnings in effect for parts of lehigh, berks, lancaster county, the poconos until 6 o'clock. this means that any storm does contain the potential for damaging winds and even hail. so, zooming in, you can see it's kind of a broken line with some renegade storms ahead of it. one passing east of kutztown right now, 222 another one north of i-78 near allentown, leesport, womelsdorf getting hit very hard. these are moving northeast at about 30 miles per hour but then tire line will be pushing east as we head through the evening hours. so, because of that, a severe thunderstorm watch has been posted until 9 o'clock for philadelphia and essentially all areas north and west. th is wre
