joining me now from santo domingo in the dominican republic is daniel urena. he's from the international federation of red cross and red crescent societies. thank you forjoining us. how bad has the situation been where you are? the situation has been not bad yet, we expect the herbie kane to start and we will of —— feel the effects tomorrow. throughout the dominican republic, turks and caicos and haiti on friday and saturday. you have some time to prepare, what are the contingency plans? right now what we are doing in terms of the islands, haiti and the dominican republic, cuba and the bahamas, supporting the national societies in the red cross, to provide messages to the communities and support the governments with mandatory evacuations from the vulnerable areas. as well as preparing with emergency teams that we have in the countries, the equipment and stock that we have two provide search and rescue and relief efforts as soon as the all clear is given. how bad is it expected to be? we are expecting for the dominican republic and haiti, quite severe damag

it's slamming the northern coast of dominican republic. the u.s. hurricane center says maria could strengthen further in the coming days. meanwhile puerto rico is under a flash flood warning and the energy grid has taken a direct hit and could take months before electricity is back on. 14 people have been confirmed dead on the island of dominica where maria made first landfall. cnn has teams across the caribbean covering the aftermath of hurricane maria and also where the storm is heading. and that would be the dominican republic, and that is where polo sandoval is and in puerto rico, nick valencia also standing by with the effects there and the flooding and all the damage which maria has left. first to polo sandoval. and this storm continues to intensify. right now what are the concerns most people have? >> reporter: for now it's the winds, john. we heard from officials who said the worst of the storm would likely be felt overnight and that is true now. the only reason i'm not being tossed around is because weir seeking shelter here close to the h

clear clearly a lot of concern about the dominican republic where hurricane maria is heading. and once this is over water for a period of time, there's a chance it starts to strengthening again. >> that's right. and we've seen signs that it is starting to become more organized, developed and it's all because of the warm waters that surround the islands near the turks and caicos and the dominican republic. here where i'm located in san juan, the flash flood threat has been a concern since the storm ramped up this morning and into the day time hours today. the national weather service just tweeting that the entire isla island territory is under a flash flood river. there are several rivers feet above flood stage. we have rainfall totals approaching the 30-inch mark. we expect by the time the storm has exited puerto rico, sometime midday on thursday, we will see rainfall totals in excess of 35 inches. remember, harvey -- the terrain here, remember water seeks its own levels and it almost rings out the storm system taking away the available rainfall in hurricane maria and eventual

northern sections of dominican republic dealing with the hurricane warnings. also, as we move toward the turks and caikos, they're under hurricane warnings, that's where this buzz saw is headed next. here is grand turks islands, then see the islands here encompassing the turks and caikos, what we're dealing with the it latest projected path takes it to the north and west, then more toward the north. parallels the eastern seaboards, so that would put it early in next week between bermuda and the outer banks of north carolina, see the margin of area still pretty wide. so looking at dangerous rip currents rough surf continuing. take a look at the european model on maria track, as we move toward next week. so impact for the jersey shore, the delaware beaches would begin middle and latter part of next week, could dot same thing jose did too close for comfort. so the beaches are already dealing with a lot of errosion and rip current, so the trend will continue with maria once again category three hurricane impacting sections of the dominican republic, moving toward

the only wind damage occurring especially in the north coast of the dominican republic. we'll watch and see what happens with the turks and caicos. the storm is supposed to miss to the east. it would keep the worst of it out of the turks and caicocaico. we're safe on the east coast too. no problems whatsoever for the storm. just more huge waves out there like we've been dealing with from jose. the rainfall, we have to remember now that we're almost 24 hours since land fall, it sometimes takes two to three days to even see how bad it was. it wasn't until yesterday that we saw the pictures out of dominica how bad it was. >> ultimately to get to some of the cities and villages in the middle of puerto rico will be difficult with the flooding that we were seeing. >> think about that. nobody on the entire island has power and people saying it could take months to restore power. when you lose electricity, you feel like you can call your local electric and say restore my power. months. >> they said four to six months, and the population is about the same as the state of iowa. th

such a devastating blow to puerto rico and the dominican republic still feeling it, puerto rico still getting some outer rain bands, shawn that could deposit another four to 8-inches of rain, this as the system tries to pull away. it is still a cat three as mentioned. when it went over puerto rico as a category four, it then weakened yesterday to a two but now it's back up to category three. you can tell the eye looks like it's more structured, better organized and now they have to brace for things to go downhill in the turks and caicos and the southeastern bahamas. now it's not a direct hit for those islands but close enough brush by that they're going to have hurricane conditions and tropical storm conditions are beginning right now. maria has winds of 120 miles an hour as it moves northwest at 9 miles an hour. this is the latest track from the national hurricane center and it maintains hurricane status for five more days. now, we do think tomorrow it will start to run into some wind shear that should weaken it into a category two. signs are good it's well east of florida and also w

here's dominican republic here. eye is not too far off shore, close enough they're getting very high surf, very heavy winds especially northern half of the island which is where the hurricane warnings are in effect this morning. certainly nothing to -- 115 miles an hour but certainly seeing that it's still a major hurricane, some effects there. next it will head up towards turks and caicos. should miss them just off to the east as well but get close enough they'll feel significant effects. winds of 115 miles an hour expected to strengthen still a little bit. not expected to become a five again but may get close to a four as it approaches the islands of turks and caicos but should miss just off to the east. into the weekend and early next week we're talking about a curve off to the north. florida looks safe and then up in our direction, not so much heading for us but a lot like josÉ did possibly staying offshore but at the same time close enough that it could affect us with some high surf and some pe beach erosion f

the storm is not done with the dominican republic. the north shore, which we could not get anybody to because the storm was baring down last night, and that's where the damage is being done now. that's where the storm surge is and the winds are right now. from port aplata all the way down to the dominican republic. i can't tell you or show you the radar because the radar is still broken. we just got a notice off the national weather service chat it could be two weeks before they can get to the radar because there are so many trees down on the roadways and the radar is on the mountain, and it's a good place for it until you have to go and fix it. there is the storm right now, 115 miles per hour. it's about 50 miles across. and it was 10 miles across when it hit puerto rico. the arms are out right now, and it's forecasts finally to turn to the right away from the u.s. we have been watching this wiggle for the past couple of days. so far so good today. the answer is no. >> that's good news. thank you, chad. >>> it's hard to exaggerate wh

it was quite a night here on the exterior of the dominican republic of hurricane rita hit and it's very hard to say good news is for the most part it is moving away right now there is still a lot of windows you can probably see for me right now but for the most part hurricane irene is moving away at this hour from the dominican republic like in the middle of the night we saw extensive rain we saw winds of up to one hundred seventy five kilometers per hour here for all intents and purposes this was a city that was completely shut down overnight still it's very quiet here there is some moderate damage with trees down and some minor buildings damage in town but for the most part the dominican republic we're hearing from the tourism ministry and from other officials has come out of this pretty well overall where the cherokee berea go from here it's now headed to. over the atlantic and it will be going to the turks and take those can probably talking over the bahamas well the people of the dominican republic so clearly starting to wake up and figure out how they're going to start cleaning up

. >> right mow the storm is passing the dominican republic. people in puerto rico will wake up today without power and surrounded by widespread devastation after maria hit the island yesterday as a cat 4. there's very little cell phone service and officials say it can be four to six months before the electricity is restored there. people in the dominican republic getting ready. neighbors put up plywood. school is scancelled and 4,000 tourists were moved to other hotels. >>> the danger along the coast is subsiding but the rip current risk remains elevated. we captured monster waves crashing over the sea wall on jfk beach tuesday night. they caused severe beach erosion along about a quarter mile stretch of the coast. part of the protective sand dune was washed away. emergency repairs are underway and the city is now looking at making a more permanent fix that could better with stand future storms. >>> and hurricane season still has several more weeks to go. you can count on the free nbc 10 app to track the storms out there now and whatever pops

the heaviest rain now down along portions of the dominican republic, very mountainous area that does not have a lot of trees. so flash flooding always a concern with tropical systems in and around the dominican: back towards turks and caicos hit by irma so hard, this is expected outer 60-mile range or so stays east of turks and caicos, they'll get into tropical storm force winds, maybe hurricane gusts. a little damage there but nothing like what they saw during irma. they do not need to see that. winds at 120 miles an hour, moving northwest at 9 miles per hour. still def nifty a problem down to the south. here's where things start to get a little better. 110 miles an hour saturday morning. watch what happens here. look at the curve, back out to sea. this is great news for us. this is tuesday, 9:00 a.m. only 85 mile an hour hurricane moving into some cooler water. so, this storm no longer looks like a threat to the u.s. main land. now, we are still going to have to watch it very closely because we still have jose, too. and jose has now been moving back towards the west a little bit, b

we are expecting that in haiti and the ref of hispaniola and the dominican republic. but catastrophic is within 50 to 70 miles of of the eye. turks and caicos is in line for that. south florida, some are calling it potentially catastrophic but that depends on how strong it is. the latest model shows it heading into florida as a strong major category four hurricane. that would be sometime in the wee hours of sunday morning. conditions would deteriorate during the day on saturday. but ground zero if the center track in miami would be wee hours of sunday morning until a couple of hours past dawn. you see how the most likely track is east of florida, east of melbourne that wouldtain to make it a strong storm and then down to a three, and quickly over land it loses the fuel it needs to survive. the warm water and degenerate into a tropical storm, and tropical low after that. and the possible range of tracks is anywhere within the wide cone and once you up past mel born you are uncertain as the track. on the gps model we start saturday morning into saturday evening. look ho
