and facebook found $100,000 worth of those ads linked to 500 fake facebook pages where fictional people posed as american activists, many of whom attacked hillary clinton and praised donald trump. facebook has since removed 470 profiles and pages, linked to a russian company with ties to the kremlin. scott shane of the "new york times" investigated several of the pages. and here's an example of what he found. this is the facebook page of someone who identified as melvin reddick of harrisburg, pennsylvania. on june 8, 2016 reddick started sharing links on facebook to a new anti-hillary website. he posted quote these guys show hidden truth about hillary clinton, george soros and other leaders of the u.s. visit dc leaks website. it's really interesting. well here's the problem found by scott shane at the "times." melvin reddick does not appear to exist, his photos appear to have been taken bay brazilian stranger. one photo shows him at a restaurant in brazil. another photo of his daughter's bedroom shows a brazilian style electrical output and the "times" also notes that reddick's posts ne

facebook is -- that can't be there. facebook would give a bunch of holders, rights to hundreds of millions of dollars to buy them off while they built this system, in collaboration with these music partners to have a system for all the user generated videos. >> this comes as facebook is rolling out a new hub for video, watch. james: i think it is super smart. they can likely get the deal done. what they are doing is putting their money where their mouth is. moneye willing to spend in order to keep people engaged. to make sure there are no issues when it comes to the music. i think that is something millennial's like to do. they are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on top of that for video content. what they are showing is a willingness to really be a contender when it comes to the digital content. who does this put pressure on? youtube? >> they were trying to get it changed with. they're hoping it does put some pressure on facebook to figure it out. they're hoping the tiger they get bound together, -- the tiger

facebook is when the justice department looks at there's any liability for facebook, which is something people have been asking me a lot about on twitter and i'll be writing about soon, one of the factors that they're going it look at is how cooperative facebook was, how cooperative they were with the government, how much they came forward. and so not only is there a pr component to it, which i agree is part of it. i also think that part of it is a legal component where being as cooperative as possible with authorities is the best way to ensure as little liability as possible for them. >> jameel, i'll give you the last word. >> well, look, don, i think renato's right. i think it's important the government and facebook work together on this effort. i think facebook's made some good progress in the last few days. what they're going to do with congress to disclose the ads going forward. and so i think there's a real opportunity for the government and industry to work
