u.n. still a relevant organization this is inside story. hello and welcome to the program with me today peter not once again the international community is getting together to discuss combating global conflicts and humanitarian crises in places like me and mom but as the seventy second united nations general assembly gets underway in new york this week some question the goals of the one hundred ninety three member states and if the u.n. is still a force for global good well that's our guest in a moment but first let's hear from our washington editor james bays at u.n. headquarters in a development of every year when world leaders gather in new york in september they listen carefully to the words of the most powerful person on earth but for the first time since the u.n. was created at the end of the second world war the u.s. president who addressed them from this podium is someone who at times has appeared to question the multilateral order the united nations represents. diplomats are wary

the u.n. that we have seen since i have been here. the declaration of support for united nations reform began as a way to give momentum to the terrace efforts to bring efficiency and transparency to the u.n.. we thought that having members put their names on a document when help insure that these goals do not just remain words, but become part of the culture of the u.n.. hasresponse we have had been nothing short of fantastic. thenations have signed onto declaration as of this morning, and we are still counting. that is a super majority. i think our cohost today, our friends from canada, germany, niger,ia, japan, jordan, slovakia,negal, thailand, the u.k., and uruguay. most of all, i think all of you. the fact that somebody are committed to seeing the u.n. succeed is gratifying. it is a sign not only that change is desperately needed, but that it will be achieved. you are the reason changes coming to the u.n. to introducehonor someone who is no stranger to change. has a businessman dive for se

i think, first of all, we can all say it is a new day at the u.n. the u.n. has shifted over the past several months. it's not just about talking, it's about action. the members are starting to get used to act, whether it's security council resolutions, whether it's with u.n. reform, whether it's with peacekeeping, we're starting to see a lot of changes at the u.n. they are all anxious to see what the u.s. delegation looks like next week, and i think they will be heavily impressed with the fact that we have the president, the vice president, the secretary of state, and many members of the national security council coming to really show the u.s. strength that we have in the world. and i think -- obviously this will be the first time that the president has addressed the general assembly. they are all very anxious to hear what he has to say. and i think that he will make quite an impact in terms of all of the issues that we're dealing with. we have three events that will be extremely important. first, the president will highlight the u.n. reform event. it is ver
